Synopsis o Empirical qualitative research to study companies practices of knowledge and IP management in customer supplier relationships. o 36 firms in Finland & the Netherlands with innovation relationship with supplier and customers were studied. o Paper advised 3 proposition from the perspectives of exploration and exploitation to better manage IP and knowledge management in customer-supplier relationship.
Introduction o New business and innovation development gradually require external collaboration. o Firms seeking collaborative partners in upward & downward direction of value chain. o In knowledge based economy, during relationship, knowledge and IP management is crucial. o Varied relationship forms make it difficult to standardize the practices.
Inter-organizational Innovation Frameworks o Various authors proposed different forms of inter-organizational innovation collaborations: o Co-development Open Innovation and revenue sharing depends on business model of participating firms. Knowledge & IP Management o Collaborative relationship is better than IP rights alone, since it includes the flow of tacit portion of knowledge as well. o Formal contracts, non disclosure agreements, and trust management in partnerships are actively used methods for knowledge safety. o Management of post partnership innovation outcome is challenging and can be managed by open communication and information sharing.

Exploitation of Innovation Outcome o Knowledge transaction associations provide various frameworks for using current IP. o In circumstances where business models of both customer and supplier do not support use of innovation outcome, a new business model can be employed for a win-win. o This typology offers usual contractual basics for the development of business model.
Conclusion o Diverse practices are evolving in context of innovation associations. o IP regulations encourage single party innovation over joint innovation, leads to difficulties in IP management in innovation partnerships. o This study add 3 propositions in existing literature.
