These programmes, combined with our functional development schemes, provide clear, defined paths for our people to achieve their full potential. We are professionally recognised around the world for our commitment to our people and our industry-leading programmes have been adopted as best practice by industry bodies. I believe this has been the best and most exciting start to a career anyone could wish for. Developing your skills with colleagues across the globe What appealed to me, and made the graduate programme as Subsea 7 stand out from others, was the opportunity to be involved in the life cycle of a project. From the beginning, you join a project and are given your own part of the scope to be responsible for and see this through from start to finish. I liked the idea of being involved in all the analysis and procedure work in the office, and also having the opportunity of following it up offshore. I was also excited at the prospect of three two-week courses in different European cities together with graduates from across the world. Not only for the possibility to learn more about the industry but, and perhaps more importantly, because of the chance to build a network of young colleagues across the globe and make a lot of new friends. And I m happy to say that I wasn t disappointed. The graduate programme has given me an overview and insight into all the different areas where Subsea 7 works. That does not mean it makes you an expert in everything, but it gives you the ability to follow a conversation on the topic, and to understand the basics. For me, more importantly, it had given me an understanding of what you need to learn if you are looking to work within a specific field such as spool installation, pipelay, heavy lifting, umbilical or flexible load outs and installations, or diving intervention. In addition you find out where in Subsea 7 the expertise on this area sits, so that if you ever have problems you know who to contact! What I enjoyed most was the days filled with interesting presentations and exercises given by industry leading experts in their field, and evenings making lots of new good friends from all the different offices. My experience at Subsea 7 so far has taught me that if someone gives you a challenge, take it and don t be afraid to ask for help along the way. To those considering joining the graduate programme, I promise that your colleagues will be more than happy to show off what they know if you ask them to explain something to you. Get to know the people around you, find out what they re good at and use your network within the organisation to improve your skills in your field. This course taught us how to deal with cultural differences, prejudices and learn a little of the habits in each of the participating Paula Brevilieri, Engineer, Brazil countries. We had excellent teachers who have managed to widen our vision and make us realise how much we can learn in face of so many differences, which facilitated the integration of the participants during the programme. It s hard to believe I started working at Subsea 7 almost a year ago. It has certainly been a year of great opportunities and experiences. For me, it was about enjoying the moment, because the company is not only providing a chance for professional development, but also a great opportunity to mature and for personal growth. I would recommend that any future graduates do the same. For those starting in Subsea 7 Brazil, the next projects are very interesting and challenging even for the engineers who already have experience. Good advice is to enjoy this moment of great learning for the company, to expand and put in practice their own knowledge. Experiencing more than I thought possible My most memorable moment to date was flying out in a chopper to the Seven Sisters in the PSVM field, Block 31, Angola. As we approached the vessel the PSVM FPSO came into view along with the Seven Seas and it was the first time I d seen anything like it. With all the activity going on in the field and several state-of-the-art vessels all within a kilometre of each other, it was an unforgettable experience. It didn t stop there. Rotating through several departments (projects, offshore resources, central engineering etc.) gave me a good, broad experience of what Subsea 7 does and a good opportunity to really understand what I want to do in my career in engineering. It allows you to appreciate what each department does and to bear this in mind in the future! I was given a great piece of advice from a lead engineer on Block 31 which I would like to share. Take a step back and count to 10. It s easy to get sucked into a situation and let it get the better of you, especially if clients and subcontractors are looking to you to take the lead in a situation. Always remember that you ve got support from your colleagues and your manager will always help you out if things get a little too much to handle yourself. It was a great piece of guidance and also showed me that I am working in a truly supportive environment. Robert Adam, Graduate Engineer, UK 6
Communicating my message, making an impression I would say that the graduate programme is a unique experience where we can face so many different cultures and the way people work in their countries. It is very important as we are in a global company and all the time we need to communicate with people from the other offices around the world. Also, the possibility of having experienced professionals showing us the directions to deliver work safely and with quality makes us realise the importance Subsea 7 gives to the graduate engineer. One of the best pieces of advice I have been given since joining Subsea 7 is, if you want your information to be properly understood, you have to make it crystal clear. Since then, I try to think of what is the best way to bring out the information, procedures and meetings so I can be clearly understood. I think it very important to always have the willingness to learn new things, even if it does not directly affect your work today. This is a dynamic industry so any information can be useful in future projects. One day you can be working with risers and in the following week you need to know about fabrication issues. Each day is different and each day there is a new challenge. Vinicius Mendonça, Installation Engineer, Brazil Challenging moves made me more confident I wanted to work for an engineering company where there were a mix of different disciplines and nationalities and Subsea 7 looked like a very interesting company with many opportunities to develop myself both in the short and long term. The CGS graduate programme really reflected this and I liked the idea of trying different departments. I have had many interesting and challenging experiences but one that stands out would be the switching of departments as I had to learn new ways of working and build relationships with a lot of new people. The other graduates became great friends and colleagues, being part of that group was very important to me. The graduate programme gave me the opportunity to understand the interfaces between the commercial departments when I was starting to work as a normal project cost controller. Working together with the other departments makes me work more efficiently and with a better understanding that what I am doing is right. Ingrid Schiefloe, Senior Tender Estimator, Norway Diversity in my experience, diversity in the friends I ve made I have always wanted to work for Subsea 7 because they have the best graduate programmes in the industry plus they give young people very good opportunities to develop their career. The graduate programme has helped me to understand all aspects of the business. Knowing a bit of everything, and gaining an understanding of different parts of the business enables me to work better in my own field. Again, I can smoothly transit into other fields in the future. There have been many great experiences since I joined Subsea 7. In particular I have enjoyed making new friends from Norway, Aberdeen, France, Angola (learning different cultures - their ways of greetings). I also enjoyed the visits to the Oil Museum in Stavanger, the visit to the Seven Borealis in Rotterdam, and the visit to the National Hyperbaric Centre in Aberdeen, to mention but a few. Now that I have completed my graduate programme I have taken up the role of a Hook-up Engineer. Currently, I am offshore working as a Field Engineer. A lot of my time is spent modelling and solving technical issues and making sure that the work is done according to specified codes and standards. I am challenged in my job and learn something new every day. Uchenna Ikegwuonu, Junior Project Engineer, Nigeria Surmounting challenges, limitless opportunities I was first drawn to the Subsea 7 Graduate Engineer Development Scheme (GEDS) because of the opportunity to be exposed to upstream works that come with hands on experience out in the field. The industry-leading graduate program appealed to me, demonstrating that the company is sincere in nurturing graduates. True to its promise, the graduate programme provided an overview of the critical functions in the company. This allowed me to learn and follow on projects quickly. Not to forget, as part of the GEDS, I attended training sessions in Europe where I met and built network with fellow graduates from other countries. Everyday is fast changing and I have since participated in various projects, all challenging in its own way. I won t deny it was hard work, but in return, I was rewarded with a dynamic and interesting job. I also had the opportunity to travel and meet people across the globe who played a big part in enhancing my learning experience. I believe my career with Subsea 7 provides me with real opportunities and a fulfilling career. Kah Wei Seah, Project Engineer, Singapore 7
