Mechanical Vice Grips 734B 750 N (150 lbf) 768C 10 kn (2000lbf) Thwing-Albert s Mechanical Vice Grips are designed for measuring materials up to 10 kn. They are ideal for general tensile strength testing of paper, plastics, foils, textiles and other sheet materials. An open-ended design allows easy insertion of samples wider than the grip inserts. The open space above the gripping surface provides convenient access that simplifies sample loading. Mechanical Vice Grips can be used on all of Thwing-Albert s tensile testers. Grip faces are available with smooth, serrated, diamond serrated, line contact or rubber covered surfaces. Sample Type: Flat samples of rubber, plastics, general polymers and softer metals such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel. A sample is inserted between the body and the eccentrically mounted roller with a simple lever that permits rapid loading and quick release of the sample. As the load increases, the gripping action becomes self-tightening due to cam action between the roller and the body. Samples up to 30 mm wide and 5 mm thick can be accommodated. Motorized Ring Grip, 10 kn (2250 lbf). Sample Type: Loop samples such as O Rings, rubber bands and strips cut from cylindrical items. The grip consists of anvils mounted on shafts carried on ball bearings that allow them to rotate. The lower grip is driven by a small electric motor (adjustable speed between 0 and 20 RPM) while the upper grip is mounted to the load cell and is free to rotate. Sample rotation while under load allows the stress in the sample to equalize at all points. Bollard-type Grip, 2 kn (450 lbf). Sample Type: Thin flexible samples of plastic film, paper and foils. The grip has a 12 mm (0.5 in) diameter bollard which can be steel or rubber coated. The sample is wrapped around the bollard and initial clamping is provided by a tension spring. Self-tightening occurs as the load increases. The sample must be flexible enough to wrap around the bollard and conform to its surface. Split Drum Grip, 10 kn (2,250 lbf). Sample Type: Seatbelt, webbing and general belting samples. The sample is loaded by inserting the end of the material in the slot of the drum and wrapped around the drum one full rotation. Operating on a bollard and clamp principle, the bollard has a 20 mm (0.8 in) diameter with a smooth groove to center the sample. Material being tested must be flexible enough with a maximum diameter of 2 mm (0.08 in) to ensure a secure hold. The clamp washers float on the clamp spindle to protect the sample from pretension or damage while clamping. Rope Grip, 10 kn (2250 lbf). Sample Type: Polypropylene, nylon, hemp and manila ropes Bollard-type grip with a manual vice for clamping the end of the sample. The bollard has a 150 mm (6 in) diameter which gives a 10:1 ratio of maximum rope diameter to bollard diameter.
