INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUMMER COURSES IN VADSTENA The Swedish Lace Association offers summer courses in Vadstena bobbin lace making and other Swedish lace making techniques. The courses are held at the Vadstena Folkhögskola, in the unique, inspiring historical town of Vadstena, along the coast of lake Vättern. Application: At the latest April 5, 2012. Notification of acceptance will be sent preferably by e-mail, in May. Any vacancies will be filled after that date. Course fees: Course fees are to be paid in full upon notification of acceptance. Please pay to: Spetskonsulentverksamheten, bankgiro 5750-1678, at the latest June 3, 2012. Refunds only if the course is cancelled or in the case of illness, in which a doctor s certificate is required. An administrative fee of 500:- SEK will be charged. Accommodations: Accommodations can be arranged from Sunday, June 24 at the Vadstena Folkhögskola, situated just by the lake, in beautiful, historical surroundings. The school offers good hostel standards, including kitchens. The rooms all have showers and toilets. Single rooms cost 330:- SEK per night, double rooms cost 280:- SEK per person per night. Please bring your own linen and towels. It is possible to rent linen and towels for 80:- SEK. Please fill in this on the application if desired. The cost for accommodations is to be paid in full by June 5, 2012 to: Spetskonsulentverksamheten,bankgiro 5750-1678. New for this year! It is possible to eat lunch at the school cafeteria. ADVANCED COURSE I Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Contents of the course: Practical bobbin lace making combined with history, mounting, drawing patterns, and analysis. Objectives of the course: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making, and to preserve the cultural inheritance and development of bobbin lace making, as well as to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude of bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur förlag) and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag) Qualifications: The completion of a 30 hour bobbin lace course or comparative basic skills in bobbin lace making. It is preferred that you have completed the basic patterns according to the book Knyppling. Please submit an example of your work with your application for the course. Cost for materials: This depends on what materials you already have and how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 500:- SEK. Course fee: 3400:-SEK 2. ADVANCED COURSE II Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Contents of the course: Making bobbin lace with thinner threads, beginning with the Sampler II from the book Knyppling, analyzing, drawing, and pricking of patterns. Lessons in the basic techniques of bobbin lace and lace making from other countries are included. Objectives of the course: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making, and to preserve the cultural inheritance and development of bobbin lace making, as well as to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude of bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur förlag), and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). 3. ADVANCED COURSE III Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction, including Saturday morning. Contents of the course: You improve your skills of choosing the right materials for different techniques and patterns. You do advanced patterns in thicker threads, for example laces for altar cloths, plus an analysis of a lace sample. Lessons in the development of European lace making are included. Objectives of the course: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making, and to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude of bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur Förlag), and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). Qualifications: The completion of the Advanced Courses I and II Cost for materials: This depends on what materials you already have and how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 500:- SEK Course fee: 3400:- SEK 4. PROVINCIAL LACE MAKING Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Note: You can choose between the full two weeks course and a one week course, (see the application form for details). Contents of the course: The course gives the basic skills in provincial lace making, to preserve and to further develop the local variations of lace traditions. Lace from Darecarlia and Scania and the near by regions will be in focus. You will make acquaintance with the different techniques, pillows and materials from these areas. Objectives of the course: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making, and to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude of bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish book Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag) and I Knipplingahjörnan (Österlens Museum). STUDIES IN COMPOSITION Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Contents of the course: The course gives you the basic skills in design for lace making, including in depth knowledge of designing bobbin lace patterns and adaptation of different materials. Objectives of the course: Provide knowledge of image and form of expression in lace making, and to develop skills in the evaluation of sketches. 7. BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED COURSE Date: June 25 June 29, 38 hours of instruction Contents of the course: The course is intended for beginners and even those who are a little more advanced. You work at your own level. Beginners are taught the basic skills in Vadstena bobbin lace making. A competent instructor will give you the necessary guidance so you can develop your own skills, which will enable you to continue lace making on your own after the course. Literature: The Swedish book, Knyppling (Natur och Kultur förlag) Qualifications: No previous skills necessary. This course is open for everyone! how much you accomplish during the course, approx 300:- SEK. Course fee: 2200:- SEK 8. BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED COURSE Date: July 2 July 6, 38 hours of instruction Please see the above description of course 7. 9. CHILDREN S COURSE IN LACE MAKING Date: June 25 June 29, from 9 am 1 pm, 25 hours of instruction Contents of the course: This course gives you the basic skills in Vadstena bobbin lace making. Those who already can do lace, continue to develop their skills. Costs for materials: The costs of borrowing a lace pillow, bobbins and necessary materials are included in the course fee. Qualifications: This course is for those who want to begin lace making and for those who already can do lace. Age: from 7 years. Number of participants: A maximum of 6 Course fee: A reduced fee of 1000:- SEK 10. CHILDREN S COURSE IN LACE MAKING Date: July 2 July 6, from 9 am 1 pm, 25 hours of instruction Please see the above description of course 9. 7

COURSE IN MOUNTING BOBBIN LACE Date: June 29 July 1, and/or Sept 7 Sept 9, 22 hours of instruction each time Friday 17.00-19.00, Saturday 09.00-17.00, Sunday 09.00-15.00 Note: You can take this class one or two weekends. The second weekend is an advanced class where participants of the first weekend will have preference. Contents of the course: This course is for those who want to learn to mount lace, according to the Swedish Lace Association. Bring your own finished lace or buy lace at the course. Qualifications: Previous skills in sewing are necessary. how much you accomplish during the course, approx 300:- SEK. PICTORIAL BOBBIN LACE Inspired by Vadstena Date: July 2 July 6, 38 hours of instruction Contents of the course: You learn to make pictures in bobbin lace with ideas and inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of Vadstena. If you have done lace pictures before, you have the possibilities to develop your own ideas in picture lace making, but for the beginner the literature below may serve as inspiration. Qualifications: Basic skills in lace making. how much you accomplish during the course, approx 300:- SEK. FREE LACE MAKING Jewels & Birds Date: June 25 June 29, 38 hours of instruction Contents of the course: This course challenges your artistic creativity to create your own personal jewels and birds, in two or three dimensions, under the guidance of a very inspiring instructor. The instructor s way of using different techniques, coloured yarns and materials, for example metal, and combination with embroidery is very inspiring. Qualifications: Basic skills in lace making. how much you accomplish during the course, approx 300:- SEK. Course fee: 2200:- SEK Instructor: Ingrid Eggiman-Jonsson 14. BELGIAN LACE - FLOWERS OF BRUGES Date: June 25 June 29, 38 hours of instruction Contents of the course: Belgian lace (Grof Bruges Bloemwerk) from Bruges with its characteristic flowers, leaves and winding tape lace. This lace is made in different pieces with very few pairs of bobbins and connected with the help of a crochet hook. You learn the basic techniques and do the most common patterns and fillings, i.e. plaits between the different motives. Qualifications: The completion of a 30 hour bobbin lace course or comparative basic skills in bobbin lace making, and that you have completed the basic patterns according to the book Knyppling. how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 300:-SEK, plus the cost of the course compendium, approx. 120:- SEK. SCANIAN PETTERSSON LACE Date: June 29 - July 1, 22 hours of instruction Friday 17.00-19.00, Saturday 09.00-17.00, Sunday 09.00-15.00 Contents of the course: The Pettersson laces were made during the years 1800-1839 by the family Pettersson from Österlen, Scania. The characteristics of these laces are the geometrical shapes they share with Scanian free hand lace. You will learn the basics by using a pricked, but not sketched, pattern and a drawn description. With the given shapes it is possible for you to make your own combinations and designs. Rediscover these old laces, their technique and its advantages. The same technique was, and still is, used in Hälsingland. Qualifications: The completion of a 30 hour bobbin lace course or comparative basic skills in bobbin lace making, and that you have completed the basic patterns according to the book Knyppling. how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 300:-SEK. OVANÅKER LACE Past meets present Date: July 5 - July 8, 30 hours of instruction Starting Thursday 12.00, ending Sunday 12.00 Contents of the course: The lace from Ovanåker has for a long time been made using the round pillows (from Dalecarlia) and no pattern. This makes the technique more free and the patterns have been adjusted after the properties of the yarn. Using this old technique we experiment with applications more suitable for today s way of living. 17. LACE IN GOTHENBURG Date: August 13 - August 17, 30 hours of instruction, note the date! Contents of the course: The theme of the course is architecture, buildings, houses, facades, structures, outlines, etc- Let the architecture and skyline of Gothenburg inspire you in making pictorial lace, jewels, decorations and traditional lace. Qualification: Up-to-date and good knowledge in lacemaking how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 300:-SEK.
