Tonight at 5pm the Manhattan Beach Rotary holds our annual President s Reception at the home of Larry Wolfe.

Rotary Olympics - July 30th President Tom kicked off the meeting recognizing the gold medal winning Manhattan Beach Rotary Club. The lighting of the torch ceremony was performed by Russ Samuels. He is a walkingtalking advertisement for his physical training business. There is not an ounce of body fat on that guy. President Tom was unable to convince Roger Cox to parachute in for the ceremony. Roger said it wasn t the danger of parachuting that discouraged him; it was the Queen s dress and pearls that Tom wanted him to wear. Flag salute was led by one of our newer members, Chief Robert Espinosa. Thought of the day was presented by Jim Lambert. He shared a story about a bad day he was having and how his mood was completely transformed through that act of helping a homeless person. His generosity resulted in not having any money left to pay the toll of Highway 73 toll road which resulted in him getting a traffic ticket. In spite of his bad luck, he turned a bad day into a happy day. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. Quote from Dalai Lama. Announcements Les Silverman was recognized by President Tom for getting his picture in the Beach Reporter (page 10). The story reported on Les providing vision care for needy Afghan children ranging in age from 6 to 12. Some of the children were badly hurt from war and others just needed glasses. It was another example of our Rotary members providing Service Above Self. Happy Dollars Norm Levin reported that his daughter was recently married. He also reported that he recently celebrated a non-milestone birthday. I don t know about Norm, but when you get to be the age of the writer of these notes, every birthday is a milestone. Ian Jackson reported that he and his lovely wife, Faye, celebrated 38 years of marriage on Saturday. There was a double celebration, because their daughter announced her engagement last month. Duke Winser

was happy, but a little worn out from entertaining his grandson who was visiting him from out of town. Duke was also celebrating the promotion of his stepson, Jose, to the rank of Sergeant. Dr. Chris announced that his office manager was dating Clay Stanley, member of the USA 6 man Olympic volleyball team. Next time the USA hosts the Olympics, we expect Dr. Chris to get all of us tickets to the volleyball competition. Randy Meadors announced that the Casa Hogar project is receiving more Rotary recognition. Ingo Werk, Past District Governor (5280), joined Randy on a 2 day visit to Mexico. Ingo and Randy were joined one morning for breakfast by Fernando Vara, Past District Governor of Baja California (4100). This networking process has resulted in other Rotary Clubs in Mexico becoming involved in the support and financing of Casa Hogar. Lindy Murrell was happy to announce her grandson came in second place in a model airplane flying competition in Canada. More Announcements We have a good turnout for the July 31st. District Breakfast. 17 of our members will be attending. Rotary International Convention 2012 in Thailand. Wade Austin and Ingo Werk reported on their experiences attending the Rotary International Convention in Thailand (May 6-9). Wade and Ingo were accompanied by their spouses (Wanda and Mary). Over 200 countries were represented. There was a mix of business meetings, socializing, and cultural tours. They were very positive about the trip and encouraged everyone to consider attending the 2013 convention in Portugal.

Putting the Super in Superintendent Mark Lipps, Program Chair, introduced the speaker for the morning. Mark German is the Senior Foundation Director for The Broad Superintendent Academy. His topic The Education Crisis and America s Future had everyone s attention. The Broad Superintendents Academy is an advanced development program that identifies and prepares experienced leaders to successfully run urban public education systems. There are 450 participants representing 200 school systems in the U.S. If you would like more information

regarding this subject here are some web sites recommended by Mr. German: http://www.greatschools.org/ http://www.studentsfirst.org/ http://www.edreformnow.org/ http://www.broadcenter.org/academy/ The meeting ended with our traditional drawing. Steve Lore was the lucky winner of a beer tasting at Uncorked Wine Shop in Hermosa Beach. Dan Saks failed to draw the lucky marble. John Acker encouraged those who have not yet paid their club dues for the year (you know who you are) to pay up. President Tom closed the meeting with the announcement that next week our speaker will be former Galaxy soccer star Abdul Sesay. Yours in Rotary, John Hugunin RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the quiet revolution of hope. Isn t it time for you to: Reach out to someone who needs help. Develop a relationship with a club in another country. Become acquainted with the customs and culture of a faraway place.

Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Patti Panucci, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club s attendance record is reported district-wide. Let s help Patti keep that attendance record high--report your make-up to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you re not a Board member, and it s a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Patti s job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you re not sure it s a make-up--hey, tell her anyway. Local Rotary Make-Up Clubs Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
