There will be a heavy emphasis in classic pen and ink techniques, such as stippling and line work but I will provide many other mediums to add color and explore. PASTELS Painting with Pastels ELLEN ROTTSOLK MONDAY MORNINGS (9:30 12 NOON) Spend a morning playing with color and studying highlights and shadows. Soft pastels provide an immediacy and purity of color that encourages such exploration. New advances in the medium, plus improved painting surfaces and better ways to frame and protect your finished pastel paintings are the focus of this pastel class. Working with professional artist grade soft pastels, and/or high grade oil pastels make painting in pastel more desirable for the pastel artist and the collector. Be sure to follow the supply list for this class. Not all pastels will work for these techniques. This is a class for all skill levels. The immediacy of pastels application and its forgiving nature makes it a great medium for creating luminous, spontaneous and atmospheric paintings. Knowing how to draw is not required. b.i.a. Nov. 4, 11, 18, December 2, 9, 16 WATERCOLOR Beginning Watercolor KAY WAHLGREN MONDAY MORNINGS (9:30 12 NOON) Watercolor does not have to be muddy or mysterious. The basics will be covered, from setting up the paint box to painting techniques. This class is both for beginners and the continuing student who wants to review and strengthen basic skills. We will concentrate on composition, initial drawings and creativity. We will paint only what you enjoy and are excited about. I will supply reference material if necessary, but suggest you bring your own photos to work from. Really don't want references from commercial materials. We will work on letting the paints mix on paper. We may even paint a still life or go wild and attempt abstract. This will be a relaxed class, fun and exciting; just what the medium of watercolor should be. b..i.a. FL BRUC 2 A. Sept. 16, 23, 30 October 7, 14, 21 B. Nov. 11, 18, Dec. 2, 9, 16 Note: Late Start 5 week session $ prorated Wet Into- Wet Watercolors GORDON FRANCE FRIDAY MORNINGS (9:30-12 NOON) Get rid of the mud and fussy detail. Learn wet-into-wet watercolor technique to take advantage of the medium s unique properties. The class will focus on producing loose, fresh, spontaneous paintings by letting the magic of watercolors work for you. Contrast, color, composition and edge variety will be emphasized. There will be a demo by the instructor, then, during student painting, plenty of personal attention will be available. A positive critique will complete the class. ADULT WORKSHOPS Zentangle - Sue Jacobs, Certified Zentangle Instructor $70 Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from structured patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity. Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being. Certified Zentangle Teacher Sue Jacobs will show us how it s done. All materials will be provided; additional supplies may be purchased. The first week will be Zentangle Foundations, In this class you will learn the theory and basics of Zentangle. You will learn at least 8 official tangle patterns and create 2 of your own unique pieces of Zentangle art. Second week topics will be Tangling on black and tan tiles - additional tangles and theories of shading and highlighting. W FL JACO 1 Wed., Sept. 21 1:00 3:30 Wed., Sept. 28 1:00 3:30 Fibre for Painters $45 Add a third dimension & exciting texture to your watercolor, acrylic or pastel painting using the simple technique of needle felting with wool. This fiber is easily shaped from fine lines to broad swaths & colors & can be mixed & layered. You'll begin by planning a simple landscape, still life, figure or abstract composition, then paint a background on fabric & finally have fun completing the piece with needle felting. Fabric, fiber & all necessary supplies & equipment for felting will be provided. Participants will need to bring their chosen supplies for underpainting, a small sketchbook, a roll of paper towels (water media), a piece of pipe insulation (pastel) & photo references. REGISTRATION & PAYMENT Full payment is due at the time of registration prior to the first class. No class registrations may be accepted without payment. Refunds are never issued for missed classes. Missed classes may be made up in other classes and times taught by the same teacher at the discretion of the instructor. Students whose schedules will cause them to miss a significant number of classes in a session, may buy single classes at $20 each on the day of the class if the class is not full and the instructor approves. REFUND POLICY & CANCELLATIONS: Refunds will be made only if cancellation is made 5 days prior to the first class. There will be a $5 charge for processing a refund. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be canceled. All refunds will be handled through the mail. The DPAL reserves the right to change dates, cancel, postpone, split, or combine classes. TRANSFERRING CLASSES: Class registrations cannot be transferred from one class to another. Students may cancel a class, ask for a refund (if 5 days before or more before the class begins), and then select and pay for another class to replace it. There will be a $5 processing fee for refund requests. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Class fees can be waived upon presentation of evidence of financial need. The DPAL offers a $5 discount on class fees to Senior Citizens (62 years and over). Call for further information. For regular desk staffers and board members, a 50% discount for one class per quarter. This discount does not apply to workshops. SCHOLARSHIPS: Application forms are available at the DPAL front desk.
