What can you study at NUI Galway? This is a list of subjects you can study at NUI Galway. Each of these subjects is divided into modules (pieces of the subject) which you can also study. Subject Details Archaeology Astronomy Biomedical Biomedical Biotechnology Biology Celtic Civilisation Archaeology is the study of the way people lived a long time ago based on the things they left behind. Astronomy is the study of the stars, planets and galaxies Biomedical Engineers design and create machines and materials to help the medical profession to diagnose disease and repair or replace damaged tissue. Biomedical is the study of life science and how the human body works. Biotechnology looks at living things (organisms) to provide food and medicine and for cleaning toxic waste or other harmful materials. Biology is the study of life and all living things. Celtic Civilisation is the study of the legacy of the Celts in the world, from the earliest times.

Chemistry Children s Civil Commerce Creative Writing Drama Electrical and Electronic Economics (Sports & Exercise) Environmental Environmental Chemistry is the science of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is the general term for the substance of which all physical objects consist. Children s is the study of children and childhood. Civil Engineers are involved in designing and building roads, bridges, tunnels, large public buildings, power stations etc. Commerce covers all areas of business money, people, marketing, systems Creative Writing teaches you how to write poetry, stories and drama. A drama is usually a performance by actors on a stage and teaches you about plays Electrical and Electronic is about technology for the future e.g. internet, mobile phones, renewable energy, medical technology Economics is the study of how goods and services, that we need to survive, are produced and consumed. Sports and Exercise Engineers design systems that improve sports and exercise. They also design gym and exercise equipment. Environmental is about making sure that water is clean for us to use and helps us look after the environment. Environmental looks at how human beings and the environment work together. 2

Family Family looks at family life and how families work together. Film Film will look at Hollywood, European and World cinema. Students will do some practical work as well. Geography Geography deals with the study of the Earth and how people and the earth live together. Global Women s Global Women s looks at how different issues around the world are experienced by women. Health Health looks at the wellbeing of each one of us. Health & Safety Health & Safety looks at how safe and healthy people are at work and how it could be improved. History History looks at events that happened in the past. Human Rights Information Technology Irish Human rights are those rights which are held by all human beings e.g. the right to life and freedom, the right to equality, etc. Information Technology looks at how different pieces of technology, e.g. computers, mobile phones, etc. work together and store information. Irish looks at the question What does it mean to be Irish? Students will study Irish culture including books, television and film, and traditional music and dance. 3

Languages English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Irish, Welsh Law Latin American Marine Marketing There are lots of different laws. Laws about: crime, companies, housing, human rights, health, disability, families, the European union, newspapers, TV, radio, entertainment, computers, land, the sea. Students study books on Latin America, arts and culture, history and politics. In addition to the sea s plants and animals, Marine looks at the sea s importance to human beings and human beings impact on the marine environment. Marketing looks at what the customer wants and the best way to make that happen. Maths Mechanical (General) (Midwifery) (Psychiatric) Maths is the study of numbers. A Mechanical Engineer designs and develops everything that qualifies as a device or machine, from an item as simple as a can opener to a modern jet aircraft. General nursing involves caring for individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. includes the promotion of health and the prevention of illness. Midwifery nursing is about helping mothers when they are pregnant and when they give birth to a baby. Psychiatric nurses help people who have mental health issues and promote good mental health and wellbeing. 4

Occupational Therapy Philosophy Physics Podiatry Occupational Therapists work with people to support them to be independent e.g. person who had a stroke, an illness or an accident. They also work with anyone who has a difficulty moving or carrying out daily tasks. Philosophy teaches about philosophers and those who think about life. Students will ask questions such as, Why am I here on this earth?, What am I meant to do with my life? and lots more. Physics is study of matter and energy and how they work together. Podiatry is about looking after people s lower limbs and feet. Politics Politics is the way we decide the rules about how we live in society. Psychology Psychology is the study of the mind and how it works. Speech and Language Therapy Sociology Speech and Language Therapists help people who have difficulty speaking and swallowing. Sociology looks at how people live in society. It looks at the things that influence people and help shape their lives. Theatre and Performance Theatre and Performance is for students who want to learn about the theatre and put on plays. 5
