About Company The history of the plywood factory has started at the end of the XIX century when the Society of mechanical wood processing was founded in Orzhiv, Rivne region, Ukraine. Over a period of more than 125 years ODEK has gained invaluable experience in birch plywood production in particular. Nowadays ODEK is a modern enterprise, which is equipped with a high-technology equipment for plywood production with capacity of 85 000 m 3 per year. It currently employs over 1 400 of workers. We use high quality raw materials for plywood manufacturing: russian & ukrainian birch logs from the best forest areas; covering phenolic & melamine films of Finnish, Spanish and German manufacturers; polish resins. ODEK exports it s plywood to nearly 30 countries of the world, including: The Netherlands, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Slovakia, Moldova, Slovenia, Norway, France, Romania, Cyprus, United Kingdom, Lithuania, etc. ODEK shared 50% of Ukrainian plywood production in 2010, 48% in 2011 and 2012. Domestic sales are slightly above 20%, while almost 80% of plywood is exported. Around 65% of total output is film-faced plywood.
About plywood Multi-layers as well as inter perpendicularity of wood fibers in adjacent plies provides plywood boards with strength in different directions. The grade of raw plywood is defined by quality of exterior layer of veneer. The type of film-faced (overlaid) plywood is defined by the surface appearance. Characteristics: birch, alder, combi (birch, alder) plywood; glued with phenol-formaldehyde (exterior) or urea (interior) resins; waterproof. Application: building; auto-, wagon-, container building; furniture industry; production of standard houses; ship building. Standard sizes: thickness: 4mm to 40mm; dimensions: 1250x2500mm / 2500x1250mm / 1220x2440mm / 2440x1220mm. Raw plywood grades: B/BB, S/BB, BB/BB, BB/CP, BB/C, CP/CP, CP/C, C/C. Film-faced plywood types: smooth/smooth, mesh-wire/smooth, mesh-wire/mesh-wire, hexa/smooth. Special types of plywood: fire-proof plywood; overlaid with sliced veneers plywood (oak, cherry, beech, etc.); plywood overlaid with HPL; plywood with CNC machining (drilling, edges machining, shapes cutting); cutto-size plywood (any sizes, smaller than standard).
About manufacture The quality of ODEK product is ensured with a high-professional level of the production personnel and well-organized control system. Having all needed equipment, the mill s laboratory carries daily control of different indices of the product quality. Raw plywood Grade B the quality of surface is foreseen for transparent and semi-transparent covering, for varnishing and toning with dyes with higher quality requirements. In grade B light sound knots up to diameter of 10 mm, dark sound knots up to diameter of 6 mm are permitted. The presence of sound knots in small quantity makes the structure of wood more essential. Non-inosculated knots and open holes of dropped-out knots are not permitted. The non-inosculated splits in grade B are not permitted as well. Defects in structure of the wood should not exceed 10% of the panel surface. Grade S the quality of the surface is intended for covering with transparent or semi-transparent materials, varnish, toning with dyes. The following defects are permitted in grade S: noninosculated knots and open holes of dropped-out knots by size up to 3 mm and open splits by width up to 2 mm in case of their cementing. Closed cracks by length up to 200 mm. Light sound knots by diameter up to 20 mm, dark sound knots by diameter up to 10 mm. The surface of S grade can be edge-jointed with selection of jointed pieces by the same colour. The following defects are not allowed in grade S: veneer patches, false core. The sound discoloration should not exceed 15% of the panel surface. Grade BB is foreseen for treatment with paints and semi-transparent materials, for covering with sliced veneer of valued species of wood. The following defects are permitted in grade BB: veneer patches, light sound knots, dark sound knots by size not more than 20 mm, open holes out of non-inosculated knots by size not more than 6 mm, closed cracks up to length of 200 mm, open cracks by width up to 2 mm. Sound discoloration, false core should not exceed 25% of the panel surface.
Grade CP is used for covering with opaque and film coatings, for treatment with paints. As to quality, the surface is worth than in grade BB. Light sound knots permitted. Dark sound knots permitted with crack by width not more than 1.5 mm. Non-inosculated knots and holes of dropped out knots permitted up to the size of 6 mm. Also, closed and open cracks permitted. In the grade CP the false core should not exceed 50% of panel surface, the sound discoloration 50%. Veneer patches permitted without limitation. The double veneer patches permitted as well. The veneer of CP grade can consist of several veneer stripes glues on edge. Grade C is the cheapest among the plywood grades, which is used in building constructions when the appearance of plywood top layers plays the second role. The following defects are allowed in grade C: light and dark sound knots without limitation of size and quantity; partly inosculated, non-inosculated knots and holes from dropped out knots allowed by size not more than 40 mm without limitation of length and quantity, closed cracks and open cracks by width not more than 10 mm without limitation of length and quantity; veneer patches with single or double inserts, veneer overlaps, pinchers, cratering and sanding through. In inner plies lack of veneer by width up to 10 mm is allowed. The lack of veneer at the edges should not exceed 5 mm. It is allowed the knots cementing, cracks by size not more than 60 mm. False core, chemical discoloration, brown colour, stains are allowed as well.
Film-faced plywood The following films are used: 40/120g phenolic dark-brown, light-brown, green, black; 80/220g phenolic dark-brown; 40/120g mixed transparent; 80/200g melamine white; 90/220g melamine grey; 80/170g melamine beech; 80/240g melamine red, blue, yellow; 90/190g ready-primed for painting. In order to reduce water absorbing, edges of plywood boards are painted with acrylic paint according to tint of corresponding coating or other one on the customer demand. The surface of film faced plywood is resistant against water action, different chemical agents and solvents. It differs by hardness and polish, cleanable, non-toxic. The quality of plywood film facing is evaluated as uniform. According to the technical requirements DIN EN 438 part 1 and 2 the product has index 3 High wear resistant. The surface of plywood is film faced in order to give it high resistance to natural and chemical conditions. Film faced plywood is irreplaceable in case of production of wear-proof surfaces (making of concrete shuttering), roofs, walls and flooring of buildings, storage facilities; is used in auto-, wagon-, shipbuilding, furniture industry. Special paper-based, soaked with phenolic or melamine resins, films are used for overlay of birch and alder plywood. There are different colours of film. Three types of film surface: smooth, mesh-wire and hexa are available.
