WINTER TERM 2019 Studio Painting and Drawing with Tom Root ( 10 week session) Level - Beginners to Advanced Classes are designed for adults, but serious teen students are welcome. Schedule is subject to change due to instructor schedules. Students will draw and paint from still-life set ups, starting with initial lessons in learning to "see" and represent forms in space and progressing to making artful paintings. The instructor will demonstrate and discuss the techniques, materials and history of oil painting. This is an ongoing class where new students mix with more experienced painters. Students may also choose to work on their own projects and receive individual critiques. In the warmer months, students have the option of painting landscapes on location near the school. Thursday Morning Class begins January 24, 2019. 9:00-12:00 (3 hour) Thursday Mornings - $300 (drop-ins $35 per class--call to see if there is space available.) Thursday Afternoon Class begins January 24. 1:00-4:00 (3 hour) Thursday Afternoons - $300 (dropins $35 per class--call to see if there is space available.) Studio Painting and Drawing Full Day Option (10 weeks) Students who wish to take both Studio Painting classes back-to-back for a full day of painting may do so for a reduced rate. Thursday Full Day Class begins January 24, 2019. 9:00-4:00 $500 (drop-ins $50 per day-long class call or email ahead to see if there is space available.) Suggested Materials: Drawing students: vine charcoal; sandpaper block; kneaded rubber eraser; chamois; backing board; charcoal paper. Painting students: Canvases: medium sized canvas panels or stretched primed canvas (16"x20," 18"x24" or so). Palette: wood, hardboard or thick glass; palette cup; palette knife; cotton rags or paper towels. Brushes: various sizes of natural bristle oil brushes (filberts, flats) such as Robert Simmons Signet brand. Medium: odorless mineral spirits; oil painting medium such as linseed, stand or walnut oil. Some suggested oil colors: titanium white; yellow ochre; cadmium lemon, raw umber; cadmium red light; quinacridone rose; burnt sienna; ultramarine blue; Prussian green or viridian. Friday Portrait Painting & Drawing (10 week session) with Tom Root Level - Intermediate to advanced. Professionals welcome! Friday mornings 9:00-12:00 Begins January 25, 2019 Ten Weeks $300. Model fee - $70. Space is limited -- register soon! Students will paint and draw the portrait from the live model. The instructor will demonstrate and discuss aspects of the portrait, including achieving a likeness, posing, lighting, design, and various historic painting methods -- all in the context of understanding the portrait's history and future potential as fine art. Basic drawing and painting skills will also be taught. Suggested Materials: Canvases: medium sized canvas panels or stretched primed canvas (16"x20," 18"x24" or so). Palette: wood, Masonite or thick glass; palette cup; palette knife; cotton rags or paper towels. Brushes: various sizes of natural bristle oil brushes (filberts, flats). Medium: odorless mineral spirits; oil painting medium (commercially prepared or stand oil or refined linseed oil or walnut oil, etc.). Each class will begin with a mini-lecture focusing on some aspect of human anatomy, followed by a quick-drawing session, and end with a long multi-evening pose. Join Allison Parker for this weekly three-hour class in drawing fundamentals. This class offers a step-by step guide to academic drawing practices, giving the student a toolbox of skills to solve basic problems of proportion, structure, and dimension. Students will complete drawing exercises from simple plaster casts and master copies, offering the opportunity to slow down and focus on technique. Topics to be discussed will include measuring, the envelope method, shape-seeing, shading and proportion. Perfect for beginners or more experienced artists who want to refine their accuracy skills. Allison Parker will instruct Beginning Painting, recommended for those with previous drawing experience. (The Foundations Drawing course is recommended but not required.) This course will help students make the transition from black-and-white drawing to painting in color. We will explore several strategies to make this transition easier, helping the student develop his or her own 'best' process leading to a finished piece. We will use several types of preparatory studies and discuss how to finish or develop paintings in situations where live observation time is limited. We will focus on developing solid drawing and/or painting skills by studying master works of art in addition to working from live observation. Choose a drawing/painting media of your choice or explore various techniques. Topics may include portrait, still life, landscape, figure drawing, and perspective. New! Saturday Teen Class - Drawing and Design 1 3 p.m. Students ages 12-17 will explore the foundations of art including proportion, perspective, composition, shading and narrative. A solid understanding of academic drawing techniques will lead into a more imaginative personal work at the end of the course. We will use various drawing media including pencil, ink wash, charcoal and watercolor. Landscape Workshops Spring 2019 Intensive Landscape Workshops "en plein air" are designed to provide plenty of time for painting, instruction, and camaraderie with fellow artists. We usually have a variety of levels and experience - from beginner to professionals which enhances the experience for all participants. Our beautiful locations in NE Tennessee will be easily accessed by Interstate 26 and in close proximity to Johnson City and the Tri-Cities. Directions and details will be sent out to all participants. Car-pooling and rides for those attending without cars can be arranged. Price of the workshop is $400. (Deposit of $200 to reserve your place with the remainder due when the workshop begins.)
