O c tober 2009 October s Meeting Wednesday, Oct 14th @ 7:00 pm Spanish Oaks Clubhouse 2201 Spanish Oaks Drive Las Vegas, Nevada Board Meeting Wednesday, Oct 14th @ 5:30 pm Spanish Oaks Clubhouse October s Program Holiday Greeting Cards For Our Troops Overseas Our October meeting features a session on creating watercolor greeting cards, facilitated by Barbara Stanton. Members are invited to bring their paints, brushes and imagination to create a holiday theme card which will be sent overseas to our troops serving in Afghanistan and/or Iraq. The society will provide the makings for one card, which includes a 4x6 sheet of watercolor paper (140 or 300 lb stock), envelope, card stock & double sided adhesive tape. If you wish to create additional cards, please bring 4x6 sheets of watercolor paper of your choosing. Please join us for an evening of fun and creativity. Look forward to seeing you there. President s Message What a wonderful turnout we had for our September meeting. Membership Chairman Pat Caspary said that the count was in the 70s. The Joan McKasson demonstration was a joy to watch. I thank Jan Butler for her generous donation toward that demonstration. I also thank Betts Baepler for her very generous donation to replace funds used to purchase the Stephen Quiller painting that will be auctioned off in 2010. Thanks to Sara Gaiero, General Manager of Dick Blick for bringing everyone present samples of their watercolor paints and coupons. Tom Lynch was in town recently for a book signing and sent us a signed print, a video and some of his products via his friend Bill Fravel. We have added the video to our video library and will add the rest to our raffle items. Thanks, Tom and Bill. Everyone who attended the Ed Hoag Workshop at Elida Kidman s home had a great time. Plus $665.00 was raised for the Scholarship Fund. Barbara Yoerg added to the donation which brought the total to $715.00. Thanks to everyone. Congratulations to all who have been juried into the 2009 Fall Show. I look forward to the reception when all your beautiful paintings are on display. We have two new signature members in the show. They are Ed Klein and Elena Wherry. Vina Curtis, President Just A Reminder You are now able to download your full color monthly newsletter online from www.nvws.org If you would still like to receive a printed black & white newsletter through the USPS, please call Louise Gillespie at 658-2931. Box 27224, Las Vegas, NV 89126 Coming June 2010 Workshops Painting Experience Workshop Look for more details in upcoming months Joan McKasson s workshop, which was held September 10th-13th was highly successful. Every artist that attended was able to walk away with a couple of very creative paintings and a better knowledge of the abstract underpainting technique. The group also enjoyed experimenting with Joan s vast array of watercolor supplies and collage materials. A very Special Thank You to Joan McKasson for the fabulous workshop and to Sharon Menary along with Barbara Stanton and Ed Hoag for putting this wonderful workshop together. See more information about Betsy Dillard Stroud at www.worldofwatercolor.com/artists/bdstroud/intro.htm For additional information about workshops, contact Sharon Menary at www.thestudioforartists@yahoo.com or (702) 463-2454 Shows and Exhibits You and your guests are cordially invited to the opening reception of the 2009 Fall Show of the Nevada Watercolor Society West Sahara Library Art Gallery Thursday, October 8th, 2009 new location 6 to 8 pm Awards at 6:45 pm 9600 West Sahara Avenue, Las Vegas, NV Congratulations to all the artists who took the challenge and submitted paintings in the Fall Show. There were 79 paintings submitted by our members to be judged by Joan McKasson. On Thursday evening Joan was able to spend quite a bit of time reviewing all the paintings and selecting 40 to be in the Fall Show. She stated that subject matter was not important in her decision, but the 40 accepted paintings each had qualities of a good watercolor painting. She then pulled out approximately 10-12 paintings for another review and decided on the eight awards - Best of Show, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place, a Creative Award and 3 Honorable Mentions. Hope everyone will be able to come to the reception and view the exhibit at the library. It will certainly inspire you!! October 2009 Nevada Watercolor Society pg 2

wfws.org WFWS Entries Due 11/15/09 Western Federation of Watercolor Societies By now you have received the Western Federation prospectus (in the September newsletter) and might have a few questions: Q. What is the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies? A. The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS) was set up in 1974 and sponsors an annual juried exhibition that is hosted each year by a different regional society. Today WFWS includes over 5000 artists from 11 watercolor societies. Nevada Watercolor Society is proud to be one of the participating groups. Q. Why bother to enter Western Fed? A. Being accepted into a WFWS exhibit is a prestigious honor. If your goals as a watercolor artist include pushing yourself to a higher level of competition, then Western Fed is a great stepping stone toward entering the national competitions. Q. I don t have a computer. Where can I get a digital photo to enter? A. In years past, we have had someone available to take digital photos at the meeting. This year, it will be even simpler. You may submit a good quality slide or photo of your painting along with the appropriate paperwork. We will scan the photo and turn it into the required digital image. Kathy Christensen, our WF delegate along with Ed Hoag (alternate delegate) are here to help you. Just make sure it is a good 4x6 professionally developed photo - no prints from a copier, please. Q. When do we host the annual exhibit? A. The Nevada Watercolor Society will be hosting Western Fed in 2012. The juror will be Gerald Brommer. If you would like to help with the planning of this event, please contact Kathy at 897-8874 or sdc8339@stlv.net. Paintouts and Critique Group Critique Group Meets Monday mornings 10 am to 12 noon at Desert Art Supply 2750 N Green Valley Pkwy Henderson, NV 89014 You can bring a painting or 2 that you are working on and have the benefit of receiving a critique to help improve that painting. You can also take part in the group without bringing a painting and benefit by someone else s critique. For additional information about the Critique Group, contact Bill Fravel at (702) 468-6041 or billfravel@aol.com or www.billfravel.com Thanks to Bill Fravel who met with Tom Lynch at Desert Art Supply one day last month and received one of Tom Lynch s video for our video library, one signed print and some samples of Frederick Watercolor Canvas (which will be raffled off sometime later this year). Paint Outs Details pending For additional information about Paintouts, contact Bill Busch at (702) 878-3602 Because watercolor actually moves on the paper, it is the most active of all mediums, almost a performance art.
