COURSE OUTLINE 1. FUNDEMENTALS OF ELECTRICITY/BASIC ELECTRICITY The course is designed to prepare students with entry level knowledge and manipulative skills for employment in the electrical industry. Electrical Fundamentals & Basic Electricity teaches students everything they need to know about how electricity behaves. Starting from the basic scientific principles, it covers the following topics and related skills: Explain Principles and fundamental concepts of electricity Explain Magnetic Theory. Know definitions, types, properties and applications of conductors, insulators and semi -conductors Explain the basic fundamentals of power generation and distribution. Apply and Explain electrical units and symbols. Explain Concepts, theories and principles of Electrical Circuits Draw and interpret series, parallel and series parallel DC resistive circuits and calculate variables. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS) Occupational health and safety officers are responsible for putting health and safety systems in place in a work environment. This programme is suitable for those who would like to take on the role of occupational health and safety in the work place and learn how to create a proper healthy and safe environment for workers and prevent serious injuries in the work place. Duration 5 days 3. TESTING INSTRUMENTS-THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL The Electrical testing instruments course covers the principles on which electrical test instruments operate. Basic instruments covered in this course include insulation resistance tester (ohmmeter) and multimeter, tong tester, voltage tester(duspol): Demonstrate knowledge of test instruments. Set up electronic instruments. Demonstrate knowledge of measuring techniques. Interpret the results of the readings. Duration: 2 days 4. MV XLPE & PILC CABLES INSTALL, JOINT AND TERMINATE The Cable Jointing and Termination Course is both theoretical and practical. The course will concentrate on the technical data as well as practical aspects of installing, jointing and terminating medium voltage cables. This Cable Jointing and Termination Course will cover the fundamental aspects involved in the correct execution of a termination or joint. Topics such as cable construction, crosslinking, stress control and practical ways in removing semiconductors, Installing, jointing and terminating cables will be brought home and provide you with the applied competence according to the following unit standards: Unit standard 259187 Install and Terminate Medium Voltage Cables (NQF Level 4) Unit standard 259189 Joint Medium Voltage Cables (NQF Level 4) All work is carried out according to Occupational Health and Safety Act. Use and handling of basic hand tools. Use and handling of portable power tools. Use and knowledge of electrical testing instruments. Introduction to industry.
