Paulette Lane Paulette is a passionate knitter who has been designing since 1984 and teaching since 1999. She achieved her master knitter designation through the Knitting Guild of Canada in 1999. 1
A long-time member of the West Coast Knitters Guild, her favourite part of the Guild meetings is helping members with their knitting challenges. She is a process knitter and takes great pleasure generating a pattern from an idea or an inspiration and seeing it through to the end, always learning something new along the way. She loves the architecture of knitting and believes that the details make the garment. Swatching is a favourite pastime and she enjoys trying new techniques. Along with private tutoring and instruction to individuals and small groups, she has delivered knitting workshops to: The West Coast Knitters Guild since 1997 Victoria Knitters Guild Kelowna Knitters Guild Okanagan Knitting Retreat, Sorrento, BC as guest instructor since 2008 Paulette s focus is on sharing information with knitters, to encourage new knitters, young and old, male and female, to find their own reward in needles and yarn. Her patterns are sold on Ravelry under the name, PLANE Images. Workshop Details: If you have a good grasp of fundamental knitting skills and would like to learn some different techniques for putting your own stamp on an existing pattern then this workshop is for you. It is the small details that make a garment unique and we will discuss the many ways a knitter can personalize a garment. Plus, you will knit various cast-ons and cast-offs, and use seams to demonstrate the way these small details can crank a knitted garment up a notch or two. Skills Needed: Knitter should be confident with basic cast on and cast off, knit, purl, increase, decrease so the basic skills. Knowledge of crochet is nice to have but not mandatory. Homework and Materials: Homework Swatch Group One Knit four of the following in non-textured yarn with at least one in a contrast colour. Cast on 17 stitches. Row 1: K2 *P1, K3* repeat between *s until 3 stitches remain, P1 K2. Row 2: P2 * K1, P3* repeat between *s until 3 stitches remain, K1, P2. Repeat Row 1 and 2 once. Work 26 rows of stockinette stitch. Work Rows 1 and 2 twice. 2
Do not cast off. Place stitches on a holder or length of smooth cotton yarn. Leave a tail of yarn about 5 times the width of the swatch. Block the swatches so they lay flat. Bring the leftover yarn to class. Swatch Group Two A. Knit one swatch as follows. Cast on 35 stitches. Work 26 rows in Stockinette Stitch. Cast off. Block the swatch so that it lays flat. Bring the leftover yarn to class. B. Following the basic instructions below, work at least one swatch with each of the three selvedges. Block the swatches so they lay flat. Label each swatch. Bring the leftover yarn to class. Basic Instructions: Cast on 35 stitches. Work 26 rows in Stockinette Stitch with the first two stitches of each row worked in Garter Stitch. Cast off. Selvedge one Yarn over at the beginning of the row 1. Hold your yarn at the front of the needle as if to purl, then knit a stitch. In order to knit the stitch with the yarn in front, the yarn must go over the needle to the back thus creating a yarn over at the beginning of the row. 2. On every row after the Yarnover, knit 2 together (K2Tog), K1, then continue with Seed Stitch or Stockinette Stitch, as required, to the last two stitches, K2. Selvedge two Knit into the top of the stitch in the row below 3
Also called the lifted or raised increase; it is usually seen worked within the row as shown in the image to the right. For this technique, it is worked on the first stitch in the row. 1. From the outside edge, insert the right needle into the top of the first stitch in the row below 2. Knit the first stitch. 3. On every row after the increase, K2tog, K1, then continue with Seed Stitch or Stockinette Stitch, as required, to the last two stitches, K2. Selvedge three Yarn over after the first stitch K1, YO, K2tog, then continue with Seed Stitch or Stockinette Stitch, as required, to the last two stitches, K2.
