GOAL Episode 11 The Tests Don t Lie. Broadcasting date : 17 February, 2003 RECAP OF PREVIOUS EPISODE COMMENTARY Emma comforts Manni in hospital and is there when he wakes up, but his leg hurts. COMMENTARY (CONT D): COMMENTARY (CONT D): Jim feels guilty, and Sophie tries to work out the cause of the pain. Emma has some good news. It s an order from Xavier for my shirts. COMMENTARY The injury isn t serious, and Manni starts to train again, but loses his nerve. COMMENTARY (CONT D): Emma tries to reassure him, and Joe talks him back on to the pitch. You have to give it another try. Well? COMMENTARY Once again Paul s place in the team is threatened what will he do? (TO ) Come on Paul! Make an effort! I know you're more used to sitting on the substitutes' bench than actually playing but try and do something! Why don't you just shut your mouth! 1

Don't listen to him, Joe. That's how he plays his game. Yeah, he's got a big mouth though. Come on. Charlie, I've been thinking about this for a while. Maybe this is all too much. Look - It's easy to be scared when you finally get what you've always wanted. No, that's not what I mean... (CONT D) I mean, I think I should give you my notice. It's time I gave up my job at the hotel. Just because you've had one big order? Have you thought about this? I've got to go for this. This is a chance in a lifetime. Listen, if you want to leave the hotel, that's fine. I didn't expect you to work here for ever. To be honest with you, I think what you're doing is fantastic. (CONT'D) Why don't you just start working part-time, that way you'll always have some regular money coming in case you need it. Thanks Charlie. You know, you're one pretty special guy. Hmm sweet talk won't work with me, you know! What's the matter with you? What do you think! I'm playing in the reserves! Alright? Not really. I don't like playing with children. 2

If that's your attitude, then you're never going to make it back into the first team. What ever you say Boss! Exactly. You should try and remember that. OK guys! It's monthly drug tests tomorrow. (CONT'D) Pick up your sample bottles before you leave today. And make sure you remember to bring them in tomorrow! (TO ) So what is the drugs test system like over here? Well, it's painless. You just need to bring a urine sample in the morning. They just like to keep a regular check on the first team. I don't know why they're bothering with you. They only need to test people that are actually going to play. So why're they testing you then?! Leave it Joe! We need something extra for Sunday. The lads are ready. I think we've seen from training that the attackers are totally fit now. They're scoring goals for fun at the moment. And that's the problem. It's not the attack that's the worry, it's our defence that needs looking at. What do you mean? Paul and Manni find it easy to score against our defence and London United will find it just as easy. Jim's doing well at the back, but he needs more help in defence... Thanks darling, they're lovely. 3

(TO ) Sorry I haven't come to see you for a while... We're all very busy. I thought I should look in and see you, though. Seemed a bit stressed today. You're not wrong about that. He never relaxes! Well, he can relax on Monday. Once we've won the championship. I thought this was a social visit. It is! He's just saying he's worried about you! He is your son, you know! We can win you know dad. Look, I know you mean well but I don't want to talk about work. Alright? I've had enough of that for one day. (CONT'D) I would offer you one son, but you're in training. Right? Training for what? You played me in the reserves today! Paul. I might as well have a drink. I mean, you're not going to start me on Sunday, are you, so why shouldn't I? I don't understand you. You're in the squad and you're an active member of the team. But you're not going to start me on Sunday, are you? I thought you being nice and friendly and sociable was too much hope for. Let's go Em. 4

I'd love to but I can't go anywhere until this lot's finished. So you're going to stay here for ever then?! Oh, thanks for the support!! That's just what I wanted to hear! Are you sure you don't want to come out? No, really. I mean, I'd love to, but I just can't. Come on guys, she means it. Then I'm going to stay too. What's wrong with you people?! I'm pretty good at ironing. I'd hold on to him if I were you, Emma. You've got him well trained. Yeah! (CONT'D) Bye! (TO ) See ya! It's nice of you to stay. Actually, I'm just being selfish. Really? Yes, well, this way I can spend more time alone with you. Look, it's very unfair of you to come round here and try and talk about all of this now. I am trying to relax. He's just worried about his place in the team. Remember what you were like when you were his age? You were no different. Football was everything to you. 5

