So here are some tips so you too can paint my patterns with the soft color palette that I use In most of my designs. To get a soft background I will basecoat with my chosen color. I will then shade the edges. When I shade I do it very softly. I then take a Palmer 2" white bristle brush (or large brush to fit surface) and Snow White and drybrush all over the background. I use a very light, feathery touch and will gradually increase pressure until I get the desired effect. (You can always go darker but you cant take away color.) I will then go back and shade again. When I basecoat the details of my designs, I will do two or three very light coats instead of one or two heavy ones. I can control my base color better this way. I will then shade softly. I drybrush most basecoating with either Snow White or a very soft version of the color that I used for the basecoat. I will shade again, either by using the same color shade or deepen the shading with a darker color. When I shade I use a very light touch, again to get a soft look. I may then drybrush again in areas to soften a bit further with Snow White. When I do my line work I again will use a very light, feathery touch, barely touching the surface. 4 artistsclub.com
