Serious 'analytical' poker players By Chazbo54 If you play 'by the seat of your pants', this is NOT the book for you, period. If you're a 'statistics' kind of player and work/think while you're at the table, it MAY be for you. If you're willing to put a LOT OF WORK into preparing for your games to gain a big edge at the table AND 'work' while you're at the table, this could just be the best book to 'get over the hump'. This is a 'memory' book using the techniques like those of Harry Lorraine and Jerry West, applied to poker (or any card game really). It WILL take a lot of work to learn the memory techniques, but the potential for bettering your game is enormous. I suspect most people who buy the book will TRY to get the techniques down, but will ultimately fail and it will be a waste of time (as far as bettering their game). But those who do learn and practice at the techniques (to make them second-nature) will benefit IF they apply it to their game. So if you're thinking you can learn something to better your game just by reading the book a few times, don't waste your time and money. I suggest anyone considering buying the book, check out Jerry West or Harry Lorraine's Memory Book to get an idea of what the basic techniques are. If you're willing to do the work and use those kinds of memory
'tricks', then by all means buy this book. I had Jerry West's book years ago, learned a couple techniques and then got 'lazy' about using the techniques. So, this is my second attempt. With the extra motivation of it being applied to a specific situation (poker), I may just succeed this time! For those who like hold 'em, stats, and memory games By Kara This is not the book you pick up to read on the plane ride to Vegas. Onika lays out memory techniques to becoming a better poker. This is not a quick tips kind of book. You'll need to read it, practice his memory exercises, let it sink in, then move on to the next chapter to memorize more things. I'm a casual poker player, and this review is intended for other casual players--i'm sure serious poker players would feel very differently about this book than I did. I'll play a few hold 'em games every time I'm in Vegas (which is annually for a family trip), and I play a bit of free online poker for fun. I can definitely see Onika's tips coming in handy, but I haven't yet dedicated the time to put them to use. I would expect it would take a good few days of solid studying to get to the point where I could actually use what Onika teaches here. Despite that, I found the book really interesting. I'm a numbers kind of girl, and this really breaks poker down into the numbers. It goes far beyond straight hand strength and into statistical strategy. He talks about real poker strategy, and it was fascinating to get into the head of a poker player. The best part of the book was the section on VPIP (how often a Player Voluntary puts money Into the Pot), Chapter B (yes, that says "Chapter B" not "Chapter 9"). By knowing another player's VPIP, you can get a good idea of how strong your hand is compared to theirs which is invaluable. I buy almost every poker book that comes out and read them too. I have a fair idea what is being published these days and how relevant they are. Of course, these are just my ideas and YMMV. To me, this tome is either impractical or a rehash of exercises found elsewhere. The bottom line is that I think that your time and money is better used on more practical books. Even a poker math book would be better than this. Poker theory has evolved a lot in the last few years and a *lot* of very fine books are now outdated and/or irrelevant.
