MEET OUR JUDGES Felix Zwart NVP, the Dutch Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Research & Regulatory Affairs Felix Zwart is the head of research and regulatory affairs at NVP, the Dutch Private Equity and Venture Capital Association. He is, together with partners at other European PE & VC associations, responsible for the collection and publication of investment, divestment and fundraising data for the Dutch market. Next to that he is in charge of all tax and regulatory lobbying efforts. He previously held positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Holland Venture, a Dutch mid-market private equity firm. He holds a BSc degree in sociology, and a MSc degree in public economics, both from Utrecht University Sailfish Management CEO Ronald Latenstein Ronald Latenstein (1964) started his new position as CEO of Sailfish, an investment management and advisory boutique, as of the 1st of March this year. His career began in an unconventional way. Not wanting to walk the beaten path, he first worked as a chef in a restaurant after finishing cooking school. After some time, he started his career in finance. Ronald is an accomplished general and financial manager with considerable experience in the area of setting and steering the strategic course of companies. He brings with him more than 25 years of experience, chiefly within the financial sector. Most recently he was COO of an investment firm called Dasym and before that he was the Director of International Development and Group Cohead of Investment Banking at Oddo &Cie in Paris. Prior to these 2 appointments he had been CEO of SNS Reaal, a Dutch financial institution in insurance and banking with EUR 130 billion in assets where he was also responsible for the private equity unit. He has been involved in many M&A transactions as well as restructuring projects. Ronald holds a master degree in Business Administration from Bradford University, a bachelor degree in Economics from The Hague Business School. Martin Kerkhof PwC Director Commercial Due Diligence & Data Analytics Martin Kerkhof has 10 years of experience in advising clients in M&A situations. He is a seasoned strategy consultant with particular experience in the Telecom, IT and technology industries. Next to this Martin leads a team of Data Scientists that apply advanced data analysis in M&A situations. Before working at PwC he worked at Ericsson and Philips Consumer Electronics. He has an MBA of the Rotterdam School of Management and a Master of Science of Computer Science of the Technical University Eindhoven.
MEET OUR JUDGES Keith Black CAIA Association Managing Director Keith Black has over twenty-five years of financial market experience, serving approximately half of that time as an academic and half as a trader and consultant to institutional investors. He currently serves as Managing Director of Curriculum and Exams for the CAIA Association. During his most recent role at Ennis Knupp + Associates, Keith advised foundations, endowments and pension funds on their asset allocation and manager selection strategies in hedge funds, commodities, and managed futures. Prior experience includes commodities derivatives trading, stock options research and CBOE floor trading, and building quantitative stock selection models for mutual funds and hedge funds. Dr. Black previously served as an assistant professor and senior lecturer at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He contributes regularly to The CFA Digest, and has published in The Journal of Wealth Management, The Journal of Trading, The Journal of Investing, and The Journal of Alternatives Investments, among others. He is the author of the book Managing a Hedge Fund, as well as co-author of the 2012 and 2015/2016 second and third editions of the CAIA Level I and Level II textbooks. Dr. Black was named to the Institutional Investor magazine s list of Rising Stars of Hedge Funds in 2010. Dr. Black earned a BA from Whittier College, an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, and a PhD from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and was a member of the inaugural class of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) candidates. America Today Finance Manager Jonathan Kahn Jonathan Kahn is an experienced finance professional with 4+ years of relevant M&A experience. After working in M&A, Jonathan got his MBA with a Beta Gamma Sigma distinction and joined the family business; Cool Investments. He is currently the CFO at America Today and an active partner within the family investment office. Cool Investments actively invests in real estate, PE funds and small/medium sized companies in the Netherlands, and acts as the holding company for America Today, CoolCat, MS Mode and Sapph Lingerie. Emke Bus Emke Bus was, as a Managing Director Infrastructure at GRESB, responsible for the launch of the GRESB Infrastructure framework. She previously worked as a portfolio manager for infrastructure and private equity investments for Achmea Asset Management and as a relationship manager for Dexia Asset Management. Emke holds a Master of Science in Business Administration from Erasmus University in the Netherlands. She is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.
MEET OUR JUDGES Thomas Maurel Valery Capital Managing Partner Thomas Maurel founded Valery Capital in 2009. Prior to Valery Capital, Thomas was an M&A specialist based in Hong Kong, and then in London, serving clients such as Philips advising on technology and business service transactions up to $250m. Before that, he was Managing Director in the Netherlands of the global high tech & innovation consultancy Altran Technologies. He was elected in 2000 as best manager of the global group among 300 peers. Thomas is an engineer and holds an MBA from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, is a French citizen, and is based in Amsterdam. Fair Value Consultants & Rotterdam School of Management Partner at Fair Value and Lecturer at RSM Hans Haanappel Hans Haanappel is a corporate finance professional with 20 years of experience in business valuation, LBOs, M&A and value management. Hans was involved in many valuations related to M&A, LBOs, damage calculations, financial reporting and legal proceedings. His experience covers a wide variety of business sectors but with extensive experience in retail and media. Next to advisory, Hans lectures at several universities (a.o. Erasmus University/RSM, Nyenrode Business University) in master and executive education programs. Furthermore, Hans provides training for corporate finance professionals of investment banks, M&A boutiques, asset managers and PE houses both nationally and internationally. Clients appreciate him for his analytical and technical skills, fast execution, practical approach, client commitment and integrity. Matthieu Tak Rabobank Domestic Head Financial Restructuring & Recovery Matthieu Tak is a finance professional with over 15 years of experience across multiple financial and consultancy companies. He currently serves at Rabobank as head of the Dutch Workout Team, managing all the distressed assets held by the decentralised local Rabobanks. Matthieu is also a frequent guest lecturer at Rotterdam School of Management for Turnaround & Change Management.
Bas Kea Avedon Capital Partners Investment Manager Bas Kea is Investment Manager at Avedon Capital Partners, a private equity fund focused on mid-market growth and buy-out investments in the Benelux and Germany. At Avedon he is responsible for Olympia (top-10 staffing agency in the Netherlands) and BBF holding (group of companies active in the production, maintenance and technology of smart waste systems) and is responsible for the sourcing of new investment opportunities in the industrial sector. Prior to Avedon he was part of the Benelux M&A team of Lazard, where he worked on several sell-side, buy-side and restructuring engagements both in the public as well as the private space. Bas holds a MSc in Financial Law (LL.M) and a MSc in Accounting & Control from RSM Erasmus University. Rotterdam School of Management Finance Manager Solomon Zori Solomon Zori is an Assistant Professor of Accounting & Valuation at the Rotterdam School of Management Department of Accounting & Control, Erasmus University. Before joining RSM, Solomon was a Finance Specialist at SAP in the Corporate Financial Reporting Department. He also was an Investment Banking associate at UBS and Goldman Sachs respectively. Solomon holds a PhD in Financial Accounting from the University of Cologne and the International Max Planck Research School in Germany, an MSc. in Accounting and Control from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and a BCom degree from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. He is also a Chartered Certified Accountant with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Solomon currently teaches courses in Business Analysis and advanced valuation to Msc and MBA students. His research further focuses on the interplay between financial reporting standards, accounting regulation and capital market valuation effects.
