Over 1,800 masterworks, including Chinese and Asian modern and contemporary art, contemporary Chinese ink wash, contemporary Chinese calligraphy, classical Chinese paintings and calligraphy, Chinese antiques, jewellery, fine watches and rare vintages, with a total estimated value of over HK$700 million, will meet collectors and connoisseurs alike in this extravaganza of arts! Auction Highlights - Autumn 2016 Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art 10:30am, 3 rd October Poly Auction Hong Kong presents Pink Nude on Floral Sheet, a classic early work by Sanyu, from Robert Frank s collection in this Autumn. The painting features a rare mix of visual elements and motifs from the early years of the artist s career. A special section dedicated to Wu Guanzhong will present an array of his iconic works, including A Lotus Pond, the largest painting of Wu in the history of auction, as well as Early Spring from mid-1970s and other iconic works such as The Fisherman s Revenge, highlighting different phases and milestones of Wu Guanzhong s artistic career, as well as the transformation of his techniques and subjects, from still life to Chinese landscape. A Flute Player, a masterpiece by Fan Tchunpi, symbolises the realist artist s aesthetical fusion of Western and Chinese paintings. Lin Fengmian s cubist reinterpretation of Peking opera in The Fisherman s Revenge is also one to watch. Selected abstract pieces by Chu Tehchun chronicle the three decades of his artistic career, while Zao Wuki s 20.8.84 represent a turning point of contemporary art in the 20 th century. The contemporary art section features Zeng Fanzhi s Mask Series and Mao Yan s early work Black Portrait, as well as a rare revolution-themed series by Ai Xuan and Li Shan s early Rogue Series. The pioneering visions of Wu Guanzhong in terms of form and color are best illustrated in A Lotus Pond (1997). The realistic motif is depicted through a pointillistic combination of dots and strokes, creating a dynamic symphony of rhythm and visual tension. This renewed technique of ink wash beacons new direction of traditional Chinese painting a veritable milestone in his 50-plus-year artistic career. Earlier this year in the Spring Auction, Poly Auction Hong Kong presented another masterpiece The Zhou village by Wu Guanzhong, boasts a record-breaking auction price of HK$236 million at Poly Auction Hong Kong, which also sets a record-breaking auction price in the category of Asia Modern and Contemporary oil paintings and among all artist s works up for auction. 1

This September, Cui will showcase his work at Manezh Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia, followed by the Glossiness of Uncarved Jade grand exhibition at Manezh Central Exhibition Hall, Moscow in October. The technique of ink piling was pioneered by Huang Binhong and further developed by Li Keran. Cui Ruzhuo took the sophisticated artistry to new heights, while also mastering Zhang Daqian s splashed ink painting techniques. Cui also blended Pan Tianshou s renowned finger-ink painting of flowers and birds into his very own aesthetics. Cui s extraordinary combination of ink piling, finger-ink and splashed ink paintings on large-scale paintings consolidated his unprecedented status as China s ink painting maestro. The auction presents 32 of Cui Ruzhuo s remarkable works, including in particular his 96-foot Lotus in the Autumn Wind noted for the significant contrast of the delicate lotus and dark leaves depicted with the technique of ink piling against the rugged rocks in the background. This auction of his precious collection is, without a doubt, one of the most sought-after segments of the season. Born in Xingyi, Guizhou; Wang Boqun (1885-1944) was an influential figure in pivotal historic events such as the National Protection War and the Constitutional Protection Movement. He was also appointed Minister of Transport of Nanjing s Nationalist Government, Member of the Central Executive Committee and Committee Member of the Nationalist Government. Besides closely associated with influential politicians in the likes of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek, the illustrious personage was in close touch with legendary painters and calligraphists. The auction will also feature Autumn of Mount E'mei, one of the most important still life paintings by Li Keran in the 1950s. Completed in 1956, the work features an explosion of intense colors on the background landscape that contrasts vividly with the restrained and refined strokes on the foreground depicting woods and people. In addition to an incisive and imposing conception, the technique of ink piling also evokes a serene and noble mentality. Although essentially a still life, Autumn of Mount E'mei paves the way to the classic red landscapes series in the later stage of Li s artistic career. More than outlining autumn leaves, red ink is piled up in a naturalistic way to depict rugged cliff on the background. The painting is featured in the artist s still life album published by Beijing s People s Fine Arts Publishing House in 1959. The book is one of the few publications compiling the most important works of the artist. Li Keran Autumn of Mount E'mei Painted in 1956 Ink and color on paper mounted 55 43.8cm.
