Blues Turarouds Blues Soloig Masterclass Week 1 Steve Stie A Blues Turaroud is a musical figure played over the I ad V chords i the last two bars, settig up the form to repeat. I case you're ot familiar, roma umerals are ofte used to represet the chords whe we're talkig music theory. I our example i the key of A, this meas A- D (with some facier voicigs from Steve). There are may differet kids of turarouds but this is the classic. *Last bars* *Turaroud* - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - l E(#) D( ˆˆ1) A E(#) + + + + Turaroud #1 The first turaroud ivolves the classic combiatio of chromatic movemet up ad dow at the same time. O the guitar we ca achieve this effect quite easily with hybrid pickig. A b j E(#) # To put it ito cotext, here is the last four bars of a ormal 1-Bar Blues i A with our first turaroud. Aother thig to do with these two-strig turarouds is to pick the otes idividually istead of together. A b Ó Or you ca ivert the pickig order ad start with the d strig. Do't forget about our idea of morphig. There is always more tha oe way to approach a lick ad you're oly limited by your creativity. A b Ó Turaroud # The secod turaroud actually ivolves the same otes but ow we're ivertig them so that the upwards-movig chromatic lie is ow o the bottom, ad vice-versa. It's a bit of a stretch ad be sure to watch Steve for the figerig. This fits ito the blues form exactly as the last lick ad you ca also pick the strigs idividually i the same maer as the previous turaroud. A Turaroud # A b E(#) Here is aother classic turaroud followig the same idea but ow we're have a static ote, the A o the th strig. We move the th strig chromatically like before, but that A stays put. All techiques such as hybrid pickig ad pluckig the strigs idividually apply just as i the previous two examples. Check out the ew V chord Steve is usig as well. j E(#) j b # GuitarZoom 1
Turaroud # ust like the previous turarouds, we ca ivert the otes ad put our chromatic movemet o top istead of o the bottom. It's aother big stretch but your piky should be able to grab those otes. A F E b # 1 1 11 11 1 1 Notice how i the last example Steve spices up that V chord by slidig ito it from a half-step above. Here are some more ways you ca make that V chord shie with chromatic movemet followig our turaroud figures. E E D E E b # # b # Turaroud # Here's a differet turaroud although it still depeds o chromatic movemet. As with the other examples, we ca strum this, hybrid pick it, or pick the strigs idividually. A A # b # E(#) For this turaroud you ca also add a ote i betwee the first two to make a chord. This particular turaroud probably is probably best strummed, but as always play aroud with it yourself ad see what you ca morph it ito. Try playig these as triplets as well as swug th otes. b # E(#) # # GuitarZoom 1
Turaroud # Turaroud # has aother static ote coupled with chromatic movemet. It has a ice dissoat soud because the first two otes are oly a whole-step apart from each other. Do't forget to cotiue tryig all of our differet techiques such as hybrid pickig, strummig, etc, o each lick. Most of us have heard the blues so much that our ears have come to expect these kids of chromatic souds i the turaroud. You certaily do't eed to, ad probably should't, play differet turaroud figures every time you play but kow a few good oes is essetial for your playig. A Turaroud # A E(#) Here's a iterestig turaroud that ivolves a two-strig descedig patter mixed with a static ote, the A o the 1st strig. You'll have to use hybrid pickig i order to play everythig clealy. b # Ó You ca also double-hybrid pick this patter which simply meas playig the th strig with your pick ad usig your d ad rd figers to pluck the 1st ad d strigs. That might be difficult at first if you're ot used to figerstyle playig but it's a great techique to develop. A b Ó You ca do the exact same thig o the th, rd ad d strigs as well. A b Ó 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 GuitarZoom 1
Turaroud # Turaroud # is the same thig but reversed. Now we start o the d fret ad move our way up to the th fret. A b Ó Ad we ca separate the A o the first strig just like we did before. Of course do't forget to go to the V chord afterwards! A b # E(#) # Turaroud # The last turaroud is a bit differet from all the others because it starts o the first beat of the measure. This time we're also utilisig the ope E strig as we walk our other otes dow the th strig. A j E(#) # Sice this oe is a bit differet, let's play it oe more time i cotext with the last four bars of our Blues form. E D A E(#) 11 11 11 11 j # GuitarZoom 1
