It is meant to: See the example below: While the example above demonstrates the information you need to include in the section, there are various ways to format it. Check out the cover letter templates below to get more ideas on how you can structure this section. RG Tip No spelling or grammar errors! This one really goes without saying. Spelling mistakes make an awful first impression. You can easily avoid this problem by doing your research. Introduce yourself In the first paragraph, begin by telling the employer the position you are applying for and how you learned about the opportunity. The rest of this paragraph should briefly present basic info about yourself, including: Sell Yourself The second paragraph should respond directly to the job description written by the hiring manager. To make that easier, you can and should literally include words and phrases from the job description in your cover letters. RG Tip No bombast! To go the extra mile, do some research about the company, and try to find out what they are doing â and why â given the current state of their industry. In a third paragraph, explain how you can fit into that schema, and help push the company forward and achieve any goals you suspect they may have. Thank them for spending the time to read your letter. Here are a few quick tips when styling your own: If you are having trouble fitting everything on one page, there is some wiggle room, but be careful not to make the content look crammed together. Anything below 12 can strain the eyes. Font style is really a matter of preference. Try to choose one that looks professional or that matches what the employer uses on their website. Keep in mind that different styles will change the size of the font. Maintain a uniform alignment throughout. We suggest keeping all paragraphs left-aligned. Applicant tracking systems are mostly designed to read through resumes, sifting through keywords and key-phrases to statistically determine whether to let you through to the next stage. You might as well be completely prepared. Does anyone read cover letters? Yes, someone will read it. Will they read it carefully? It depends on the hiring manager. As you already knew or maybe not, the first thing hiring manager see, when reading your resume is a cover letter! What is a Cover Letter? Why do you need that how it could help you? A Cover Letter is a document, which is an additional document to your resume. It shows your skills and overwrites your experience. The letter provides detailed information on why you are qualified for the job you are applying for. Think of your cover letter as a sales pitch that will market your credentials and help you get the interview. As such, you want to make sure your cover letter makes the best impression on the person who is reviewing it. The most common mistake most candidates does â they simply copy their career objective statement and paste that information to their cover letter. You should not do that, because you do not add any additional value. Instead of doing that, there are too many other ways on how professionally written cover letter could bring more value to your reader. Types of Cover Letters There are three most common types of cover letters, which could be useful for you, based on what kind of request do you have. Responding Application Letter â this letter should be used if you would like to clarify some information about open job posting. Because in your case, you would need to use the first one type from the list above. Your cover letter is document, where you tell your reader a bit more about who you are, what skills do you have and what experience. Do not copy all that stuff from your resume, just simply tell them on how useful you could be for their company and show your desire to be the part of their team. Cover Letter â What to exclude? You should understand that your cover letter is an additional document to your resume, which you already sent for a consideration, That means, that you need to be care about what information to include to your cover letter or not. There are some rules, which are better to follow. And one of such rule is â to exclude all personal information from your cover letter. Cover letter structure Before you will start writing your first or maybe not first cover letter, you need to know a document structure. Why do you need that? Because it would help you to structure your document and it would help your reader to read it without any troubles. So, if you have already started writing, please read and follow these rules below. Chapter 3 : How to Write a Great Cover Letter Step-by-Step Resume Genius Tips for better email cover letters: If you're emailing a resume, your cover letter will deliver the first impression. These eight tips will help you craft a better email cover letter. These eight tips will help you craft a better email cover letter. Cover Letters Cover Letter means What? Resume cover letter is an important part of a professional communication. It creates a possibility of your resume being read by its recipients. It lays out the necessary and relevant information pertaining to your credentials. If written with interest, energy, creativity and focusing on certain aspects to the job, the recruiters get an overall picture of your personality in general. While writing, just think of any descriptive essay wherein you are describing about qualities of a place, a person of or thing. Of course, here the details will be relating to what you did in the past and are currently doing. A Better Start is Needed Before you start writing the letter, you must first draft a resume. As you keep adding experience in your field, you must update the resume. If you are a discerning person and have added latest skills, it would be easy for highlighting your profile. While the resume is a hard and clear fact about your qualification, experience and personal details, giving it an identify and strong support is done by the cover letter. About Cover Letter Template The resume letter must follow a professional template. Since it is a professional document, attention must be paid towards the formatting of the letter. If you are not a good typesetter, you can research and go through various samples to have a feel of it. The samples should be taken in only for reference purposes and not copying them. Because you are not the only one who is sending the job application, the recruiters must have already reviewed hundreds of applications. Therefore, when selecting the template, see that you pick the most present one and modify it according to your discretion. This will serve as an example of your creativity and