Preparation for Worship It is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself. Charles Dickens Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn t before! What if Xmas, he thought, doesn t come from a store. What if Christmas perhaps means a little bit more! Dr. Suess When we were children we were grateful to those who filled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for filling our stockings with legs? GK Chesterton The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity - hope for pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory - because at the Father s will Jesus Christ became poor, and was born in a stable so that thirty years later He might hand on a cross. J.I. Packer THE ADVENT WREATH Over the centuries many traditions and observances have developed throughout the Church to help us celebrate the nativity of Christ. The lighting of the candles in the Advent Wreath on the four Sundays before Christmas in anticipation of the coming of Christ can add renewed joy and meaning to our worship. The circle of the wreath represents God's eternity- Who was, and is, and ever will be. The evergreen symbolizes God's gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The pink candle represents joy. The three purple candles represent hope, faith, and peace. The center white candle represents Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP The Prelude Matters of Church Life The Lighting of the Fourth Advent Candle The Mike Powell family +The Call to Worship Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. +The Hymn of Praise (stanzas 1, 3 & 4) Hymn No. 131 Angels, from the Realms of Glory Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth; Ye who sang creation's story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth: Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ, the newborn King. Shepherds, in the fields abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant Light: Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ, the newborn King. Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great Desire of nations, Ye have seen His natal star: Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ, the newborn King. Saints before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear: Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ, the newborn King.

New Testament Reading Ephesians 2:12-22 Remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. Corporate Prayer +The Hymn of Thanksgiving (stanzas 1, 2 & 3) Hymn No. 145 O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come, ye, O come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him, born the King of angels! O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! Sing choirs of angels, sing in exultation, O sing, all ye bright hosts of heav n above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest! O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to Thee be all glory giv n; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing! O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! Presentation of Tithes & Offerings

The Offertory David & Kathy Montgomery Instrumental +The Doxology and Prayer of Dedication Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. +Hymn of Preparation (stanzas 1 & 2) Hymn No. 141 O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. The Scripture Matthew 1:1-17 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father

of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. The Sermon Notes: Jesus Family Tree The Rev. +The Hymn of Response (stanzas 3 & 4) Hymn No. 141 O Little Town of Bethlehem How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is giv n! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heav n. No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still the dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel. Amen.
