Optical Compact Receiver ORA 9222-1G SCALABLE OPTICAL COMP The ORA 9222-1G is a modularly equipped, highlinear FTTC fibre node for use in HFC networks. The ORA 9222-1G has two independent downstream paths as well as two independent upstream paths (each can be segmented). Up to four outputs can be configured using output taps. The compact housing features integrated fibre management. The modular concept of the ORA 9222-1G allows system-specific configuration of the fibre node. The required modules can be easily replaced or retro-fitted, an advantage during initial equipping and retrofitting. In simplest operation, the forward path is equipped with an extremely low-noise receiver. Use of a second optical receiver enables redundancy. adjusts itself to the correct values. On-site, the RF output signal of the fibre node can be tapped and checked at a test socket. The ORA 9222-1G can be equipped with an HMS or DOCSIS compliant monitoring transponder. When integrated into a network management system, fibre node alarms can be controlled and device parameters and functions set and monitored. The integrated fibre management fixture allows convenient, secure accommodation of glass-fibres and plugs, and in addition the fixing of any optical multiplexers/demultiplexers and splitters used. All local device settings are userfriendly and menu-controlled via the connectable hand-held unit (HTE 10). The automatic control of the receiver provides a constant RF output level over the complete intended optical input power range. The opto-electrically converted signal is raised to the required level and slope with the aid of high-linear, low-noise amplifier stages and pre-emphasis elements. The signal distribution on both of the active RF outputs occurs through a corresponding plug-in card, whereby if only one RF output is required the second output path can be switched off via the hand-held unit, leading to significant reduction of fibre node power consumption. The stability of the output level can be achieved via an automatic control that evaluates either one or two pilot signals (from the correspondingly specified frequency range), available both as a CW carrier and as PAL or QAM modulated signals. The levelling of the compact fibre node may be done in a time-saving way and without the use of additional signal meters by selecting the function 'automatic levelling' of the RF output level. For this function the pilot level values are adjusted and saved ex works. Only the required pilot level values need to be entered in the field, with the aid of the hand-held unit. The device then automatically 4

Optical Compact Receiver ORA 9022-1G OPTICAL Frequency range 862/1,000 MHz, switchable Higher output level for operation at 1,000 MHz Modular FTTC Fibre Node Internal optical interfaces for unrestricted outdoor operation /protection class IP 54 (Protection class IP 67 on request) Exterior optical interfaces also possible as option High level of functionality in compact design Electronic settings using hand-held unit Automatic levelling in the forward path Electronic settings using hand-held unit Convenient fibre compartment: WDM coupler or splitter can be integrated Full redundant operation possible in forward and return path 1 or 2 active high level outputs (2 separate output stages) Output level up to 112 dbµv per output "Plug-and-Play" due to combination of AGC (optical input level) and ALSC (via 2 pilot signals) 1 or 2 plug-in return path transmitters for segmentation or redundancy Optical DFB return path transmitter modules in 1,310 nm CWDM technology available Separate broadband inputs up to 200 MHz in return path Segmentation or redundancy Monitorable by optional HMS or DOCSIS S transponder module Highly efficient switched-mode power supply Optical connectors: SC/APC or E-2000 Top functionality The optical compact receiver ORA 9022-1G from Kathrein combines previously unparalleled functionality with excellent technical data at an excellent price-performance ratio. An integrated, double-sided fibre compartment houses the fibres and optical connectors. Practical detail: there is also space for mini-tube or compact optical splitters or WDM couplers. They are then protected and a separate splice housing is thus unnecessary. This concept is also advantageous during installation: the optical receiver can be completely preassembled. During installation in the field it is only necessary to make the fibre connections. 10

