OH WOW It was the spookiest day of the year, and many frightful faces could be found at our weekly breakfast, some were even costumes. Scariest of all was our very own president, who donned an Obama mask, but neither promised nor delivered any change. The flag salute was led by Don Jung and Ed Kushins delivered a thought of the day: Paul Tsongas said after he retired that no man on his death bed ever said: I wished I had spent more time at the office. Ed also told us that Steve Jobs last words were: Oh Wow, Oh Wow, Oh Wow. It is my understanding that he was checking out a new application at the time, which will allow him to communicate from the afterlife (unfortunately it requires flash, so it is unavailable on the IPad). Song of the Day Summer is over, but the music keeps coming. Kent Caldwell has a song book for every season, and we started off fall with Godspell s Day by Day. In the background one could hear the faint sounds of a few Rotarians that didn t seem to find the joy in song. Joke of the Day President Bill Bloomfield put on his PC hat to tell us his joke of the morning. Maybe he should have put the hat on later in the meeting when he put on his Obama mask (just a thought). President Bill s joke: On Halloween, a little boy dressed as a pirate. He went up to a house and rang the doorbell. A man answered and said, "Oh, a pirate. But where are your buccaneers?" The little boy replied. "Under my bucking hat." Holiday Gift Baskets For those who are helping Sandpipers this year with their Holiday Gift Baskets, a big thank you. The 100 families that Sandpipers sponsors are all accounted for, and we have plenty of help with getting the baskets and other gifts prepared for delivery. A Trip to Russia and Armenia Roger Civalleri, Harris Bass, and Charlie Steinmetz shared their wonderful experience together in Russia and Armenia. They started

off in Moscow, where they saw Red Square, the Kremlin, and many beautiful onion-domed cathedrals. In between their sightseeing, they made periodic stops to Harris s hotel room directly across from the Kremlin to indulge in some wine (or as it is called in Russia, a soft drink). Next on their journey was a speed train to St. Petersburg (also previously known as Leningrad). This city is famously known for being named after Peter the Great, it was also named by Peter himself. While in St. Petersburg, the group visited Peter s summer palace, and the Hermitage museum. The Hermitage is rivaled by only the Louvre in Paris as the greatest museum in the world. Finally the group ended their trip in Armenia, where they explored an amazing archeological site in a cave. Armenians are known for having invented everything, except the internet. While at the cave the group saw the world s oldest shoe, skirt, and wine press. Also found in the cave were the oldest Big Mac, and a Twinkie (still in perfectly edible condition). Charlie stated that the cave likely dates back as far as 12,000 years. Craft Talks Robin Gary is a pilates instructor, who is passionate about sharing her career with the world. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates, who later trained athletes and dancers in New York in the 1920s. Today pilates can be found all over the world. Robin was born in Paris, but moved to Phoenix with her parents when she was 6 months old. She moved to Los Angeles at the age of 21, and began working at Playgirl magazine. For anyone like Paul Allman who posed for Playgirl during that time period, she has promised to keep your secret safe. Robin then went on to have a career as a dancer in Las Vegas for the Lido de Paris show, and then onto the Zurich Opera Company in Switzerland. In 1983 Robin returned to Los Angeles where she worked in the commercial advertising industry and in 1995 Robin joined Sandpipers, where she got a great taste for the philanthropy that she is embarking on today as part of our Rotary Club.

Stephanie Skrbin is a commercial real estate associate with Lee & Associates in Sherman Oaks. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys travel, tennis, and running. Yours in Rotary, Alex Yoffe Richstone Tutoring Begins Nov. 8 We will begin our tutoring at Richstone on Tuesday, November 8. Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Lindy's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! Rotary Make-Up Clubs - 12:15pm Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
