CHAOS TM Dynamic Junction Control Systems

In the junction CHAOS is operational, average waiting time of the drivers in the junction is minimized. Dynamic Junction Control System CHAOS TM, which is named as the dynamic junction control system reduces the average waiting time of the vehicles by ensuring the dynamic control of instant light durations in signalized junctions depending on the number of vehicles. CHAOS TM is integrated into the junction control devices in signalized junctions and ensures automatic determination of green light durations. With Smart Vehicle Counting Camera, VIERO, real time counting of vehicles in junctions is made using image processing techniques and vehicle density data are obtained. Vehicle density data is transferred to CENTRIS, the Dynamic Junction Control Unit integrated externally in the junction control device. With CHAOS TM... Traffic in junctions and junctions between the junctions is made more fast-moving Duration of vehicles to wait in junctions, thus the time they pass in traffic is minimized Poisonous gas emission and noise pollution are reduced and contribution is made to prevent environmental pollution. Fuel consumption is reduced and contribution is made to the national economy With safe durations generated by the system, the number of red light violations and traffic accidents is reduced. Vehicle density data transferred to the CENTRIS unit is analyzed instantly by the system and light durations in junctions are optimized continuously. Thus, durations of vehicles to wait in traffic lights are minimized. 2

Intersection Management Based on Vehicle Density with CHAOS TM Parallel to the increase in population, number of vehicles in traffic increases. With the increase in vehicle use, especially in major cities, many problems resulted from heavy traffic should be prevented emergently. Traffic intensity causes increase in transportation time, high energy costs with high fuel consumption and environmental pollution with exhaust gas emission. CHAOS TM was developed to prevent these and other similar situations. CHAOS TM which made important contributions to the issues of improvement of signalization durations and traffic regulation has been realized in many cities in our city. Dynamic Junction Management System CHAOS TM is compatible with all signalization systems and in points in which is it is applied, reduces the time lost in traffic and fuel cost importantly especially in pick hours (like between 17:00-18:00). Contribution is also made to the solution of traffic problem when this system is integrated in the junctions with lights. When the system is commissioned, the time lost in traffic by drivers is reduced importantly. When existing statistics were examined, it was determined that red light violations and accidents decreased at the rate of 1/3 in signalized junctions in which the system is applied. Registered Under Turkish Patent Institute Examination Patent belonging to the system titled A Signal Program Optimization System and Management was registered with number 2010/10391 and date 13.12.2010 by TPI. 5

Traffic Control Center Software, METIS The Capabilities of METIS Imaging of Instant Signal Order in Junctions Instant Intervention in Junction Reflection of Junction Images on Digital Map Mapping the Traffic Density Map of the City and Publication Transfer of Data Obtained from the junctions to Data Base Realization of Traffic Analyses Based on Every Archived Datum Taking Past Signal Reports Accessing and Programming Junctions Control Devices in Junctions Imaging of Errors that may Occur in Junctions and Remote Intervention in Related Devices when Necessary Required Programs and Operation System Oracle Data Base Apache HTTP Server Tomcat Application Server JDK 7 Traffic Control Center Software METIS, as a part of CHAOS TM System is a completely web based control center software which is based on digital map, which establishes live connection with junctions in accordance with international communication standards and maintains communication for 24/7, which is capable of remote junction control and which can realize statistical analyses according to current and past traffic data. Requirements and Hardware I7,3 Ghz Processor 12 GB RAM 4 TB Permanent Memory METIS, which provides a cost efficient solution with the opportunity to provide remote access for municipalities, ensured reduction of work force and costs in demand collection, maintenance and malfunction management, thus it is evaluated as a system increasing efficiency. 6

Signal Coordination with CHAOS TM Systems which can Communicate with Each Other The benefit provided by the dynamic junction management in a single junction increases by the implementation of the system in consecutive intersections. The property of CHAOS TM system to communicate with another CHAOS TM system enables signal coordination between consecutive junctions. Using the information in how many seconds the vehicles passing from one junction reach the next junction, CHAOS TM system is enabled to work in order to realize signal coordination in more than one junction instead of local junction management. Thus, it is possible that vehicles passing from one junction pass the net intersection by either not waiting in the red light or waiting for a very short time. Priority Passage of Vehicles Thanks to the Priority Passage of Vehicles Module within the CHAOS TM system, it is possible to give priority to Ambulance and Firefighter vehicles approaching to the junction. System receives location information from the GPS module integrated previously to the vehicle desired to have passage priority. Priority passage algorithm working on METIS uses this location information to determine the direction of the vehicles approaching to the junction and changes the signal order in the junction instantly. Thus, the conflict occurring during the pass of ambulance and firefighter vehicles is minimized and possible accidents are prevented. RESULT Thanks to CHAOSTM systems applied in more than 200 junctions across the country, average waiting duration of vehicles in related junctions has been reduced at about %30 and priority pass of vehicles like ambulances and firefighters is made possible. Besides, thanks to METIS, the junctions have become accessible, serviceable and observable from Traffic Control Center. Based on the duration of 5 years that have passed since the assembly of the first system to the junction, it was seen that the number of damaged accidents occurred in the junctions with system decreased at the rate of 1/3. 7
