ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET

DUSTER Leather pads gently beat 77-84% of all insoluble soils from the backing. The Leather straps go in the direction of the fringe on both ends, reversing the rotation mid rug. Insoluble soils drop down into the dust bin. Airborne particulates are vacummed through our HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor) and filtered awa It s like 1000 grandmas with 1000 brooms. 1

ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET WASH TUB State of the Art submersion cleaning technique. Utilizes dye locking chemicals and detergents to thoroughly clean both sides of the rug. Gentle wash cycle for all natural fibers. Temperature controlled for maximum results. Designed for Rugs up to 14 long. Modernized technique developed by leading industry experts. 2

ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET CENTRIFUGE Rinse and Spin cycle. Rinses remaining detergents from fibers. Spins out 91% of the moisture. Essential for speed drying. Any remaining fugitive dyes are flushed out with the rinse and spin Effective for rugs up to 16 long 3

DRYING CHAMBER Climate controlled for maximum drying results. Specialized rack system to prevent: buckling, shrinking, and warping Clean room utilized for additional services: fringe brightening, color correction, sprout and white knot correction Air movers used to keep the moisture moving through the air. Dehumidifiers employed to pull excess moisture from the air. Space for specialty floor drying and blocking. 4

ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET ABRASH Abrash Is a naturally occurring phenomenon In Hand knotted rugs. Occurs when new spools of fiber are introduced to the same dye bath. Different spools accept dyes and fade differently creating the light and dark striations of the same colored dye. This is Not correctable and will NOT worsen with submerging. It is recognized as a truly unique hand woven rug because of this imperfection. Often times this is sought after by buyers wanting true hand knotted oriental rugs. 5

ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET SYMMETRY Symmetry the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis. True Oriental Hand-Knotted rugs are never perfectly symmetrical. This is a highly sought after trait, making the piece more unique. Asymmetrical rugs have a much higher price point. Hand-knotted rugs are Asymmetrical based on the weaver s imperfections. Perfectly symmetrical rugs are machine made or woven and still have high price points. 6

FRINGE Fringe is an extension of the foundation warp yarns. Any damage or excessive wear must be listed on the invoice. 89% of all fringe is cotton. Browning is correctable at no additional cost. If Bleeding into the fringe is present, it can be corrected at an additional cost. Cleaning fringe in plant includes tub washing and power rinsing. Fringe brightening is available at an additional cost. 7

SIDE CORD (SELVAGE) The side cord or selvage is the binding down the edges of area rugs. All damages or excessive wear must be noted on the invoice. If there are visible repairs that have been made they must be documented on the invoice and in the photographs. If damaged we can offer repairs for those facilities with relationships outside the facility at a separate cost. Selvage is cleaned in the tub then power rinsed similarly to fringe. BEFORE AFTER SELVAGE (EDGE) REPAIR 8

SPROUTS OR LOOSE PILE YARNS No real cause for concern; aesthetically displeasing. Can be caused by vacuuming. Do not pull them out as this creates bare spots. Monitor pets closely, some may play and pull at the sprouts. The pulls should be repaired before they become larger bare spots. Hourly rates available to correct problem rugs. 9

WHITE KNOTS White Knots occur when the waver adds a new spool of yarn to their existing foundation. They are hidden by the pile until the rug becomes worn. Often overlooked until cleaned when the knots become bright white again. NEVER cut a white knot, it will create a hole in the foundation. Color correction is the cheapest repair but is not permanent. Replying wool around the know is permanent but quite expensive. Padding is suggested to slow the fiber s pile wear. 10

ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET DYE MIGRATION (BLEEDING) We take every precaution to prevent bleeding (anti dye) in plant If caused in plant we correct at no additional cost. Pre-existing bleeding can be corrected at an additional cost. Bleeding is caused when fugitive dyes (dyes that haven t been removed after post construction cleaning) are allowed to run once exposed to moisture. We can chemically remove the fugitive dyes and prevent the dyes from locking onto fibers. Hourly rates are available for correcting pre-existing dye migration 11

STAIN LOCKING Stains can lock into fibers due to: Age, Treatments, and Substance Spilled Ask power questions: How long has it been there? What was spilled? What did you use initially? Set expectations: Alkalinity can cause dye migration. Acidity can damage natural fibers. We will do everything in our power to correct the issues, but some things are NOT correctable. 12

FADING There are many different types of fading Bleach Fade We are equipped to color correct fading caused by bleach. It is an additional hourly cost and the customer will be contacted if interested. Sun Fading Is not currently correctable at our facilities. Offer Suggestions: Turn the rug every 3 months. Keep the curtains drawn during peak hours. Chemical Fading Caused by off gasing. Suggestions: Rotate rug intermittently. Move furniture around periodically. 13

ORIENTAL & FINE AREA RUG TRAINING BOOKLET DRY ROT Dry Rot is a condition in which the foundation fibers of an area rug have begun to deteriorate, becoming brittle and coarse. Dry Rot is not correctable at any of our facilities. It is highly recommended that dry rot be repaired by a licensed professional before the cleaning can take place. If you are not sure if you are seeing dry rot call your rug center manager immediately. 14

RUG PADDING Independent textile services published: Unpadded area rugs lost 19% pile height while padded rugs lost 5-10% pile height Padding absorbs most of the grinding action caused by footsteps increasing the pile s lifespan. Protects underneath flooring from wear caused by heavy soils that have sifted through the weave over time. Pads have a life span of 1-3 years. If pet urine is absorbed they should be discarded and replaced immediately. 15
