American Institute of Architects New Hampshire Chapter 2009 2010 High School Design Competition Program Educational Objectives To increase your awareness of the relationships between space, human scale and function. To gain experience in recognizing the various challenges in planning and designing indoor and outdoor spaces for specific uses. To exercise your analytical abilities and creativity in solving the problems you have defined. To gain experience in communicating your planning and design ideas using scale drawings and models. Program This year s AIANH Competition will be to design a Performing Arts Center (PAC) as an addition to your local High School or other academic building on your campus. The PAC will encompass performances by the students ranging from music in the concert hall to multi-media contemporary theatre, a symposium focusing on the nexus of your school s Arts and Science curriculum, presentations and workshops. This facility will also be open to the residents in your community. The Performing Arts Center should be like no other; both a signature work of architecture and a unique facility combining many specialized venues. Site Each student or team of students (no more than two per team) will need to provide a site plan drawn to scale for the purpose of illustrating how the proposed Performing Arts Center relates to the immediate site where it connects to the existing building. Students are required to obtain the site plan of their own school. In the event students can not find a copy of their school s site plan or determine the site cannot accommodate an addition, a generic site plan will be provided. A Vision For The Performing Arts Center The creation of the Performing Arts Center stems from the conviction that education must occur in an environment which offers diversity of thought, dialogue and exchange of ideas. This facility should be able to provide a platform where science can interact with artistic creation and become home to an emerging collaborative community of artists. The PAC should celebrate the Performing Arts. A rich environment where imagination meets Music, Science and the Arts

The following spaces should be carefully designed such that their content, size (square footage) and organization will create an expressive character as well as a functional floor plan.