Wrong! I didn't have it easy. Like him. I've done everything you asked me to. I'm not saying you haven't, but you can't just come round here and expect to use your mother and me to get what you want. I will pick the team my way and I'll announce it when I'm ready to, OK! Alex, just leave it. This isn't about picking the right team, this is about your ego. What?! I'm more popular as a player than you ever were when you played for Rangers. What're you saying? I'm saying you re jealous! The crowd loves me and you can't take it! That's enough! Aahh! Stand still! That's easy for you to say, but I'm the one with pins sticking in me. Sorry! I bet you'll miss this, eh, won't you? Being pinned by a crazy English girl. What do you mean 'miss it'? Well, it is the end of the season on Sunday. (CONT D) I suppose you'll be going home for the summer, won't you? 6

Will I? Do I have to come out and ask you? Yes! Okay! Will you stay in England. For the summer? That depends... On what? On what's here to make me stay. Can't you remember what it's like to be a twenty year old? Davina, you don't know what you're talking about. Don't I? You were full of anger and passion when you were his age - you were just the same and you made all the same mistakes. The only mistake I ever made was allowing you to be too soft with him. That's crazy! If you'd only open your eyes for five minutes, you'd see Paul's really hurt by all this. He's had it easy all his life. You call living with you easy? That's enough! The truth hurts, doesn't it?! Well Paul has got more talent than you ever had and you hate seeing it, don't you! That's ridiculous. You know I'm proud of him. Well maybe you could try showing him that! Try seeing it from Paul's point-of-view. Manni's taken his place in the team and his girlfriend. 7

Manni has a great talent. Maybe he has, but do you really want to lose your son because of someone else's talent? Hi. Is everything OK? Have you seen Emma? Not for a few hours. Has she gone out? No, she's working on her designs. So, she's in her room? Yeah, but I think she's probably pretty busy right now. Thanks for nothing. No problem. I've got a feeling that your shirts will really sell. Oh, I do hope so! Will you still speak to me when you're rich and famous? I'll think about it! Oh, how nice! The happy couple playing happy families! Paul, where I come from, people knock before they come into a room. Oh, Is that right? And where I come from, people don't steal another guy's girlfriend. 8

Oh, just listen to yourself, Paul. You're ridiculous. What do you want? To talk. (CONT'D) On our own. If our friend here could give us some time together. (TO ) If that's what Emma wants. It'll be OK. I'll be downstairs if you need me. I suppose you could say we've got things to talk about. I've just left my mum and dad's place. We had a big argument. So you came over here to talk it out. Is that it? My dad basically told me I'm useless. That's ridiculous. He made it sound like he's been doing me a favour the whole time I've been at Rangers. Like I couldn't have been successful without him, like I'm only good because he's helped me up. He just picks on you because he knows you play well. Yeah, well, that's not the way he tells it. You know what your dad s like, he'll be stressed out before the big game and he'll be taking that out on the people closest to him. You didn't hear him, Em. He meant it. (CONT'D) I miss you Em. 9

(TO ) Paul, don't! Emma? You're choosing Manni over me? Yes, I am. He's makes me happy. Something that you could never do. Manni's not the guy you think he is. What do you mean? You'll see. Just get out. Get out! Let me guess. Ex boyfriend comes round and ruins a perfect evening for two? (WAVES THE COFFEE POT) Coffee? Does Paul think I'm going to let him just walk back into Emma's life? Of course he does. Paul always wants everything his own way, but life's not like that. Yes, he thinks it should be. Everything's OK, is it? Oh yeah, everything's FINE! Just stay away from Emma. OK? Why don't you let her decide that for herself! I guess he doesn't want coffee either. Getting this chance to play in England was like a dream come true for me. 10

But, you're not living a dream, Joe, this is reality. None of your enthusiasm comes across when you play. You're like a different person on the pitch. But the way I'm being asked to play, it doesn't suit me. It's just not me. This is about attitude. You've got to be positive - you know that. Whatever the Boss asks you to do, you've just got to do your best. You've got to be keen and ready for anything. But I am! I'm sorry Joe, but you're not. And you know what? It's a real shame because the club needs your talent right now, but you just don't seem to care about that. Alright mate. You're just in time. Do you want one of my special sandwiches? Oh, very healthy. How do you think you're going to stay fit if you eat all that rubbish? I only offered. I take it something's annoying you then? Only that girlfriend-stealing, South American You're not still talking about Manni, are you? You know how I feel about him. I want rid of him. For ever! Look, I just want to get through to the end of the season, be on the winning team. Having big arguments with you isn't going to help us at all. If you want to win, I've got to play on Sunday! Who says you won't play on Sunday? You never know. 11

