The new wide ratio zoom DX-NIKKOR lens boasts a focal length range of 16 to 85mm, which makes it ideal for a broad range of shooting situations, including indoor-outdoor events, streetscapes, portraits and scenery. When mounted on any DX-format Nikon digital SLR camera, the picture angle is equivalent to that produced by a 24 to 127.5mm focal length lens on a 35mm film camera. An ultra-compact Silent Wave Motor (SWM) built into the lens body ensures fast, quiet and accurate autofocus operation and complements the compact, lightweight design for superb handling. With dimensions of only Ø72 x 85 mm/ø2.8 x 3.4 in., this new lens is ideal for general photography and perfectly suited for many who specialize in travel and nature photography. Nikon's Vibration Reduction II, specifically engineered for each NIKKOR lens, gives photographers the ability to shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops* slower than would otherwise be possible, thereby minimizing image blur caused by camera shake. This enables dramatically sharper handheld shooting at dusk or at night, or even in poorly lit interiors. And because Nikon s VR function is incorporated in and designed expressly for the lens, it provides state-of-the-art image sharpness capacity and a stable viewfinder image, which makes framing and composing a scene far more comfortable and accurate. *As determined in Nikon performance tests The new high-performance optical system has been optimized for Nikon digital SLRs, with two 02 03

ROMANCING VIETNAM WITH D300 - PART 1 ROMANCING VIETNAM WITH D300 - PART 1 ROMANCING VIETNAM WITH D300 PART 1 Text and Pictures By Steven Yee Pui Chung MBA, B.Eng (Mech), FRPS, FPSS, FPSM, Hon.FPSM, Hon.FKCC, AFIAP Recent years have seen a keen interest among many photographers venturing into Vietnam for photography opportunities. Initially, I thought this was probably due to some tourism promotion gimmicks by some tour agency until I was urged by some of my students to organise a photography trip to Vietnam. I read through a few travel guide books, especially my favourite DK Eye Witness Guide. A trip was thus organised during the Christmas to explore central Vietnam (Danang, Hoi An, My Son, Hue) and then southwards to Ho Chi Minh, Can Tho and My Tho. For the first time in recent years, my usual hardy D2X became my backup camera for this trip while I test the D300 to the limit. I shot about 9000 pictures over a period of 8 days, shooting continuously about 10 frames if the angle is good. The buffer is good. Under the Set Picture Control, I set to D2XMode3 and the colour rendition is similar to what I would expect from the D2X. The camera works very well with my usual set of 18-200mm DX VR, 12-24mm DX and 10.5mm fisheye. The built in flashlight can be conveniently activated as and when needed to fill in light. What amazed me is that the noise level is well controlled when high ISO is used. For me who am using the DX lenses, the D300 will come in handy to continue the legacy left behind by my ageing D2X workhorse which has already clocked for me more than 250,000 shots in my previous travel stints. One of our difficulties faced was the limited ability of the local guide in conversing in English. We had to speak within the simplest means to avoid any miscommunication. Even the pronunciation of the city names left much to be desired. Hoi An can be easily pronounced by us, but Hue, Can Tho, My Son and My Tho are pronounced differently from what we would expect them to be correct. What was embarrassing was when I told the hotel receptionist that our next stop is Can Tho (I pronounced as the usual Canto as in the Canto Pub), she stared at me blankly, only to realise a few days later in Can Tho that it should be pronounced as Kern Therd. My Tho is to be pronounced as Mi Tho, Hue to be pronounced as Huay. Some Tips for travelling: You are not likely to spend more than 2 weeks in the location, hence time is a limiting factor. A good local guide who knows a bit of photography will be good to have as he or she will know when to stop when the bus pass by some interesting subjects or places. It is good to know more about the places you are going to, getting the information from the guide books, internet resources and photography books. In other words, plan what you would like to shoot. Get some reference shots from stock libraries so that you can better prepare yourself what you are in for. Print them and ask your local guide to help you. Shoot more, shortlist everyday and keep a backup set of images in a separate hard disk. Do not eat the food by the roadside (anywhere) until you are localised. It is good to have an extra set of equipment on standby, in case your equipment malfunctions. Bring sufficient medicine, for sore throat, cough, flu etc. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO250, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/1600s, Aperture f5.3, 18-200mm VR set at 112mm focal length The ferry continued to fetch the people and their wares between the shores in Hoi An. This picture is technically challenging as I had to photograph the people against a brighter background. The D300 is able to capture the details of the people well despite the contrast in the lighting. 44 45

