TE: TYPICAL PERATI data are obtaned from drect measurement or by calculaton from publshed characterstc curves. Adjustment of the rf grd voltage to obtan the specfed plate current at the specfed bas, screen and plate voltages s assumed. If ths procedure s followed, there wll be lttle varaton n output power when the tube s changed, even though there may be some varaton n grd and screen current. The grd and screen currents whch result when the desred plate current s obtaned are ncdental and vary from tube to tube. These current varatons cause no dffculty so long as the crcut mantans the correct voltage n the presence of the varatons n current. In the case of Class C Servce, f grd bas s obtaned prncpally by means of a gr d resstor, the resstor must be adjustable to obtan the requred bas voltage when the correct rf grd voltage s appled. The base of the tube may be down or up at the convenence of the crcut desgner. SCKET - The EIMAC SK -840 socket and SK -806 chmney have been desgned especally for the 5CX1500A. The use of recommended arflow rates through these sockets provdes effectve forced -ar coolng of the tube. Ar forced nto the bottom of the socket passes over the tube termnals through the Ar Chmney, and exts through the anode coolng fns. 3

CLIG - The maxmum temperature ratng for the anode core of the 5CX1500A s 250 C. Suffcent forced -ar crculaton must be provded to keep the temperature of the anode at the base of the coolng fns and the temperature of the ceramc meta 1 seals below 250 C. Ar -flow requrements to mantan seal temperature at 225 C n 50 C ambent ar are tabulated below (for operaton below 30 MHz). PLATE DISSIPATI (ATTS) 1000 1500 AIR FL (CFM) 27 47 SEA LEVEL PRESSURE DRP (ICHES of ATER ).33.76 6000 FEET AIRFL (CFM) 33 1,8 PRESSURE DRP (ICHES of ATER) * Snce the power dsspated by the flament represents about 200 watts and snce grd -plus- screen -plus- suppressor dsspaton can, under some condtons, represent another 125 watts, allowance has been made n preparng ths tabulaton for an addtonal 325 watts dsspaton. The blower selected n a gven applcaton must be capable of supplyng the desred ar flow at a back pressure equal to the pressure drop shown above plus any drop encountered n ducts and flters. At other alttudes and ambent temperatures the flow rate must be modfed to obtan equvalent coolng. The flow rate and correspondng pressure dfferental must be determned ndvdually n such cases, usng rated maxmum temperatures as the crtera for satsfactory coolng. ELECTRICAL FILAMET PERATI - The rated flament voltage for the 5CX1500A s 5.0 volts. Flament voltage, as measured at the socket, should be mantaned wthn ±5% of ths value or below to obtan maxmum tube lfe. ITERMDULATI DISTRTI - The Rado Frequency Lnear Amplfer operatng condtons ncludng dstorton data are the results of operaton n a neutralzed, grd- drven amplfer. Plots of IM dstorton versus power output under two -tone condton for a typcal tube are shown on next page. GRID PERATI - The rated dsspaton of the grd s 25 watts. Ths s approxmately the.40.95 product of dc grd current and peak postve grd voltage. peraton at bas and drve levels near those lsted wll nsure safe operaton. SCREE PERATI - The power dsspated by the screen of the 5CX1500A must not exceed 75 watts. Screen dsspaton, n cases where there s no ac appled to the screen, s the smple product of the screen voltage and the screen current. If the screen voltage s modulated, the screen dsspaton wll depend upon rms screen current and voltage. Screen dsspaton s lkely to rse to excessve values when the plate voltage, bas voltage, or plate load are removed wth flament and screen voltages appled. Sutable protectve means must be provded to lmt the screen dsspaton to 75 watts n the event of crcut falure. SUPPRESSR PERATI - The rated dsspaton of the suppressor s 25 watts. Suppressor current wll be zero or very nearly zero for all typcal operatng condtons specfed. The 5CX1500A has been desgned for zero voltage operaton of the suppressor grd for most applcatons. PLATE DISSIPATI - The plate- dsspaton ratngs for the 5CX1500A s 1000 watts for Class -C plate- modulated servce and 1500 watts for Class -C telegraphy. In Class -AB servce the plate dsspaton ratng s 1500 watts. HIGH VLTAGE - The 5CX1500A operates at voltages whch can be deadly, and the equpment must be desgned properly and operatng precautons must be followed. Equpment must be desgned so that no one can come n contact wth hgh voltages. All equpment must nclude safety enclosures for hgh- voltage crcuts and termnals, wth nterlock swtches to open the prmary crcuts of the power supples and to dscharge hgh voltage condensers whenever access doors are opened. Interlock swtches must not be bypassed or "cheated" to allow operaton wth access doors open. Always remember that HIGH VLTAGE CA KILL. SPECIAL APPLICATIS - If t s desred to operate ths tube under condtons wdely dfferent from those gven here wrte to the Power Grd Tube Dvson, EIMAC Dvson of Varan, 301 Industral ay, San Carlos, Calforna 94070, for nformaton and recommendatons. 4