knowledge of current trends. Creative Writing Matters a lot! However, in order to be creative or different from others, you must not go overboard and draft a fancy and colorful cover letter. Keep the font and font-sizes consistent throughout the letter. There is also no need to go on making any text in bold, except your name in case you are drafting it in a letter-head format. There are some writers who just make the cover letter a summary of the resume. Avoid repeating this mistake. You are not writing any review of your resume. The recruiters have all the knowledge to understand what you have stated in it. This practice may even upset and spoil the chance of meeting with the interviewer. Purpose for Writing Remember, the purpose of writing resume cover letter should vary. For example, you may need to write it in order to respond to a job advertisement you are seeking, make an inquiry about the possible opening, or to seek assistance in job search from people working in your field. For all these purposes, the one thing that would be common is your introduction and reason for writing. Supposing you are sending the letter for a job advertisement, then you must let the employer know where and when have you read the advertisement and for which position. Then, you can proceed with introducing yourself and highlighting your credentials for the available position. When it is written for an inquiry of job opening, the start will be little different. In this case, the readers must be able to understand that it is an unsolicited letter, and the candidate is interested in a particular position within their organization. As it is also a sales letter, the letter should convince the readers that you will be of great help to them if giving an opportunity. In case there is no present opening, they would keep your letter and resume and remember to call you as and when any opening arises. The cover letter for seeking assistance from people in a similar field would be different than other two reasons of writing. Here, your introduction has to be impressive so that the addressee would be ready to recommend you to the employers or forward information about you seeking the job. Here are some of the generic sample cover letters, which you may need from the time you apply for the job, to the time you get it. Page 4

Chapter 4 : 45+ Free Cover Letter Examples By Industry Resume Companion You can use your cover letter to go into detail about something in your resume that needs explaining. For example, a cover letter is a great place to talk about a career shift, a career break, or to explain an extended gap in employment. I am a PMP certified technical project manager with over 5 years of experience managing IT projects, as well as 4 years as a lead web developer. I am confident that my unique combination of experiences make me the ideal candidate for the job. Over the past 5 years at Dolphin Software Solutions, I have used my advanced expertise with Agile methodologies and project management software to ensure the efficient and cost-effective completion of over 40 projects. In addition, my intimate familiarity with web development enables me to effectively communicate with and understand the needs of developers. I heard on the news that AeonIT is increasing its efforts to expand globally. I would be more than thrilled for the opportunity to provide similar results at AeonIT. I would love to come in for an interview to further discuss how my unique experiences and long track record of successful project management can benefit AeonIT. Thank you for taking the time to look over my application, and I hope to hear from you soon. Five Expert Writing Tips 1. Make Use of the Job Description If the job description specifically mentions any particular skills that you possess, make sure to emphasize them in your cover letter. In addition, demonstrate how you can use those skills to benefit your target company. Take a look at the following job description from LinkedIn: Now look at how the candidate addressed this in their cover letter: Notice how the candidate not only mentions that they have a required skill for the job, but also demonstrates how they used that ability to yield results. Mention Your Experience in the Field Project managers work in a wide-variety of professional fields, such as IT, construction, and energy etc. Showcasing you have experience or knowledge in the specific field of your target company can sometimes sway the hiring manager even more effectively than your project management abilities. Emphasize how your combination of experiences makes you an asset to the company. For example, our sample candidate mentions that they have experience both as a PM and as a web developer â they then further emphasize how that combination of experiences will make them an asset to the company. Do this by demonstrating your knowledge of management methodologies, software, and your success completing projects. Here the candidate elaborates on the nature of their communication skills. Specifically, they mention their ability to communicate with the developers in their team. Many projects fail due to poor communication between departments. As such, any project manager who can prove they have effective communication skills is going to have an instant advantage over other candidates. Make it so in your cover letter. Research the company beforehand and familiarize yourself with their products and practices. Try to find something your target company is doing where your skillset makes you an asset, and then tell them exactly what you could do to help achieve their goals if you were an employee! And the most effective way to display those results is with numbers. Quantifying the results of your actions at previous companies will clearly and effectively communicate your abilities to the hiring manager. As such, every time you have the opportunity to include numbers â do it. Take at look at how much the candidate quantified in their cover letter: Adding specific numbers to your cover letter makes your accomplishments seem more impressive, and effectively communicates the extent of your abilities to the hiring manager. Both of which will compel the hiring manager to turn the page and check out your resume. Having a great cover letter is only one half of the equation. Having a great resume will give you the full package. Remember that your project management cover letter is the first thing the hiring manager will see. Following these tips will ensure that your first impression is a good one. If that seems like too much work, our professional cover letter builder can get it all done for you in minutes!