L COMPACT AMPLIFIER Fully redundant The device can be equipped electro-optically with plug-in modules for forward path receivers or return path transmitters. Up to two modules in each case provide fully redundant operation. The modules are easy to replace. Various DFB types in 1,310 nm and in CWDM technology are available as return path transmitters. Thanks to the high output power of up to +6 dbm, very large distances can be covered. As a result, it is possible to design optical fibre networks without intermediate hubs. "Plug-and-Play" redefined Optical Compact Receiver fies set-up. During automatic levelling the operator only needs to define the required output level and slope. At the press of a button the device then automatically sets optimal dynamic data. The copy function can copy all settings and transfer them to other devices: setup could hardly be quicker. The integrated 2-pilot control and DC-light controlled AGC ensure a constant output level. Variable return path management Particularly interesting for step-by-step network expansion is the electronically switchable return path matrix. The two return path inputs, which are independent due to separate diplex filters, can be switched as required to the two return path transmitters. For instance, both return paths can be initially coupled to one transmitter. With increasing data traffic, a second return path transmitter can be fitted and each of the two return paths connected to a dedicated transmitter. An external ingress test socket is available for each of the return paths so that measurements can be performed quickly. The signal flow direction on these test sockets can be switched from "measure" to "inject" so that signals can be injected into the return paths. This function can also be used for broadband return path inputs up to 200 MHz. The optical compact receiver ORA 9022-1G from Kathrein is suitable for all cable network operators with HFC networks. Due to the step-by-step segmentation features, the plug-in modules and the integrated fibre compartment, it provides the flexibility to optimally adapt HFC networks to demand. All device settings are adjusted electronically using the hand-held unit HTE 10. This feature not only saves plug-in cards, but also simpli- 11

Optical Compact Receiver Redundancy Compact plug-in modules provide redundancy in the forward and return path. The modules can be easily upgraded or replaced in operation. Electronic setup All parameters and operating data settings are adjusted electronically using the hand-held unit HTE 10. This feature allows automatic levelling in the forward path and pre-setting in the return path. The values set can be copied at the press of a button and transferred to another device. Integrated fibre compartment The integrated fibre compartment houses the fibres connected, optical connectors and splices Compartment feature for optical splitters or multiplexer Mini-tube or compact accessories can be straightforwardly fastened to the fibre compartment. Optical interfaces either internal or external Due to the flexible interface management, the ORA 9022-1G adapts straightforwardly to the required type of connection. Pigtails or pre-assembled optical break-out cables can be laid inside the device. As a result the optical connectors are housed with complete protection. Mounting outdoors to protection class IP 54 is then possible (IP 67 on request). Using the optical coupling fastener, the con nectors can also be attached to the exterior. Quick connection with pigtails is then possible. 12 ORA 9022-1G

DETAILS Optical Compact Receiver Flexible monitoring via DOCSIS or HMS The ORA 9022-1G can already take advantage of all the benefits DOCSIS monitoring has to offer. What's more, it can be integrated in any HMScompatible monitoring system. Electronically switchable return path matrix Two separate diplex filters make it possible to handle the signals from the two return path inputs separately. Segmentation using two return path transmitters is possible as is the aggregation of both return paths. In this case, redundant operation with auto matic switching is also possible. Externally accessible test sockets and broadband return path inputs Each return path route also has a dedicated test socket as well as an Ingress Control Switch (ICS). The test sockets can be switched. As a result both the incoming return path signal can be checked and also test signals injected. The sockets can also be used for separate return path injection as a broadband return path input up to 200 MHz. Two active output stages Each RF output has a separate final stage. Due to the excellent dynamic data, longer amplifier cascades can also be connected downstream. If operated with one output, the unused final stage can be simply switched off to reduce the power. 13

Optical Compact Receivers General Information ORA 920/921 OPTICAL Modular fibre node Distribution of CATV frequency multiplex signals GaAs-MMIC technology Innovative operational concept: - Settings made using slide switches - Device settings can be reproduced exactly - Economisation of insert cards and attenuation pads One or two outputs can be configured Extremely low-noise receiver (best device in its class DC light-controlled AGC Optical DFB/CWDM return path transmitter modules can be plugged in (option) Integrated diplex filter 65/85 MHz Separate broadband input up to 200 MHz in the return path Monitorable with HMS or DOCSIS transponder (option) Highly efficient switched-mode power supply Die-cast aluminium housing Ingress Control Switch Optical connectors: SC/APC or E-2000-2000 24 The optical compact receivers ORA 920/921 provide the largest possible range of functions in a very compact housing. Like the amplifiers in the VGF 939/ VOS 95x family, all essential settings are made using slide switches. On the other hand, they profit from the optical receiver and transmitter modules for the ORA 9022-1G. As low-cost optical compact receivers, they are used particularly in networks with a wide-ranging optical fibre structure or in smaller optical distribution networks.

