Building Your Professional Presence Online

An online presence is any existence of an individual that can be found via an online search. What is your online presence? 1

Your online presence is how you re judged on the internet it is your reputation. Are you comfortable with yours? Why is it important? 2

35% of colleges are viewing social media profiles for admissions 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates You will NEED a résumé. Fact. The Big WHY. 3

A résumé is a written compilation of your education, experience, credentials, and accomplishments. What is a résumé? 4

STEM Premier allows you to build your digital résumé. It becomes your professional online presence. Introducing the Digital Résumé 5

Joining STEM Premier is easy and totally free. The first step is to register your account. Go to: app.stempremier.com/register Getting Started 6

The Welcome Flow The welcome flow is a step-by-step process that helps you build the foundation for your profile. Profile Picture Current Education Next Steps College Interests Career Interests Demographics Communication Preferences First Things First Entering this information enables you to choose a focus so that the rest of your profile can mirror your goals and next steps. 7

The first impression Make sure that your profile picture fits the following criteria: Professional-looking Quality image that s not blurry No Snapchat filters Appropriately dressed Profile Picture Having a profile picture literally puts your best face forward. Colleges or businesses are able to associate you with a positive image. 8

Add your school Follow these simple steps to add your current school of attendance: Type in full name of school Make sure address of school is correct Select school from the list Enter graduation year Education Having your school on your profile lets you add courses that you re taking and also brings you local opportunities and events. 9

What s your dream? A Next Step Badge is a visual indicator of what route you plan to take next. Select one of the badges that best represents your current plans Badges can be changed at any time Badges don t limit opportunities Next Steps Next Step Badges are searchable by colleges and companies, making it easier for them to target you with opportunities. 10

2-Year? 4-Year? Indicating interest in a college provides them with the ability to reach out to you on the platform. Choose as many as you wish You can choose both 2-year or 4-year schools, no matter which Next Step Badge you picked You can share info to be contacted outside of STEM Premier Make sure to type in the full name of the school College Interest Colleges can contact you with information, events, and maybe even scholarships. 11

I want to be Choose all career paths and fields that you re interested in. Start with the general field of study Next, choose the industry Then, specify what position you d like Career Interest Companies and colleges will contact you about job opportunities, internships, and apprenticeships based on what you put in this field. 12

Making a match Fill out the criteria in a way that best represents you. This information can always be altered None of this information is outsourced or shared The majority of this information will be used to benefit you with opportunities and involvement Demographics Demographics will benefit you in the scholarshipmatcher, Red Kite, which is available on your dashboard. 13

Be discovered Provide your cell phone number for alternative means of contact This is optional - you don t have to! Only STEM Premier will utilize this information Your number will not be given out to other parties, even ones on this platform Communication STEM Premier is all about opportunities coming to you, so filling out alternative contacts means you won t miss out on anything! 14

Let s keep going Don t be fooled - once the welcome flow is over, there s still more you can do! Coursework Videos Test Scores Files & Projects Credentials Associations Activities Great start! Filling out your profile is the most important thing to do - because not only will it translate to plentiful opportunities, but also it can help you make an instant résumé! 15

Making the grade Enter in your GPA and highlight courses that you re proud of or are relevant to your future field. Don t worry about numbers; all grades and GPA s don t mean the same for each job or college Focus on the courses you care about Don t just list STEM courses: all disciplines matter! Coursework Colleges will see your full transcripts eventually. Listing courses that are relevant or some of your best work gives your profile a positive focus. 16

Really show your talent Both Interview and Extracurricular style videos can shoot you straight to the top! Talk about your interests and passions Explain what drives you and why Feature any cinematic projects Show activities aside from academics - sports, band, robotics, theatre, etc. Videos It s one thing to be able to say you do something, but it s entirely different to be able to show it! 17

Your measurables Get your standardized test scores to work for you. Enter scores from tests such as: ACT SAT PSAT ASFAB ACT WorkKeys AP PLTW end of course assessments Test scores Quick Tip: No test scores yet? No problem. If you haven t taken any of these tests yet, simply focus on filling out the rest of your profile and update as you pass those milestones. 18

Organize your portfolio Upload examples of your best work from our computer, Dropbox or Google Drive, such as: Essays, writing journals, stories Engineering projects Art/design portfolios Blueprints or templates Science projects Official transcripts Certificates & Awards Files & projects STEM Premier isn t just for STEM students. Give examples of your work to show exactly what you can do, no matter what discipline. 19

Are you qualified? Here are some example certifications/licenses: CPR Certified OSHA Certification Microsoft Office Certification AutoCAD Certified Commercial Driving License (CDL) AWS Certified Welder Credentials A large number of companies look for licensures and certifications, as they show that you re qualified in the specific skills they need for their opportunities. 20

Show your involvement An association is a group that usually functions on a larger level outside of one school. Some examples are: National Honors Society Key Club BETA Club DECA First Robotics Gay/Straight Alliance Associations Colleges and companies love to see involvement in outside organizations - it means you can network, help, and be a part of a community. 21

Shine in the spotlight Accomplishments can be an award, title, or distinction in or outside of school. Here s some examples: Placing in an fair or competition Having a solo in band, theatre, or choir (even church choir!) Being a team captain or other leadership role Winning an athletic award or championship Recognition by your school or church Accomplishments Providing examples of how you are unique or different helps you stand out from the rest. 22

Extracurriculars Think of the things that you do out in the community, whether it s a participation activity or a volunteer project. Anything counts, even the following: Angel Tree or Toys for Tots Volunteer day at soup kitchen Team or organized sport Environmental clean-up Band, community theatre, choir Youth group or church involvement Extra-Involved Showing that you can play well with or care about others is a character trait that many organizations, businesses, and colleges want to see. 23

Experience matters Experience isn t just a job with a paycheck. Check out examples of relevant experience that colleges and companies consider important: Babysitting (even for siblings!) Internship - paid or unpaid Shadowing experience Mowing lawns or yard work Attendance at a conference or seminar Work it! Experience directly relates to soft skills such as responsibility or punctuality, which colleges and companies desperately want! 24

Get professional Always make sure that you re looking over your work to make sure there aren t any mistakes. For example: Is your spelling correct? Did you capitalize when needed (your name, beginning of sentences, etc.)? Do your links work? Are you using complete sentences? Did you verify your email? Some things to double-check An accurate and grammatically correct profile shows that you pay attention to detail and can operate in a professional or higher educational setting. 25
