United Nations flagship ICT in education conference Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development 4 and 8 March 2019 UNEO Headquarters Fontenoy Building, Paris, France Entrance: 125 avenue de Suffren Provisional Agenda Mobile Learning Week is a United Nations flagship ICT in education event. UNEO, in partnership with its confirmed partners the International Telecommunication Union and the Profuturo Foundation will convene a special edition of Mobile Learning Week (MLW) from 4 to 8 March 2019, at the UNEO Headquarters building in Paris (France). The five-day event, under the theme Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable development will start with the Global Conference - Principles for AI: Towards a humanistic approach?, followed by a one-day Policy Forum and s, a two-day International Symposium and a half-day of Strategy Labs. On 8 March, towards the close of MLW, participants will be invited to join the celebration of International Women s Day, particularly a debate on Women in AI to be held in UNEO Headquarters. During the entire week, exhibitions and demonstrations of innovative AI applications for education and more than 20 workshops will be organized by international partners and all programme sectors of UNEO.

Monday 4 March 2019, Room 1 GLOBAL CONFERENCE - PRINPLES FOR AI: TOWARDS A HUMANISTIC APPROACH? The overall purpose of this conference is to raise awareness and promote reflection on the opportunities and challenges that AI and its correlated technologies pose, notably in the area of transparency and accountability. The conference will also explore the potential of AI in relation to the SDGs. For this purpose, UNEO intends to act as a convener among Member States, civil society, media, the technical community, academia, and the cultural and creative industries, building on its record of multi-stakeholder consultation and consensus building. UNEO will, through this conference, further facilitate dialogue between participants who represent a variety of stakeholders from around the world on the potential benefits and challenges of AI and its applications, particularly in the areas related to education, the sciences, culture, and communication and information, with a specific focus on gender equality and Africa. Discussions will focus on the universal aspects of AI, its ethical dimensions, and how to ensure human-centered development and design in AI applications. The session will examine the major impact of AI on sustainable development, as well as the opportunities and challenges related to its deployment for Agenda 2030. It will provide an overview of the current, immediate and potential ethical challenges raised by AI. It will also provide a reflection on different alternatives for establishing ethical frameworks and normative standards related to AI. They will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the development of public policies for AI, and how to coordinate, at the global level, actions related to the development of frameworks and principles for AI. The plenary will be moderated by a member of the Secretary General s Highlevel Panel on Digital Cooperation. 2

Day 2 - Tuesday 5 March 2019 POLICY FORUM and WORKSHOPS The Policy Forum will offer a platform to discuss the different pathways that governments are using to harness AI and ensure that it does not deepen the existing inequalities in AI-powered education. A number of Ministers of Education and ICT from various countries will be invited jointly by UNEO and ITU. The s, selected through a call for proposals, will facilitate demonstrations of innovative policies, research, projects and solutions that use AI tools and frontier technologies for education and learning. The presenters are to be chosen from a wide range of international organizations, NGOs, governmental agencies and academic institutions. During the two-day event, UNEO will gather participants from around the world to share experiences and plan joint actions with a view to harnessing AI to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). It will feature keynote speeches, high-level plenary addresses, demonstrations of AI applications and numerous breakout sessions, which will facilitate actions towards: (1) inclusive and equitable use of AI in education; (2) AI-powered education and learning; (3) skills development for jobs and life in the AI era; and (4) transparent and auditable use of education data.
