RO-99G is a variation of our RO-99, in which we have added fine Molochite in order to improve handling characteristics and control water loss. Because of this addition, RO-99G also guards extremely well against thermal shock. The prepared glaze is packaged dry in a one pound plastic ready-to-use container, and makes approximately one pint of wet glaze. Bright Ice Firing Tips Rovin Bright Ice glaze fits best on our RO42 and RO42G low fire-clay bodies. We have fired all Bright Ice colors at cone 1 and as high as cone 6 on our clay. Some colors are truer than others when fired up to cone 6. Blend the Bright Ice colors or add additional oxides or mason stains to create an infinite palette. We have achieved interesting colors simply by blending equal amounts of two different Bright Ice colors. Rovin Soft Touch Underglazes Soft Touch underglaze are a low-cost, lead-free, barium-free, low-fire underglaze. The prepared underglaze is packaged dry in one pound plastic ready-to-use container and makes approximately 1 1 8 pints of liquid underglaze. Mason Stains Mason stains are colorants in frit form, which renders them insoluble, removes volatiles, and allows for better control of the final product. When used in a glaze, we generally recommend adding the stain at 5 8% by dry weight to a dry base glaze. The base glaze should contain 12 15% calcium carbonate (Whiting) and it should be free of zinc to achieve the color desired. Mason stains can also be painted on bisque as an underglaze. Experimentation is necessary to achieve the desired results, but the advantage of Mason stains is their consistent results in glaze firing. Here s a short collection of useful ceramic advice, but if you need more, our knowledgable, friendly staff is just a phone call or an email away. Convert Grams to Pounds 453.592 grams = 1 pound Divide the number of grams you need for your recipe by 453.592 to get the number of pounds you need to order. No. 1 Pottery Plaster Always store plaster in a dry environment. Do not use plaster that is lumpy as a result of improper storage. For best results weigh 100 parts plaster to 73 parts water. Avoid forming lumps by slowly adding plaster to room temperature water. Allow plaster to soak for 3 minutes and then slowly mix for 3 minutes to minimize the formation of bubbles. Setting time is affected by water temperature, age of plaster and water to plaster ratio. Sieving Glaze We reccommend sieving glazes to achieve an even mixture. An 80 mesh sieve works great for most glazes. Wiring Your Kiln If your kiln is placed in a permanent location, hard wiring is advisable to minimize risk of fire. Have a qualified electrician do the electrical work. Notes Low Fire Clay ( 06 through 2) Earthenware clay bodies remain porous and need glaze to be water-tight. Mid- and High Fire Clay ( 3 through ) Stoneware and porcelain clay bodies that are formulated to be strong and water-tight when fired to their mature temperature. Witness Cones A cone s melting point is influenced by final temperature and the rate of temperature increase (ramp). Always use witness cones to insure accuracy of firing. Drop shipping is available on some items. Custom Clay Batches A minimum order of 800 pounds and a $200 setup fee is required. Custom clay is priced per pound based on the recipe. Allow 6 to 8 weeks for production. The setup fee will be waived on orders over 3,000 pounds. Contact us for a quote. Raw Material Orders Looking to make your own clay or glaze from scratch? Most of the raw materials we carry are available in 50 pound bags, but we are happy to weigh out custom quantities. Place your order no less than 24 hours before your desired shipping or pick-up date. All materials can be weighed out to the nearest half pound. I have been using Rovin clay for decades. Rovin was there with the array of chemicals, dry clay and ceramic stains I needed while developing my colored stoneware clay.