ROMANCING PHOTOGRAPHY VIETNAM TIPS WITH D300 - PART 1 ROMANCING VIETNAM WITH D300 - PART 1 Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/3200s, Aperture f4, 18-200mm VR set at 27mm focal length One of the ways to photograph Vietnam s tallest and biggest flag pole in Hue is to shoot with the leaves as frame at the top. Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f4.8, 18-200mm VR set at 52mm focal length Hoi An is also known for its marble. In this marble carving workshop, the workers in action are worth photographing. The white reflective surface of the marble served as a good reflector to brighten the workers clothes. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f5.3, 18-200mm VR set at 105mm focal length The 2 wheels are still a common mean of transport. Many Vietnamese ride on bicycles or motorbikes everyday. The texture on the wall caught my attention and the bird cage complement the bicycle very well. Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO800, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/50s, Aperture f3.5, 18-200mm VR set at 18mm focal length Even if the check in luggage is not big enough to buy bulky souvenirs, no harm photographing the statues. I once told my students, By taking this picture, even if you did not buy any of the statues, you can always print the picture and put on the table top. 46 47

The backlight created the outline of light around the subject s body. A clean background was chosen while I try to ensure that the backlight effect was still possible at where he stood. Communication is important and I needed the help of my local guide in Xinjiang to talk to the old man. We were treated to an eye opening Apsara dance in this simple theatre. The ancient ruins of the temple complexes continue to stand till this day. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO800, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f5.6, 18-200mm VR set at 200mm focal length The streets of Hoi An reveal interesting findings where modernisation has not really set in yet in this ancient port town. This picture was shot through the glass of our spacious tour bus (a 20 seater bus for just 9 of us). We were able to move freely on the bus to shoot through the windows from either sides. Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f5, 18-200mm VR set at 50mm focal length We stayed in La Residence in Hue. I told the bell boy to pose for this picture. This was the former residence of the French governor, situated right beside the famed Perfume River. Legend has it that the princess bride of the ancient Cham King bathed in perfume water and the servants later poured the water into the river. This was how the Perfume River got its name. What was unbelievable was there exist free wireless internet connection in this hotel! 48 49

Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO640, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f4.2, 18-200mm VR set at 34mm focal length A visit to the Thien My Pagoda temple enabled us to encounter the monks for the first time in Vietnam. This monk was deep in thoughts as he walked around the compound. I located this angle and when he walked into the frame, I fired away. Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/1000s, Aperture f4.2, 18-200mm VR set at 38mm focal length Smoke gets in your eyes. Some burning activity took place in this ancient tomb in Hue. The effect was dramatise by the setting sun which sent its rays piercing through the snoke. I waited until there are people at the gate before I fired away. 50 51

