Brethren; Message From The Master Recently I had the pleasure of visiting the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington D. C. This was a very moving experience. The museum was full of people, but it was like you were there alone, very little conversation you could tell everyone was very moved by what they saw. I visited a concentration camp (Dachau) in Germany several years ago and experienced the same trying to understand how this (Holocaust) could have happened. Chickahominy Lodge No. 286 A.F. & A. M. Chartered February 16, 1905 Trestleboard August, 2017 Shortly after Adolph Hitler came to power in 1933, he issued two decrees. One provided for Nazi control over the educational process. The second made membership in a Masonic Fraternity a crime. Hitler viewed Freemasonry as part of "the Jewish conspiracy" and wanted it eradicated. At that time, there were 885,000 Masons in good standing in Germany. Adolf Eichmann, who would later play an important role in Hitler's " final solution," raided the Grand Lodge of Germany and confiscated all of their records including the names and addresses of 880,000 German Masons. Lodge property was confiscated and Eichmann secretly issued orders that Masons should be put to death. His orders were followed. Many of the Freemasons who were arrested were also Jews and/or members of the political opposition, it is not known how many individuals were placed in Nazi concentration camps and targeted only because they were Freemasons. Some former lodge members, as individuals, participated in or were associated with German resistance circles; and some were arrested and murdered during World War II. P.O. Message From The Master (Continued) During this period in history, the Forget-Me-Not was chosen as an emblem of identity of a Mason, replacing the square and compasses. This was a Masonic secret that was never broken. Throughout the whole era of Nazi domination, little blue Forget-Me-Knot s appeared on lapels in cities and even in concentration camps, worn by brothers whose love of freedom, learning, and Freemasonry remained strong even under oppressive Nazi rule. This is just a small amount of Masonic History during World War II. I encourage each of you to visit the Holocaust Museum and research this subject. There may be some contradictions in articles published. You will just have to let your conscience be your guide. OFFICERS 2017 Worshipful Master Gregory B. SPECIAL NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS We still need volunteers for our October and December Stated dinners. Please consider putting together a dinner. The Lodge will reimburse you for your out of pocket expenses. Please contact Wor. Joe Rose if you have questions. Also remember that wives and potential candidates are always welcome to attend our dinners. Wor. Greg recently again appealed to the membership for us to learn the Degree work. We need backups in virtually all positions, especially the Master Mason Second Part. If you would like to learn or participate in any of this degree work, please contact Wor. Ted Holm. Even if you do not participate with a role in the Degrees at least come to the practices and Degrees so you can observe the work and support these new Masons in their Masonic Journey. We could surely use more Catechism Coaches. If you are interested in becoming one, please contact Wor. Ted Holm. SPECIAL NOTES AND REMINDERS Chickahominy Lodge No. 286 A. F. & A. M. Trestleboard 1. Wor. Ted Holm is still conducting the weekly Certificate Training. Classes are held every Sunday from 3:00 p. m. until 5:00 p. m. If you want to learn something else, please let Wor. Ted know. He is always willing to teach us anything we want. ATTENTION Our August 8 th Stated Meeting will be held at the Masonic Home of Virginia located at 500 Masonic Lane, Richmond VA Dinner 5:30 p.m. Meeting 7:00 p.m. Page 4 of 6
