Apprenticeship positions in Wood Machining As an apprentice in wood machinist you will be trained on a wide range of wood machines and also be responsible for the basic maintenance of all the machines you have received training on, which will include changing cutters, saws and blades, lubricating and cleaning tools. You will be trained to set the machines to fine tolerances. Vernier gauges and other precision measuring equipment can be used when checking finished sizes. They may work on new furniture or restore old pieces of furniture. They may also work on fitted items such as staircases, wall panels and doors, and on musical instruments like pianos. As a Cutter you would measure, prepare and cut fabrics needed for upholstered furniture and soft furnishings. You would work with textiles taking measurements to cut materials such as leather, suede and cotton prints to specific dimensions and shapes. As a Sewing machinist you would prepare and sew components needed for upholstered furniture and soft furnishings. As an Upholsterer you would add padding and soft covers to furniture. You would work with textiles, design and colour to cover or re-cover items with materials such as leather, suede or cotton.
