Iowa Quilter s Guild Newsle er April 2017 Vol. 38 No. 2 Special Mailing GREETINGS FROM OUR PROGRAM CHAIR We had such a good me at retreat last weekend, and loved the facility! I was able to talk to the person in charge of registra ons today, and of the two dates we wanted for next year, only one was open. So, you can put April 27 29 on your calendars for retreat in 2018 at the Chris an Conference Center in Newton. We are a li le over 3 months out from our big event with Rita Hutchens in Jefferson on July 14 & 15, 2017. We need to fill these classes or the guild will lose a lot of money, so I plead with you to take the classes! They are both technique classes so you are only going to learn ways to make all your projects easier with special ways to make triangles, squares on point, and Flying Geese. Please check out Rita s website for a peek at her inspiring quilts, and come Friday night to see them in person at her lecture! Class lists for both classes are on her website. I am going to leave registra on open to only IQG members un l April 15, and a er that I will open it up to any quilters. Please pass along the enclosed form to your quilt guild members and let s fill the classes! Iowa Quilter s Guild Newsle er April 2017 Vol. 38 No. 2 Special Mailing Friday, July 14, 2017 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Totally Tubular Triangles Magic bias friendly tube strip piecing technique and simple formula makes long rows of triangles any angle or size, including miniature, without paper, templates, or waste. It is easier than it looks. Rita encourages you to tweak your brain and think in new ways about imagining and creating patterns from triangles. Lots of information, eye candy and unique ideas for using these triangles to create borders, blocks, and components for quilts will be provided. Workshop Fee $60.00 (non-refundable) Supply list on her website, www.ritahutchens.com Summer Event-July 14 th & 15 th 2017 Cobblestone Hotel and Suites-Jefferson, Iowa Our teacher and lecturer is Rita Hutchens from Sandpoint, Idaho. Rita is an expert at imagining colorful patterns and exploring the endless design and construction options available by using strips sewn into tubes. Tubular Strip Piecing is a totally out of the box way to think about and strip piece patterns. It is a cross between Seminole and Bargello, with a unique twist. It is done without paper, templates, waste or problems with the bias and can be combined with a number of different cutting techniques for creating Wedge, Kaleidoscopes, and Mirror Image patterns. Friday, July 14, 2017 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Rita Hutchens Lecture, Slides and Trunk Show A Totally Tubular Journey Through Color and Pattern Follow Rita s 30 year Journey in quilting, which includes the discovery of her Totally Tubular method of strip-piecing and where its roots come from. Rita will show hundreds of possibilities, patterns and quilts she has made using this technique and spark your creativity to a new way of thinking about pattern. Part of the presentation will include a series of animated illustrations on how to make a variety of patterns using the 3-D Totally Tubular method. Be prepared for lots of eye candy. Lecture Fee $5.00 members, $10 non-members Saturday, July 15, 2017 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Strip Piecing Magic: Squares on Point and Flying Geese Make Squares-on-Point any size, including miniatures, without paper, templates, waste or problems with bias. Then use a rotary cutter like a magic wand and turn the squares into Flying Geese. Combine rows of geese to make a variety of unique patterns to use for borders, blocks, quilts, and garments. Tubular Strip Piecing method is a cross between Seminole and Bargello. Samples and eye candy will spark your creativity into using this old favorite in new ways. Process oriented class.