You don't get it, do you? My stupid dad'll give that little idiot his big chance and he'll ruin it for all of us! You're getting out of control, mate. So, even you're turning against me now. Look, I've waited years to win this championship and we're just one match away. Ninety minutes. Don't you see, we've never been this close before. And all you can do is talk about yourself! (INTO PHONE) Doug? It's Paul. Listen, can we, can we meet? DOUG DOUG I thought you didn't want to see me again You're good at what you do. You get what you pay for. DOUG (CONT'D) What do you want Paul? DOUG Do you have a pass key to all the rooms in the stadium? Of course. But anything like that can be very expensive. I thought it might be. (CONT'D) You get the same again when the job's done. If you try and cheat me again, I'll make sure you end up in prison. DOUG Your money's good this time. You've got nothing to worry about. DOUG (CONT'D) What do you want me to do? (TO THE LADS) Alright, listen up! Now, we've got a lot of work to do before the big game against London United. 12

They've beaten us for the past five years. But on Sunday, that is going to end. Believe me. Believe in yourselves, believe in London Rangers! (CONT'D) Now, this morning, I m going to try a few changes. We're going to give United a few surprises. We're gonna look at a number of different formations. The attack is starting to look really good, but we still need a lot of work done on our defence. We'll go through all this out there on the pitch. You give me a good effort this morning, and you'll all have a nice surprise at lunch time, okay? Go on, get out there! Oh, Sophie. Okay everyone, before you go! Have you all handed your test samples in? (CONT'D) Anyone who hasn't, please leave your sample bottles by the door as you go out. Steven, you re off. Joe... (CONT'D) I want to play you with Jim and Danny and Halley. I want to try you in the back four. OK? In the back four? Yes, off you go. He must be really desperate now, if he's putting Joe in. Come on Joe! Are you okay, Paul? It's fine, just being careful. take over. Sit this one out OK. I don't want you taking any chances. 13

DOUG It's nice to know you care. Do you want any ice? You'll need the key. No thanks. I'll just take a hot bath. Good tackle Joe! Have you got it? Have you got the money? Let's do it. (TO ) DOUG Joe's amazing! Him and Jimbo are working really well together. You'd better hurry up mate. DOUG (CONT'D) Come on! Shut up! Joe's really enjoying himself. I think I may have found myself a new defensive partnership. Those two look great together. (CONT'D) Okay everybody. That's it. Warm down. Early showers today. (CONT'D) Well played Joe. Thanks Boss. I really felt comfortable in that position. Kind of enjoyed it. I noticed. Thanks. 14

DOUG I'll go and see how Paul is. We've got to move now! Go! Go! (TO ALL) I want all of you to rest and relax before the big game against United on Sunday, so I'm inviting you all down to the London Bistro for lunch today, okay. I would like you all to be there because after the good work that you've all done this morning in training, I'm going to announce a new line up for the team on Sunday. I've got to finish off some paperwork and do the drug tests. Ok, just join us when you can. Sure. See you later son. Thanks, I thought I'd lost it. What is it? Oh.., er, it s just some powder for a foot infection. Thanks for inviting me. I thought you needed a break from work. Oh, you said it! I never thought of myself as a defender. 15

Maybe you've found your ideal position. It feels great when it goes right, doesn't it? Totally. I felt like I made a real difference out there today. I think maybe it's time we had a conversation. (CONT'D) We didn't do too well the other night, did we? Yeah, I'm sorry about all that. I didn't mean to get angry with you. It wasn't just your fault. We were both to blame. Yeah, well, I know you've got a lot on your mind. And I know how you must feel. I know how it is. Football matters to me too, you know. (CONT'D) Everything alright? Yeah, yeah. Couldn't be better. Is something the matter? No, no, not at all. It s the opposite actually. I had a call from Jorge Rodriguez, your international manager. What? But I, I thought he'd lost interest... Well he's coming back to see you play against United. He's obviously keen to see you play. Who knows, you could win us the championship and get to play in the World Cup, all in the same week! Thank you, Boss. There's no need to thank me, lad. (CONT'D) Right, well, I think it's time I told everybody the team! (LOUDER- TO THE WHOLE ROOM) 16

Can you gather around everyone, please. I'm going to announce the team. (TO ) Sophie! What's the hurry? I need to speak to you. Are you alright? (CONT'D) What's the matter? It's about Manni. (CONT'D) Look at Manni's drug test. It's positive. What?! That can't be right. I'm sorry. The tests don't lie. (CONT'D) And they say he's guilty. 17
