Mark Lipps wife Tammy catered the Pasadena trip, and the club contributed $107, or $1 per member..rotarian of the Month is Paul Allman, whose musical leadership was recognized jointly with his tuneful muse, Sharon Grandinette.

Spring Flings There are multiple spring events. President Shannon encouraged us to join her at the District Conference at Lake Arrowhead May 4-7, especially the Friday night traditional Open House to be hosted by Mark Burton and our club. Best of all, Gerry Morton has offered his nearby home for up to 10 member guests..and there s the RI Convention in Atlanta. And March 25 is Stop Hunger Now with Mike Matthews at Pacific School, with Mike and David Gendron providing barbecue..and join Kathleen Terry on March 4 for a District Forum on child sex trafficking.

Happy Dollars Donn Ennis wife Donna is now a published author with her book on Contemplative Prayer available on Amazon, Kindle and Barnes & Noble..Jason Wallace admired the Chases 55 years of marriage, noting that family is everything..kathleen Terry was grateful for Deb Arnold s dine-around.richard Montgomery was grateful for the success of the Beach Cities Toy Drive..Loli Ramezani enjoyed New Year s Eve in New York City with her reluctant 16-year-old who ended up having a great time..ed Kushins led 60 Polar Bears into the surf on New Year s morning, and he also told us about his son s book on The Art of Star Wars, Amazon s current #1 selection among movie books. Jan Buike thanked us for supporting the seniors holiday luncheon. More Happy Dollars Steve Murillo is happy Patrick Fard is back from Japan so that Steve no longer has to run the dojo. There is a major karate event downtown on January 29, and we will get a preview demonstration at our January 23 meeting.tom Jeffry appreciated Barbara Matles efforts in arranging his trip to Vienna and Budapest.Dave Long appreciated dinner at Jason Wallace s home for their group of Neil Young aficionados.. Charlie Steinmetz announced that David Boochever, Deb Arnold and he are all on the Board of the Archeological Institute of America.. Wade Austin said something about a game USC played in Pasadena.. Dan Saks is happy that Mark Lipps will be bicycling with him again. President Shannon described some rough times for her husband Chris, whose 30-year stepfather passed away and whose mom has dementia his mom s Labrador suffered the consequences of overfeeding, and Shannon is grateful for Deb Robertson s efforts to return the dog to health.

John Nylund What can be said about John Nylund that could possibly be enough? The Doctor Is In are perhaps the warmest and funniest words ever spoken from our podium you will see older members smiling to themselves as they read this. He was the consensus best podium president ever, and we ve had some very good ones. John still practices dermatology here in the South Bay, and is still the doctor to the Kings and Lakers. He and his wife Andrea have been with us for decades, both overcoming daunting health issues and still thriving, both at home and in the office, and as proud parents of their very successful son. This country boy from South Dakota was, in younger years, an extreme skier, and, lately, an avid golfer. Rarely does a movie or music festival pass by without John in attendance. He is as warm and kind and gentle a soul as you ll ever meet. But it s those podium moments that imprinted him on this club s history. Each meeting he would don his stethoscope, pull out his flip charts prepared just for us, and explain some medical issue to us, with plenty of serious content and ridiculously funny commentary. John has regretfully resigned from the club, leaving a parting gift of $1000 on his way out the door. He will be sorely missed by anyone privileged to know him. Suggestion to club presidents: just as President Shannon brought back Kent Caldwell for the holiday meeting, try to persuade the Doctor to don his stethoscope every now and then. Yours In Rotary, Jim Hallett
