OUTLINE Scientific challenges Sustainability Integrated assessment DPSIR philosophy Facilitating cooperation CIENS UiO SINCIERE Vision and Goals
Sustainability Requires Integrated scientific approach Environment is preserved for the future in the green circle. Social harmony is emphasized in the red circle; Production is economically efficient in the blue circle; ECONOMIC PRODUCTION Needs for environmental protection are balanced against limitation posed by social harmony and economic production ENVIRON- MENTAL PROTECTION SUS- TAIN- ABILITY SOCIAL HARMONY Sustainability implies positive solutions for all components.
21st century: Research for sustainability Challenges Integrated assessment Combining Social-, Economic- and Natural science Science-policy interactions Relate to Uncertainties and understanding of limited applicability Stakeholder involvement Transition to sustainability is a circular process Legislation needs to be developed as new knowledge is acquired
The DPSIR-philosophy Conceptual framework Drivers: actions for economic production to reach short-term term social goals Pressures: side-effects of the drivers State: the conditions of an environmental system changes due to the pressures Impacts: immediate consequences for ecosystems, life, and values Nature s Response: long-term ecosystem adaptation to impacts, with feed-backs Society s Response: long-term human adaptation and mitigation to impacts and nature s response, with feed-backs.
Need to facilitate cooperation Social, economic and nature scientists do not usually socialize We need to generate breeding ground for interdisciplinary projects Meeting point Think tanks Workshops

Goals and Objectives CIENS shall stimulate and develop joint activities between natural and social sciences and between applied research institutes and the University of Oslo Natural Sciences Applied Research Basic Science Social Sciences CIENS shall produce knowledge, education and innovation as a basis for decisions for sustainable development
SINCIERE Sino-Norwegian Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental Research Bilateral agreement between CAS/RCEES and CIENS/UiO Proposed during the meeting between CAS and UiO, lead by their university president, in Beijing, September 2005. Initiation funded through CAS, UiO and the BILAT program of The Research council of Norway

Impetus Enable Chinese decision makers to establish efficient abatement strategies Environmental change needs to be analyzed in the context of the social, political and economic setting of contemporary China To obtain this knowledge, integrated assessment studies of the ways pollution, climate change, and inadequate resource management affect the environment and humans are required.
Our SINCIERE Vision: To act as a catalyst and mediator for cooperation between China and Norway within the field of environmental research. - Facilitate interdisciplinary and policy relevant research and serve as a node for a broad network of associated institutions.
Purpose to facilitate sustainable development Integrate research networks Through international collaboration national cooperation develops Further development of well established interdisciplinary research networks Strengthen institutional and scientific capacity Provide framework and infrastructure for projects Facilities Increase access to international research funding (EU s 7 th, WB, etc) Arrange workshops for project development Think tanks
Centre Goals Holistic perspective Generate and facilitate research projects that: Conduct Integrated Assessments, taking into account the full range of factors of importance for the impact and mitigation of environmental stressors on a local -, regional -, and global scale Develop novel approaches linking bio-physico-chemical knowledge with economic and social understanding within the field of environmental research in a Chinese context.
