ARC-1389 Summary information Repository: Title: ID: Date: Physical description: Dates of creation, revision and deletion: University of British Columbia Library Rare Books and Special Collections ARC-1389 1942-1961 (date of creation) 24 cm of textual records Administrative history / Biographical sketch Note Gladstone Murray was a journalist, speaker and lobbyist who was very critical of the activities and goals and aims of the CCF (Cooperative Commonwealth Federation) and all other socialist parties. He was the head of the Responsible Enterprise, founded in 1942, an association of about 100 Canadian industrial and business companies whose goal was to protect the free market, the rights of private property, and the economic system of competitive capitalism in Canada. The association hosted an annual dinner each year, wherein Murray delivered a speech reviewing the progress which had been made towards these ends. The association also published a magazine, The Outlook, bulletins, and cartoons. Scope and content The fonds consists of records created and compiled by Gladstone Murray and the Responsible Enterprise association. Records are related to the annual dinners (1959-1961) put on by the association, as well as printed materials published or collected by the association. In order to reflect this the fonds is divided into two series: Annual Dinner series and Printed Materials series. Record types in the Annual dinner series include minutes, correspondence and reports. Arrangement Some files in this fonds were originally bound in 3 ring binders and housed in two separate boxes. In December 2017 the archivist removed the materials from these binders and rehoused the contents. As a result of this the physical extent of the fonds decreased by 12 centimeters. Other notes Publication status: published Series descriptions Mailing lists, correspondence and reports Scope and content: Series consists of records created in relation to the hosting of Responsible Enterprise annual dinners. Individuals in attendance represented banks, oil and gas corporations, food and tobacco companies, and other members of the private sector. Annual reports given by Murray reflect on the years' success in progressing the agenda of the private sector. Record types include mailing lists of invitees, correspondence with dinner organizers and invited individuals, and copies of the annual reports given by Gladstone Murray at these dinners.
