What is Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)? SAR is a side looking radar system that generates a high resolution image of the Earth s surface for remote sensing applications. Main features of radar: > Microwaves (1 mm to 1 m wavelength, 0.3 to 300 GHz frequency) > Different wavelengths are useful for different purposes (bands: X, C, S, L, P) > Has a unique polarization component (helps distinguish the structure of a surface) > The longer the wavelength, the more radar can penetrate rain, clouds and even the ground West Coast of Italy. Courtesy of ESA

Optical versus Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) visible to infrared active microwave

Benefits of SAR SAR can be used as a stand alone data source, or as an enhancement to optical or other types of data. Benefits of using Radar: > Controllable source of illumination sees through clouds, smoke, and at night > Images can be high resolution 1 to 10 meters or better > Different features can be discriminated compared to visible iibl sensors uses surface features like roughness > RADAR excels at detecting unique surface features such as: > Ice, ocean waves > Soil moisture, vegetation mass > Man made object like buildings West Coast of Italy. Courtesy of ESA > Geological structures

Land Cover Classification High vegetation - forest Medium vegetation - forest Short vegetation/very rough soil Medium-strong scatterer - structures/man made construction Very strong scatterer - rock/urban Very rough hard surface Short vegetation mixed with water - Wetland Rough unvegetated surface - water/bare soil/road Smooth unvegetated surface - water/bare soil/road Calm water Smooth bare soil/wet bare soil Rough soil Very rough soil Russia, ALOS PALSAR-1, 15 meter - October 2009
