Frame: Project Scope and Objectives Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) is a family of DNA sequences in bacteria and archaea. The sequences contain snippets of DNA from viruses that have attacked the prokaryote. These snippets are used by the prokaryote to detect and destroy DNA from similar viruses during subsequent attacks. These sequences play a key role in a prokaryotic defense system, and form the basis of a technology known as CRISPR/Cas9 that effectively and specifically changes genes within organisms. Assemble and Analyze granted patents and published patent applications related to CRISPR technology. This study includes various aspects of the technology including mediators, delivery vehicles, vectors and application areas. The collection includes global patent information going back to a priority year of 2005. Due to the 18 month publication time for a patent, 2016 and 2017 will not be considered for this study. The report will look to answer specific questions around technical and commercial trends occurring within the CRISPR domain.
Key Questions The study looks to answer the following key questions: What is the overall filing activity for CRISPR Technology? Where are the major sources of innovation? Who are the major players?
