World War - Scenarios by David Kershaw. Version 20170728 Summary If you ve seen a Zombie movie, you ve seen a Zombie movie. There are many different types of Zombies: Some lumber, some run; some come from the living, some come from the dead; sources can be an infection, a host, extra-terrestrial, or even an evil magician. They might not even be Zombies, they could be vampires, aliens, a dormant species, animals, and so on. This document gives different options to play WWZ introducing different types of s based on their documentary evidence from the world of cinema, TV, books and others. To start, a series of special characteristics are described. These can be used individually or in whatever combination you desire. Then a number of scenarios are detailed many based on famous s from fiction. An additional rule is that a successful research roll can be used to remove a special characteristic. These are labelled with a letter of the alphabet in order to assist looking them up. A. Fast. The s get three movements instead of the usual two. The third movement is treated the same as the second i.e. the s move to another region before attacking. B. Slow. These s only get one movement. C. Migratory. The first movement is as per the second: i.e. the s move to another region before attacking. D. Evolving. Each turn randomise the priority. E. Piles. s can form piles to overcome forts: Forts have a rating of 4 instead of the usual 6. F. Hordeing. When dividing the s into two groups, instead of dividing the s evenly roll a D6. Split the s into a group equal to this roll and another group consisting of the rest. If the D6 roll is equal to or greater than the number of s then one group is a single and the other group is the rest. Once divided, the largest group is the group that moves. G. Flight.
Either the s can fly (like Vampires) or flighted animals are infected. DZs cannot be occupied by any units in the game. H. Directed. The s will move with preferrentially to their priority targets. Before moving a to another region, roll a D6. On a roll of 1-3 the s do not move randomly but instead will move to the adjacent region with their number 1 priority target. If there are two or more such regions then choose one at random. If there is no priority 1 region adjacent, then choose a priority 2 region in the same manner. If there is no priority 2 region adjacent, then choose a priority 3 region. If there are no priority regions adjacent at all then just choose a region randomly as normal. I. Feasting. Treat the second move as per the first i.e. they will attack a valid target in the same Region, before moving to another.
Scenarios Each scenario specifies the start up details for the game and a number of special characteristics. For example: Scenario 0: The Basic Game. This scenario is the basic game as described in the rules for a generic zombie outbreak. Priority Burst 2 2 Minimum = 2 Maximum = 5 None Scenario 1: The Random Game. This scenario randomises the initial characteristics to give a different game each time. Priority Burst Determine randomly. Roll a D6 and divide by 2, rounding up Roll a D6 and divide by 2, rounding up Roll two D6 re-roll if the numbers are the same. Set the minimum burst to the lower of the two numbers and the maximum burst to the higher. None Other rules: Optionally, you may choose one or more special characteristics. Scenario 2: 28 Days Later. These films, the first by directed by Danny Boyle in 2002 and the second ( 28 Weeks Later directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo) are set in the UK and feature the Rage virus turning humans into frenzied killing machines most noted for their fast speed. Priority 3 = Farmland Burst 2 1 Minimum = 2 A (Fast). C (Migratory)
Scenario 3: World War Z. First a cult classic book (by Max Brooks, 2006) and then a less well regarded movie (released 2013, directed by Marc Forster). These zombies come from a historical virus unearthed in China that then spreads throughout the world. Their features are their speed and ability to form piles to overcome obstacles. Priority Burst 2 2 Minimum = 3 A (Fast). E (Piles). Other rules: US forces have been committed overseas as the outbreak spreads: Reduce initial Air from 6 to 4, remove 2 national guard, 2 army and 2 marines to the Removed Miltary box. DEFCON starts at 3. Scenario 4: Night of the Living Dead. This is the classic 1968 movie directed by George A, Romero (and nicely remade in 1990, directed by Tom Savini). The s in this film are reanimated dead who are ultimately contained by local militia. Priority Burst 2 1 Minimum = 1 B (Slow). Other rules: The outbreak starts on the East coast when rolling for the outbreak, only roll for the row, using the 6 result for the column. Scenario 5: The Walking Dead. A series of graphic novels by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore that started in 2003 and is still going as of 2017, they have spawned a successful TV series which has been running from 2010 and is also still going in 2017. The stories start after the s have overrun USA, but there is a prequel TV series ( Fear the Walking Dead, which premiered in 2015) set during the outbreak Priority Burst 2 3 Minimum = 4 F (Hordeing).
Scenario 6: Z Nation. A TV series which has been running from 2014 and is also still going in 2017 with a spin-off movie planned. The stories start after the s have overrun USA with the plot being an attempt to get an immune survivor, Murphy, to a lab. Priority Burst 3 2 Minimum = 3 F (Hordeing). D (Evolving). Scenario 7: Van Helsing. A TV series which has been running from 2016 and is also still going in 2017. The s here are vampires. A super-volcano eruption creates a cloud of ash obscuring the sun, which allows the vampires to take over the USA. Priority 3 = Farmland Burst 3 3 Minimum = 1 C (Migratory) H (Directed) Scenario 8: Plants vs. Zombies A video game first released in 2009 with updates and spin-offs ever since. The s are attempting to take over the garden, so are clearly vegetarian. Priority 1 = Farmland 3 = City Burst 1 1 Minimum = 3 I (Feasting) Other rules: If you win, you may increase the difficulty level for the next game by increasing the strength and toughness.
