STEP 1: PREPARE THE AREA a. Remove the weatherstrip from the jamb. Remove the corner pad, if present. b. Pry off the brickmould by cutting the caulk line with a utility knife on both sides of the brickmould along its entire length. STEP 2: REMOVE THE DAMAGED AREA 90 < 8" a. Mark a horizontal line on the jamb, no more than 8" from the bottom of the sill. If this is on the hinge side, ensure the mark is made several inches below load bearing area. b. Use a circular saw to cut into the jamb at the mark made. Set the blade depth to 1-1/4" and make several straight-in plunge cuts along the pencil line. c. Cut behind the jamb to cut into any fasteners that may be securing the jamb to the stud. d. Dislodge the jamb piece to remove. Scrape and vacuum out any wood rot remaining in the resulting gap. 2 of 5
STEP 3: SIZE THE NEW JAMB BOTTOM X X Measure the height at the end (Y 1 ) a. Determine the height of the jamb needed to be replaced. Measure and cut the end of the new door jamb using a miter saw for precision cuts. b. Measure the height of the sill on the exterior. Measure the height of the sill here (Y 2 ) Y 2 Y 1 c. Determine the height of the sill along the side, right next to the sill cap. d. Mark those two points on the thicker side of the jamb. Y 1 on the exterior edge and Y 2 on the edge closest to the weatherstrip slot. Top View Cut through the jamb to be flush with rabbet Rabbet Dado Cut e. Connect the points created in Step 3d and cut along that line to create the dado. Cut into the jamb ONLY until you reach the plane of the rabbet. 3 of 5
STEP 4: INSTALL AND SEAL THE NEW JAMB BOTTOM a. Place the sized jamb into the space to ensure it fits properly. Using a pencil, outline the sill against the jamb. b. Remove the cut jamb piece from the space and fill in the outlined "sill space" with high quality exterior silicone as shown above. Top View Stud Shims NOTE: The number of fasteners will vary depending on the length of the replaced piece. Jamb! The installation requires a minimum of two sets of shims: one on the bottom to compress it against the sill and another close to the joint with the existing frame. c. Slide the jamb piece with the caulk applied into the cut space. Use at least two sets of shims to ensure the jamb piece is aligned with the plane of the existing jamb. Be sure to put the shims in opposite! directions to ensure the jamb piece does not rotate. Sand down this seam d. Once the jamb piece is secured against the sill, fasten it into the frame with screws. Cut any extended shims to be flush with the jamb. Fill gaps behind new jamb piece e. Fill the seam with exterior grade wood filler or putty. Sand down the seam between the existing jamb and new jamb piece to blend them. f. Using a Window and Door Insulating Foam Sealant, fill any gaps behind the new jamb. 4 of 5
STEP 5: REINSTALL THE BRICKMOULD Old Brickmould Z 1 New Brickmould 45 Z 1 a. Cut a long strip of flashing tape to cover the gap between the door jamb and exterior sheeting of the house. b. Measure the outside edge of the old brickmould (Z 1 ). Mark the new brickmould at Z 1 and cut it down at a 45 angle as shown above. 8" 8" c. Fasten the brickmould using 2" Brad Nails, about 8" apart. Expect some expanding foam squeeze-out! in the bottom corner. Use a putty knife to wipe off the excess foam while it's uncured. d. Caulk the seam between the sill and jamb and around the brickmould using a high quality exterior silicone. STEP 6: REINSTALL THE WEATHERSEALING COMPONENTS a. Once the area has been repainted and dries, install new weatherstripping along the full length of the jamb. b. Install a new corner pad on the bottom of the jamb, right above the sill cap. 5 of 5
