BELFAIRS ACADEMY LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE What have we been up to? September 2015 May 2016 LRC OPENING TIMES MONDAY-THURSDAY: 7.45am-4pm FRIDAY: 7.45am-3.30pm TUESDAY: HOMEWORK CLUB WITH CO-EDUCATORS MONDAY- FRIDAY: HOMEWORK SUPPORT WITH MISS HAWKES THURSDAY & FRIDAY: MOVIE LUNCH CLUB

SEPTEMBER 2015 BOOKS AND MUCH MORE Belfairs Academy Learning Resource Centre offer both students and staff a fantastic range of Fiction and Non Fiction books. We also have a wide variety of other learning resources to motivate and encourage students. The LRC celebrated the great author Roald Dahl s birthday. Students participated in competitions, and quick fact-finding quizzes for prizes. It was a really fun day with all the authors books on display and available for loan. It was amazing to see the students knowledge on this author and his books. We also had a showing of the movies based on Roald Dahl s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda during break and lunch.

SEPTEMBER 2015 BOOK REVIEW COMPETITION James Beasley Year 10 New LRC Ambassador. Olivia Solomons LRC AMBASSADORS Ashley Oakley Students from year 7-11 were invited to participate in a book review competition. After reading a book of their own choice, they had to write a comprehensive review, including information about why they chose the book and facts about the author. The entries were all of a very high standard. Three winning entries were chosen from year 7, 9 and 11. All three students received a book voucher and their photographs and reviews were displayed in the LRC. Tess Hadley Year 7 Amy Baker Year 9 Ashley Oakley Year 11 Vivienne Wade Luke Cook

OCTOBER 2015 GOTHIC HORROR LITERATURE WEEK Students enjoyed a Gothic Horror Fest for the week leading up to Halloween. We focused on all the different genres of Gothic Horror Literature, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to R.L. Stine s Goosebumps. The LRC exhibited displays about Halloween and how different countries and cultures around the world celebrated this festival. We also looked at Gothic Fashion & Music. Students also participated in mini quizzes, competitions and fact finding about the History of Halloween and where it originated from. HALLOWEEN

NOVEMBER 2015 GUY FAWKES THE PLOT, HISTORY OF THE FIREWORK, SCIENCE & COMPOSITION BEHIND THE FIREWORK, FIREWORKS AROUND THE WORLD. The week leading up to November 5th I thought it would be fun to create a Guy Fawkes/Firework History display around the LRC. Each display was themed, Guy Fawkes The Plot, The History of Fireworks, Firework Culture/Countries, The Science & Composition behind the Firework. Students were fascinated to see the science behind how a firework is created and the history behind them. Also how fireworks are used in different cultures and countries around the world. The students shared information and took part in a quiz with questions such as what colour is the most expensive & hardest colour firework to produce? and Where did fireworks originate from? It was a great success with mini prizes for the correct answers.

DECEMBER 2015 TIME TO CELEBRATE THE AUTHOR J.K.ROWLING, and Many of the students and staff are huge fans of Harry Potter, I decided to make it a Harry Potter Christmas with a quiz that everyone could take part in. Over the weeks running up to the Christmas break students and staff signed up. The three Academy Colleges Endeavour, Defender and Resolute would play against each other to see which college was the ultimate Harry Potter Fan. Heats between the colleges took place over two weeks in the Learning Resource Centre, drawing a really good crowd of supporters from each College. We proceeded to eliminate teams and the questions got more difficult. The final took place in the main hall with a huge audience of both students and staff. The Grand Final was Resolute V Defender; it was a nail biting grand final with some really difficult questions. Resolute won the competition by only ½ a mark. It was so much fun, the Resolute team walked away with Amazon Vouchers and a certificate. We also showed all the Harry Potter Films before school, during break, lunch and after school. Winning Team Resolute College Scored 28.5 out of 30
