The story about Silkeborg Uldspinderi Silkeborg Uldspinderi which was established in 1987 draws threads back to the 1940s, when the family s first wool spinning mill was founded. Since then, raw wool has been the focus of Silkeborg Uldspinderi, and the fascination of wool as a unique natural material has remained intact over the years. Wool has endless possibilities, because it s nature varies depending on it s geographical origins and the particular sheep it comes from. In addition, the spinning, the dyeing, the weaving and the processing that follows open up for a wide range of choices when creating these beautiful and lasting products. Silkeborg Uldspinderi has travelled the world to find the best raw materials and cutting edge expertise. Today the company has offices in Peru and Lithuania where the production takes place. The Alpaca lives in Peru, and Lithuania has the specialized knowledge about textiles and the international professionalism required. 4 5

From raw to irresistible Wool Wool is a unique, natural product with endless possibilities. For three generations Silkeborg Uldspinderi has handled wool, from the finest, lightest and softest qualities to coarse and heavy wool. All wool types insulate against both heat and cold. They are naturally dirt repellent and have antibacterial capacities. Wool is not just wool. The sheep, the fiber and the processing have a significant impact on the final product, whether it is a plaid, a cushion, or a scarf. The production process from raw wool to the end product requires careful handling with respect for the origins of the wool and the sheep the wool comes from. 8

Porto Porto is a double faced quality. This means that it has both a neutral white and a coloured side which appears beautifully when the throw is in use. The yarn from the neutral side blends with the coloured one in a slightly flecked expression which brings the throw to life neatly. Can also be used as a cape. With its innovative, simple design, shortly after its launch the Twist a Twill became part of the assortment in the Louisiana museum shop in Humlebæk. Artisanry for centuries Handling alpaca fibers is a combination of artisanry and art which has been passed down from generation to generation. Long before the Inca empire emerged, people and alpacas lived side by side. They still do. In the meantime, the artisanry has been refined over the centuries and transformed into the process we know today. The difference between alpaca and baby alpaca is that baby alpaca consists of some the finest fibers. Silkeborg Uldspinderi uses both types of alpaca fibers which are sent to selected weavers in Peru and Lithuania, depending on the end product to be produced. 80 81

When only the softest is soft enough Alpaca Silkeborg Uldspinderi has a soft spot for the alpaca. The alpaca lives on the world s roof in the Andes, where it adapts to temperatures fluctuating from -20 degrees Celcius to +30 degrees Celcius in less than 24 hours. The alpaca s fantastic fur insulates against both heat and cold. Silkeborg Uldspinderi has gently transferred this unique capacity to its products together with two other special characteristics of the alpaca fibers: softness and flexibility. The difference between alpaca and baby alpaca fibers is that baby alpaca consists of the finer fibers.
