Background and History With no experience in the lumber and building materials industry, a used lumber truck, $4,000, and an idea there was a need for another lumberyard in Hyannis, Tony Shepley and a partner started Shepley Wood Products in 1978. At that time, the idea of an upstart lumberyard competing with the six established competitors in a 10-mile radius was preposterous enough that the other yards didn t take it very seriously. Today, Shepley is the only lumberyard remaining in the Hyannis area. The name Wood Products was a conscious effort to make the company sound different than a regular lumberyard. From day one, the aim of the company was to serve contractors. What Shepley had to offer was service. This company was built on taking good care of customers and accommodating their needs better than the competition. Early strategies included making deliveries within 4 hours, developing an interior trim expertise that is exceptional in the industry, pioneering the concept of primed pine through an in-house painting operation, and developing inside sales teams to support the outside sales force. As Shepley has grown, the company has continued to innovate by adding an architectural finish hardware department, a service department and a state of the art Eagle and Andersen window showcase. We want to be the Company that does it right and the Company people want to buy from and work for. Community Service Shepley s commitment to doing the right thing extends into our philanthropic giving. In addition to being the largest contributor to the Cape & Islands United Way, we have many employees who make it a personal priority to be involved in our community. We volunteer our time and resources to local and global charities. In 1996, we hosted our first charitable golf tournament The Shepley Wide Open. This has become an annual event, raising over $300,000 in its lifetime for organizations that are dear to all of us on the Cape and Islands. Paying our civic rent I view [civic rent] as a social obligation that we should pay back to our community both personally and professionally. Paying our civic rent is how we maintain our society and our quality of life by investing in the repairs, maintenance and the building up of the social systems around us. Tony Shepley, President & Owner Tony Shepley will tell you, as a kid he was always one to find the limits of a situation. After graduating from high school he took a job in the corporate world with John Hancock Life Insurance. After a year, and finding he wasn t cut from the corporate cloth, he moved to Cape Cod and joined a rock & roll band. The band played various venues around the sand bar. The financial rewards were good, but Tony was looking for something steadier. At age 25, Tony and a friend saw an opportunity in the lumber business. They acquired an old truck, had limited cash and a great idea to sell service and attitude above all else. Ten years later, Tony bought out his partner and continued to grow Shepley Wood Products into the company it is today. Currently, Shepley services Cape Cod, Southeastern Massachusetts, Nantucket and Martha s Vineyard, and has become a leader in the building materials supply sector. Shepley Media Kit 2010 3 of 6
Tony is a respected member of the Southeastern Massachusetts business community. He was the first company owner in the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association (NRLA) to receive the Certified Building Materials Specialist (CBMS) certification. The CBMS program is the only national accreditation program of its kind for the building material industry. The CBMS program combines a unique mix of comprehensive product and sales training with hands-on industry experience. With a current Class A unlimited CDL and Hoisting License, Tony remains fully involved in the operations of the company. It s not uncommon to see him making deliveries around the Cape and trekking up to Maine with a trailer truck full of lumber on weekends. This back to roots philosophy is one of the distinguishing factors that contribute to the success of Shepley. His hands-on, open door approach to business breeds loyalty among employees and customers alike. Tony resides in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts and Bethel, Maine with his wife Lorraine and their two sons.
