Good morning! said Ms. Stanton. Please listen, everyone. Here are your math papers from yesterday. We need to do some more work on this lesson, but you re off to a great start. 2 3
Yay! I got a dinosaur sticker! Tillie, what did you get? Yeah! I got a superhero sticker! It s none of your business, Zeb! Aw! I have to do mine again! 4 5
Tillie, is something the matter? Zeb asked me about my paper. But it s none of his business if I got a sticker or not! Ms. Stanton decided to gather the class. Come over to the board, everyone. I need to talk with you about something. 6 7
Do we get to use the glasses? Let s use the Stuff lenses! No, no, the People lenses! I want to do the Space lenses! Ok, ok, using the glasses is a great idea. Naomi, would you mind getting them? I ll go get them! 8 9
How do we decide when to share our business and when not to? Are there Rules? My mommy asks me every day what kind of sticker I got. Is that her business? Who gets to know my grades? Why do we even get stickers? Stickers... hmmm... sounds like we need our Stuff lenses! 10 11
I like my stickers. Sometimes I can t help looking at the other kids stickers. Sometimes I want to look at other people s Stuff, like their stickers. Is that OK? Yeah, but you shouldn t look, because it might hurt someone s feelings. Well, we certainly don t want anyone to get upset. How about we look through the People lenses now? 12 13
I care about People. When I see someone crying, I ask what s the matter. Is that my business? There is a difference between letting someone know you care about them and getting into someone s business. Naomi thinks everything is her business. Now I m confused. If it s none of our business, why do you put our papers up on the bulletin board? Yeah, how come that space is everyone s business? We need the Space lenses! 14 15
So, if I get this: My lunch my business Story rug everyone s business Cubby my business Art supplies everybody s business Teacher s desk... No one can look in my cubby! It s my space! What if I need a pencil from Ms. Stanton s desk? This is tricky business. While we share this classroom, we each have our own space within it, like cubbies. Kids Teacher s Everyone s Wait! Maybe the Time lenses will help. 16 17
When I was your age, school was different. My grandma makes the best cookies! Did they eat lunch and play games in that room, too? Oh! My grandma says, a long time ago schools were just one big room. So everything was everyone s business. My grandmother couldn t talk in school. 18 19
Zeb thought about what they had learned. Looking through our lenses is pretty cool! But sometimes it s hard. There s a lot to think about! What about my sister? Spaces in our classrooms... What other people are thinking and feeling... Superhero action figures? So we have to figure out whose business is our business. Stuff like my lunch? What about what happened last week? And what happened today? What did my dad think was just his business when he was young? What about class rules... 20 21
So whose business is your business? When? Where? Why? How do you decide? 22 23
