Calling All Leaders By Elizabeth Cambra Um, have you ever, ahhhh, been listening to a speaker that is using soooo many crutch words that you can t focus on what they are trying to, ah, share with you? Luckily, for me and you - Outrigger has its own Toastmasters club. I have strengthened my speaking skills and am now plagued by counting how many crutch words I use when public speaking. Outrigger supports this important skill - used both personally and professionally - through its own Toastmasters club. Toastmasters is a national organization (www.toastmasters.org) whose main goal is to help its members overcome their fear of speaking. Their mission statement reads empowering people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change. Our club is hosting an open house on Wednesday, February 10, from 12 p.m. 1 p.m. in the OEH/Learning Center. We invite all employees to join us and be a part of the camaraderie. Our group is full of laughs and very supportive, as each of us strives to sharpen our public-speaking skills. The best part of our gatherings for me is the opportunity to get to know my coworkers on a personal level ~ something that I don t always have the convenience of doing. I hope I ve convinced you to check us out; did I mention there will be desserts at our meeting on the 10th? If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Foley, Club President; Laurie Hirata, Club Vice President of Education; or myself. We look forward to seeing YOU there. Wedding Bells! Congratulations to Karen Gonzaga on her marriage to Cory Mashiba on October 17, 2009, at the Hale Koa Hotel. 2009 Outrigger Hotels Hawaii An Equal Opportunity Employer Page

Australia s Outrigger Academy s First Graduate By Gavan Conway Early in 2009, Outrigger in Australia formed a partnership with a training provider, Club Training Australia, to form the Outrigger Academy, an affiliate of Outrigger University. Using Club Training Australia s accreditation, employees who complete various levels of training, from basic entry to Advanced Diploma level, can be issued with a nationally-recognized, Outrigger-branded qualification. Employees may complete the courses by a combination of recognition for their prior learning, completing assignments on their own time, and attending normal classes. This is a great opportunity for employees who have not gained any formal qualifications, at the same time, preparing them to apply for more senior positions in the future. The first graduate of the Outrigger Academy is Lauren Cole. Lauren is a Guest Services Agent at the front desk working at the Outrigger Twin Towns Resort. She recently completed a Certificate Level 3 in Hospitality Operations. Eight other staff members are currently undertaking courses from school-based trainees, who combine normal high school studies with hospitality courses and part-time work at Outrigger, through to Advanced Diploma level. Outrigger receives payment from both State and Federal Governments to pay the tuition fees and compensate for time away from the workplace. Congratulations, Lauren! Gold medal winner Aruna Devi, Commis Chef at the Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji. Lauren Cole and Carolyn Bates, Training Supervisor Club Training Australia All s Well that Ends Well! By Darren Shaw English novelist Virginia Woolf famously said, One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. Well, it s no wonder our guests keep coming back to the Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji when they are treated to not only great service and facilities, but also the incredible dining experiences offered by our hard-working kitchen team who recently won a swag of awards. Reaffirming our position in the South Pacific as a top dining destination, twelve staff from our kitchen brigade recently competed in Fiji s annual Fiji Salon Culinaire Awards held in Nadi. They were up against a record number of 250 chefs from around the Fijian Islands, with all twelve entrants taking away medals, which is an incredible feat and one of which we are all very proud. Twelve bronze medals, six silver, and one gold were won, and this fantastic result is testament to the dedicated and passionate kitchen team who strive for excellence in food innovation and guest satisfaction. I couldn t end this story without a special mention about our Commis Chef, Aruna Devi, who won the gold medal for her sensational curry dish. Aruna joined Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji as a steward in 2007, and it was her dedication and enthusiasm that saw her rise through the ranks to Commis Chef in August this year, and just three months later, she takes home a gold medal! This was the first competition Aruna has ever entered, and her accolade is significant on many levels, with 2009 seeing her achieve a number of professional milestones, including being nominated Employee of the Month in May. Another special mention goes to our Junior Sous Chef Priya Darshani, who was the 2nd runner-up in the prestigious Fiji Chef of the Year. Priya looks after our signature restaurant Ivi, and as the only female competitor in the hotly contested category, was commended for her great workmanship, while also wowing the judges with her dessert, rated as the best in the competition. I am very proud of our kitchen brigade who entered this year s competition, and on behalf of the entire Outrigger ohana, vinaka vaka levu. Page 12