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS In this ninth part of a series of techniques, Steven Yee shall share with you tips on photographing patterns. A travel photographer and photography instructor, Steven Yee conducts the Nikon D40/D40X, D70/D70s and D80 workshop monthly at Knowledge Bowl (www.knowledgebowl.com.sg). More of his works can be found on the Volume One collection of www.discovernikon.com "Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern." Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947), English philosopher and mathematician. Dialogues, June 10, 1943. A pattern is a recurring set of events or objects which repeat in a predictable way. It is one of the things that seasoned photographers will look out for in their quest for new images. It can be the tiles on the floor, the veins of the leaves, the neatly arranged rows of shoes in the kindergarten or even the rows of long shadows created by the pillars in the late afternoon. The photographers obsessions for patterns can be evident in some of the world s greatest images. One need not be an expert in photography to be able to identify patterns from their surroundings. To take nice pictures of the patterns, one needs to equip oneself with the necessary basic photography knowledge as well as with the right equipment. For many beginners, some of the common problems faced will include: Camera or subject shake Messy background Unsure of which angle to adopt In many cases, many beginners overlook the 58 PATTERN Text and Pictures By Steven Yee Pui Chung MBA, B.Eng (Mech), FRPS, FPSS, FPSM, Hon.FPSM, Hon.FKCC, AFIAP distracting objects in the background which can disrupt the pattern or draw the viewers attention away from the pattern. If at all possible, it is usually good to avoid having the background in the image. One quick way to solve this problem is to either move yourself or if you can, try to rearrange the subjects. Should the background cannot be avoided in the image, try to have a simple background. Another common problem faced by photographers is the lack of ideas as to what angle and composition to use to shoot the pattern. Whether to focus on one part of the pattern and render the rest out of focus, or shoot directly head on and have all the patterns sharp, or shoot from an angle, these often leave the photographers with so many options to choose from. It is good to spend some time exploring the various angles. Experiment with the various angles and shoot more, especially if the pattern is nice, shoot both horizontally and vertically. If the results are unsatisfactory, you can always delete the images later. Poor lighting condition and use of low ISO which results in slow shutter speed is the main culprit for camera and subject shake. If the subject is stationary, a good tripod will be useful in preventing camera shake. If you are shooting handheld, it is good to achieve a shutter speed of at least 1/(focal length). Equally important is the ability to appreciate the quality of light at different times of the day as well as the weather condition. Mid day sun is usually avoided to prevent having hotspot on the subjects. Early morning and late afternoon often produces good lighting that light up the subjects nicely. Even on a cloudy day, the flat lighting can also help to produce some modest images. Hence, do not discount the possibility of photographing nice images even on a cloudy day. Some Tips: Be conscious of your surrounding where you can find patterns. It can be closer to you than you can imagine. Try various angles (top, low, eye level). Any lens can shoot pattern, including the fisheye lens. COMING UP NEXT... Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shall share with you his tips on shooting with smoke and fog. How are such pictures taken? What can be good subjects? Look out for it. Avoid clutter in the background. Keep it simple. Use of lighting to create visual impact. If need be, increase ISO to minimize camera shake. With the tips above in mind as well as the case studies below, enjoy feasting your eyes in a world of pattern. Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/750s, Aperture f5, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm focal length One of the icons of Singapore, the Esplanade is probably one of the most photographed subjects besides the Merlion. Different time of the day, different quality of light, different angles, shall yield many different pictures of this spike studded architectural masterpiece. 59

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/40s, Aperture f4.8, 18-200mm VR set at 50mm focal length What attracted me are the colours and the way the incense are neatly arranged in this roadside incense stall in Vietnam. I left my tripod in the bus and the lighting is a bit flat that day. I switch on the VR (Vibration Reduction) on my lenses and set the ISO at 200. Though I did not manage to get 1/(focal length) for the shutter speed, the VR helps. (To minimise camera shake, it is good to have a shutter speed at least 1/focal length). I had to position my angle to minimise the background clutter and put my attention to just the incense sticks. Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/45s, Aperture f6.3, 18-200mm VR set at 42mm focal length Try to be observant and look at things around you. When you were walking in some alleys, or waiting for your drinks to be served in a coffeeshop, some pictures can be taken. I saw this crate of empty bottles and took this shot right from the top. Cropping was done after that to remove any unwanted background. Nikon D2X, Center Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f5, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm focal length The repetitive pillars caught my attention but there was no main subject. I asked my local guide to source for some possible main subject and somehow we managed to find a few workers who were dressed colourfully. Got one of them to pose. Well, it is a custom for them not to reveal their faces, and we respected that. 60 Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO250, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/400s, Aperture f10, 18-200mm VR set at 82mm focal length I saw the row of windows in this old fort in India and I tried to figure out how to approach this shot. I looked around and saw a few workers ferrying baskets of construction materials. I took my position and waited. With everyone of them in the frame, the shot can be a bit messy but nonetheless I shot a couple of shots first. The last one in the group was in blue and I thought to keep the picture simple, I just need one subject. I waited for the rest of the group to clear and when she was left alone, I fired away. 61