L COMPACT RECEIVER Due to the modular layout, the slide switch technology and the well thought-out details, setup and service are quick and straightforward. Here the ORA 920/921 can provide functions that are not a matter of course in this device class. Above all, the return path up to 200 MHz, up to 7 A remote feed current per output, direct feed on the device, the monitoring feature via HMS transponder, the switchable 15 MHz high-pass filter and many other advantages are worthy of mention. Optical Compact Receivers General Information As standard, a DC light-controlled AGC automatically ensures the output level remains constant. Deviations or fluctuations in the optical input level are compensated. Various DFB types in 1,310 nm and in CWDM technology are available as return path transmitters. Thanks to the high output power of up to +6 dbm, very large distances can be covered. As a result it is possible to design optical fibre networks without intermediate hubs, saving fibre. The adjustment of the Optical Modulation Index (OMI) for the return path transmitter is solved particularly cleverly. The required OMI is set electronically using a rotary switch. However, this setting can also be changed using remote maintenance via the HMS transponder. Light emitting diodes indicate which setting currently has priority. On the ORA 920/921 the optical interfaces are located on the exterior of the device and are therefore easy to access. Beside them is the separate broadband return path input up to 200 MHz. The remote feed voltage for the operation of the ORA 920 and downstream amplifiers can be fed directly into the power supply unit. Each RF output with its dedicated remote feeder reactance coil can be loaded up to 7 A (10 A in total). 25

Optical Compact Receivers General Information ORA 920/921 Modularity Compact, high performance plug-in modules ensure reliable operation. The modules can be upgraded or replaced easily. Slide switches All important settings are made using slide switches practically without signal interruption. The feature makes it possible to largely avoid plug-in cards or attenuation pads. External optical interfaces The optical connectors are fitted to the housing where they are easy to access. Separate broadband return path input up to 200 MHz The ORA 920/921 is already designed for extreme broadband return path applications up to 200 MHz. Signals are handled separately. Two configurable outputs Two outputs can be configured on the output splitter field using taps or a splitter. 26

DETAILS Optical Compact Receivers General Information Universal insert position If, in special cases, it should be necessary to use a system equaliser the ORA 920/921 is prepared. Integrated high-pass 15 MHz For the suppression of ingress interference, a 15 MHz high-pass can be enabled. This feature simplifies use in the vicinity of sub scribers. The return path can also be completely switched off manually. An electronic Ingress Control Switch (ICS) is also available. Optical Modulation Index (OMI) adjustment The OMI can be adjusted either using an electronic rotary switch or using remote maintenance via the HMS transponder. The method used for adjustment is displayed by LED. Generously dimensioned remote feeder reactance coils Each of the two outputs is equipped with a remote feeder reactance coil up to 7 A. Direct feed The remote feed voltage, also for downstream amplifiers, can be fed directly into the device. Up to 10 A can be fed. 27

GENERAL Optical Compact Receivers General Information Monitoring via DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS Functions Both ORA 9022-1G and ORA 920/921 can be conveniently monitored via DOCSIS and Euro- DOCSIS 2.0. For this purpose, Kathrein has de- veloped the DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS transponder TVM 1000. Monitoring without a conventional HMS system is thus possible. Advantages In addition, (Euro)DOCSIS-specific features can also be used for monitoring purposes, providing the following advantages: - S/N measurement through carrier - Analysis of return loss - Quick response to polling queries - Packet error analysis - Encoded data transmission - Display of complete cable modem status information - Local access via web browser - Ethernet connection from the transponder to the headend for service purposes - Integrated management system for all cable modems and HFC networks - No own HMS monitoring system required The optical compact receivers ORA 9022-1G and ORA 920/921 can of course be integrated into any HMS-compatible system. The HMS transponder TVM 850/H fulfils this task. The DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS transponder TVM 1000 works just like a normal cable modem and can also be integrated into cable modem management systems through SNMP. This al- lows all parameters to be displayed, switched or monitored, just as they are in HMS-compatible monitoring systems. Some of these parameters are (depending on the device): - Operational voltage - Internal temperature - Optical input level - Optical output level - Operation of ICS - Switch-over to another receiver module - Switch-over of return path matrix - Attenuation for return path transmitter (Optical Modulation Index) - Fibre recognition on/off and much more 31
