Judy focuses on design, brushstrokes, edges, and the importance of understanding the limited palette, while encouraging creative thought and individual style. Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31. Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28. Paper towels Optional: baby wipes (these are great hand cleaners!) Reference material : photos, preferably of rather simple scenes with lots of light and shadow. Also, I prefer that you bring original photographs taken by you or someone you know. SATURDAY MORNING ACRYLIC CLASS Karen Foster Meeting students where they are and assessing what they would like to achieve, Karen helps you reach your next level of skill in painting. You can expect to learn the importance of composition, light and shadow, and basic painting skills in a fun, artistic space. Dates: Jan. 12, 19, 26. Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23. Mar. 2, 16, 23, 30. Winter Spring 2019 page 4 WORKSHOPS IN 2019 FRIDAY ALL-DAY ACRYLIC PAINTING Margie Whittington Spend a Friday with us and learn the basics of acrylic painting on canvas. Instructor, Margie Whittington is popular for her relaxed and engaged class and her personal flair with traditional landscapes, flowers, and stilllife. Spend the day with Margie and company and you may find yourself creating something beautiful! DATES: Jan. 25. Feb. 22. Mar. 30. Apr. 26. May 25. TIME: 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. FEE: $40 each class SUPPLIES: Basic set of acrylics, brushes, medium-size canvases OIL-PAINTING WORKSHOP - Dates to be Announced Judy Gelfert Since she began showing her work in 2002, she has received such honors 1st Place in a National Society of Artists Juried Competition and acceptances in The Oil Painters of America National Juried Competitions. This oil painting workshop is for beginning and advanced painters alike. Judy will offer insight on how to achieve dramatic light effects in painting, as well as how to express elusive qualities such as energy or calmness in a painting. Though she will focus on painting in oils, those wanting to use acrylics are also welcome, but should bring extender to slow drying time. DATES: Sat. & Sun. TBA TIME: 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m. FEE: $130 for both days. SUPPLIES FOR OILS: Easel : The gallery has several easels you may use. Oil paints: napthol red or Grumbacher red (This is the opaque red Judy prefers. If you can t find it, bring cadmium red light); alizarin crimson; burnt Sienna; ultramarine blue; Prussian blue; cadmium yellow light; yellow ochre; cadmium orange; sap green; titanium white. Brushes: #8,#10, and #12 bright bristle (not synthetic), #2 round bristle (for sketching) Judy prefers Lexington II brushes by Windsor and Newton. Winter Spring 2019 page 5 SUNDAY EXPERIMENTAL ART DAY (SEAD) Winter/Fall 2018 Karen Foster is offering exciting new approaches to art making. Come join the adventure. TIME: 12:00-5:00ish. Please be in your seat and ready to start at 12:00. You may want to bring a snack or cold drink to each class. FEE: $50 AGES: 16 and up DATES: Jan 20 th : Pattern Language with Mark Making, Part I (you may take one or both classes. Part II is in Feb). In this class, Karen will teach you to write without words, asemic writing, and let marks express emotion. Mark making can be loose and gestural or structured and controlled. She will teach you to make your own Cola Pen that will be used in this class. You will experiment with all kinds of papers and inks. Karen will be sticking to neutral tones such as blacks, whites, sepias and warm colors. For the Cola Pen you will need a rinsed out soda can, a box cutter, duct tape or electrical tape, masking tape, an old pencil or old paint brush handle and ruler. Other Supplies: Bring any of the following you may have on hand. Please label everything with your name because supplies may be moving around the room. Black watercolor ink, white watercolor ink, black Indian ink, a white paint marker, assortment of brushes or sponge brushes, pieces of watercolor paper in various sizes, Bristol paper, yupo paper, rice paper, used teabags. Must haves: two small 3 or 4 oz. spray bottles and gloves. You may use Karen s supplies for $10 if you don t have any. Wear old clothes as you will be using bleach and inks that stain. Feb.17 th : Part II Pattern Language: A collage of asemic writing. In part I, Karen used all kinds of papers and inks to make specific and personal marks. We will be sticking to neutral tones. Your asemic writings will be cut and assembled to create a stunning abstract piece of art. Karen will work on an 18 x24 canvas. SUPPLIES: large canvas, can be an old painting on canvas as it will be collaged over, heavy matte medium, a brayer, old brush for glue, wax paper and some writing tools such as permanent black marker, permanent white marker, pen and ink, sepia colored pen or inks, scissors or paper cutter, ruler, box cutter. If you did not attend Part I, you may buy a packet of papers from Karen for $10. March 17 th : Outdoor Tapestry We will be doing a painting on a large sheet of watercolor paper and turning it into a tapestry that you will be able to hang outside in a protected area. Karen will help you create, step by step, a joyful and expressive painting. Then she will show you how to turn it into an outdoor piece. Supplies: full sheet of 300# watercolor paper, professional acrylic paints, (since this may hang outside, no student grade paints please), Brushes for painting and one wide 4 or 5 brush for applying the minwax, 45 of neutral macramé cording or any other cording that will hold up well to the weather, and a small can of Minwax water based polycrylic clear semi gloss, wax paper and paper towels. April: 21 st Easter Weekend no class May 19 th : Fanciful Houses all in a Row. Come paint a row of houses like you could never paint in a normal neighborhood. These very personal homes will say so much about you. It can t be explained, you ll just have to come see for yourself. Supplies: 10 x20 canvas or 12 x24 canvas, acrylic paints and brushes including a small liner, Micron pen size 03. You may possibly like to try some watercolor pencils or fine markers or acrylic ink and pen.