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO640, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f3.8, 18-200mm VR set at 24mm focal length This is one of my most interesting encounters where I had a chance to photograph the Cao Dai temple in Vietnam. It is an interesting fusion of a few religions. I was also fascinated by the beautiful tiles on the floor where the devotees were prostrating. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO250, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/40s, Aperture f5.6, 18-200mm VR set at 200mm focal length It may be hard to guess what this is. I was attracted by the lines. This was the inside of the traditional conical hat of the Vietnamese, shot at an angle. Some cropping was done to remove the unwanted areas. The VR helps to minimise camera shake. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/640s, Aperture f4, 18-200mm VR set at 18mm focal length Stacks of incense were arranged in this manner by the roadside in Hue, Vietnam. To be able to see the repetition of the circular arrangement, I chose to shoot from a top angle. I had to tip toe and lean forward, at the same time, avoid casting my shadow on the incense. 62 63

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO500, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/50s, Aperture f5, 10.5mm fisheye Symmetry and patterns can often be seen in the architecture of the buildings. From the inside of the post office in Saigon, Vietnam, I experimented with the fisheye lenses to catch as much of the pattern as I could. The distortion at the side added a different touch to the image. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/80s, Aperture f5.3, 18-200mm VR set at 105mm focal length This is a roadside stall in Vietnam selling padlocks. The padlocks are locked together to form an interesting pattern. The stall owner was adding more padlocks to the chain of locks and this provides more interesting story content compared to just shooting the padlocks alone. Nikon D300, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO500, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/80s, Aperture f5.3, 18-200mm VR set at 120mm focal length We were walking along the streets of Saigon on our way to a temple to do some shots. Along the way, we noticed that many of the shops were closing for the evening. The sliding gates caught my attention and I was hoping that one of the shops gates could open partially with someone peeking out from the shop. And somehow, it happened and I fired away. Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/400s, Aperture f10, 18-200mm VR set at 18mm focal length These colourful shoes in Singapore s Little India are neatly arranged in rows. The evening light was subtle and lit up the shoes with shadows and highlights. Well, if the shoes were not arranged neatly, you can help to arrange them. Actually, this was what I did! 64 65

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/400s, Aperture f10, 18-200mm VR set at 40mm focal length It is good to have a main subject in the midst of the pattern. In this case, I choose to shoot at an angle and use the padlock as my main subject. As usual, I will avoid mid day sun and choose late afternoon as the lighting is not so harsh. Nikon D2X, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f7.6, 18-200mm VR set at 62mm focal length Look around you, I am sure you can find something interesting in some neighbourhood. This flat in downtown Selegie Road attracted my attention whenever I was around the area. The red balconies form an interesting pattern. Despite the fact that I often pass by this area, there is a tendency for procrastination to shoot this pix at a later date. I finally decide to walk to the area to shoot the picture. Nikon D300, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO250, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/5000s, Aperture f5, 18-200mm VR set at 38mm focal length Brooms for sale. Brooms for sale. The makeshift stall owner shouted as she peddled her wares. The late afternoon lighting was good and the brooms were arranged side by side. Ignoring the shoutings by the stall owner, I photographed the brooms from various angles. Nikon D2X, 3-D Matrix metering, Auto White Balance, ISO125, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/20s, Aperture f5.6, 18-200mm VR set at 18mm focal length When overseas, I always have a habit of bringing my camera to wherever I go, even to dinner or toilet! You can be caught by surprise some interesting subject or photography opportunities. The ceiling of this restaurant looks interesting so I took some shots while enjoying my meal at the same time. 66 67

EVENTS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO125, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/8000s, Aperture f2.8, 80-200mm VR set at 120mm focal length These two interesting buildings in Beach Road, Singapore look like 2 slices of cakes. When viewed from certain angles, you can be treated with some visually powerful composition of repetitive lines. Nikon D2X, 3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f4, 18-70mm set at 22mm focal length The monks sat in neat rows as they listened to the teachings of their teacher. I have to be careful in not photographing the mess in the background by choosing a high angle. If I had the opportunity of shooting from the tree top, it would be a unique angle overlooking them from the top. Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO640, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/30s, Aperture f5.3, 18-200mm VR set at 105mm focal length This is a combination of framing and composing patterns. This door of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Singapore has a very nice coat of red paint with a nice door knob. To just shoot the door with the patterns and the door knob, it will be a bit boring. I managed to choose an angle where the red door is framed by another door and a wall. 68 69
