11/11/10 8:20 AM Books are definitely better than TV any day of the week. There are a number of reasons why this might be the case, and I will go through several of them in this essay. You need to ensure that you are reading books instead of watching TV for the following reasons: that it promotes imagination, is essential for good literacy learning, and books can offer a great deal more detail than any movie ever could. Have you ever sat in front of the television for a couple of hours and felt like you have a headache? Have you felt that familiar feeling that you let several hours of your life slip away without accomplishing anything? This is the feeling that you get when you waste time by watching television instead of bettering yourself through reading. Books give you the interactive experience that you long for when you are wasting time with television. When you read a book, the characters and settings are not laid out
for you already. When you watch a film or a television program, you are locked into the director s view of how the setting should look, or the characters should appear. When you read, this is not the case. You use your imagination to create those characters in your mind. This mind exercise is good for your brain. Statistics show that people only use about 10% of their mind while watching. While you are reading, you are using far more of your brain capacity. Your brain will turn to mush if you continue to waste time with television! You will be unable to function in society without being able to read. This is a fact! Don t let this happen to you The next time you pick up a book, smile to yourself as you know that you are making yourself a better reader by improving your vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, writing techniques, reading rate, comprehension and ability to structure your own writing.
You must have these skills, or you will not be able to function in our society. All around us every day we are exposed to writing. You need to be able to comprehend or understand what you read, and this comprehension only comes from reading books often. In schools, it has been proven using stats provided by NAPLAN data that students who are successful in literacy go on to careers that have lots of opportunity for advancement and make lots of money. This is no joke! You need to be able to read effectively to function in our society! This only comes from reading books often, not from watching TV. If we start talking about value for money, there is no doubt that you can stretch you dollar further by purchasing books for your entertainment, as opposed to cashing out thousands of dollars for what needs to be the latest and greatest technology just to view digital television. And just as you think you have a tv that will
take you the distance, up comes the latest technology like 3D that will ensure that you go out and purchase another big new tv. Don t spend that ridiculous amount of money on something as wasteful as a tv. Instead, go down to your local bookshops and for just $10 pick up a great story that will be available to you on your bookshelf for years to come. Imagine sharing a beloved story with a son or daughter someday, just the way that you enjoyed it the first time around. There is a reason why movies are made from books and not the other way around It can t be done! Books have detailed story lines and take ages to develop, while movies are over and done with in 2 hours tops. Just think about the comfortable, cosy, corner where you curl up to read a book. This just isn t possible with the television, because you have to be in the room with the tv. With a book, when you find that cosy spot, all you need is the book in your hand.
So it can be seen that books are far superior to tv in many ways. There is no educational merit to tv when compared to books, there is no creative engagement, and there is simply no matching value for money when it comes to an engaging story that a book can provide you.
