Boulder County Nature Associa tion 11 1 1 111 1 Colorado Bird Observatory Allegra Collister Nature Area Bird Banding Summary - Fall 1999 Sa~PnlS WSO,DIIB(i ILIP Dj1a Eaju ajnlxrr Jaiwlro- ~~431lw The nets are frozen this morning. No more migrants are being seen. The nets were catching more falling leaves than birds. Its time. On October 13th, the 9th consecutive fail season of bird banding came to a close after 3 1 days of study. We had opened on a balmy August 25th. Our efforts yielded 50 different species and 396 individual birds captured and banded. A Broad-tailed Hummingbird was captured and released unbanded. A Yellow-breasted Chat was honored as our 6,000th bandee. Also, we were excited to find three new and different (for ACNA) species in our nets. Mourning Dove, Worm-eating Warbler and Lark Bunting. Thats five new species in '99! Our busiest day was September 9th with 34 birds of 14 species. Wow! Its hard to believe that we have banded 6,345 birds. And, to have captured 110 different species. When including the species sighted but not captured, the total for ACNA is 177. We think its an amazing record for such a small tract of habitat. Members of Colorado Native Plant Society, at our request, have initiated a vegetation study at ACNA. The immediate focus is to identi6 the vegetation at and in close proximity to the net locations. Then, a more comprehensive inventory of the whole gulch will be conducted. Eventually, the various plant communities can be mapped to help determine, and confirm, relationships with the avian transients and residents. We appreciate all the volunteer interest and help. Also, again at our invitation, David Leatherman, Entomologist for Colorado State Forest Service, has agreed to help us identify many of the insect denizens of the gulch. We've always been curious about what insects are attracted to the gulch and why. And, of course, we are even more curious about what insect critters are on the bird's menus. Which spider makes the best web for nest building material? What can the bugs tell us about the birds? Again, we are very appreciative of David's efforts. We've witnessed a lot of change in '99. St. Vrain Road is now a fresh strip of black asphalt. Traffic is increasing and so is its speed. The horse ranch, on the south side of the gulch, is for sale. And the area around the gulch continues to grow...... What next? We eagerly anticipate the year 2000. It will be our 10th year of banding at ACNA.
