IRELAND S TIDIEST TOWN WINNER S REPORT Letterkenny, Co. Donegal Community Involvement & Planning / Rannpháirtíocht an Phobail & Pleanáil: Letterkenny is welcome to the 2015 National SuperValu TidyTowns Competition; thank you for your well organised submission which includes clear project locations, plan summary and Strategic Review. The towns designation as an Age Friendly Town with its goal of enhancing quality of life for all age groups is impressive and well informed; it is inspiring to note the participation of a variety of age groups in the organisation of walks and other features. The Community Allotments and Gardens are excellent initiatives and no doubt enhance Community Relations as does the Garden Trail. Traditional and contemporary communication methods appear to be a successful combination and the Town Team facilitated by a Town Centre Commercial Manager will successfully guide Letterkenny s future development Built Environment and Streetscape / An Timpeallacht Thógtha agus Sráid-dreacha: Letterkenny s built environment is attractive with the majority of buildings in the public, private, commercial and institutional realm presented to a high standard. Streetscapes in the centre of the town are enhanced by well maintained street furniture, orderly car parking and (in some instances) no overhead wirescape. Heritage buildings enjoy good conservation and it is a pleasure to take the Heritage Trail. Two buildings forming each corner of Church Lane are beautifully painted and the Market Square is attractively presented also. Too many shopfronts feature roller shutters to the roadside of their window and these have a negative visual impact on their respective streetscapes. While it is appreciated that these are a security feature there are alternatives which could and should be explored for a town of Letterkenny s stature in the competition. The Public Services Centre is an attractive development and its roof is an unusual and intriguing feature. The Donegal County Committee Childcare premises is beautifully painted and the Donegal County Museum building is a handsome stone Heritage building, patches of long grass around the floodlights should be kept at bay. Both the Fire Station and the Credit Union premises look well. Projects completed for this year s competition are commendable and thank you for the before and after photographs. An Grianan Theatre and Conwell Parish Church deserve special commendations. Landscaping and Open Spaces / Tírdhreachú agus Spásanna Oscailte: The newly developed Urban Garden is beautiful and is an appropriate memorial to a much loved and admired TidyTowns volunteer. Cathedral Square looks magnificent with its landscaping street furniture car parking arrangements & more. Green open spaces on the Glenties road are beautifully managed with neat hedgerow and attractive street furniture. Wire & post fencing to a site on the Ramelton Road could be planted for greater enclosure. Trees along the Neil T Blaney Road are establishing themselves well, public seating and an absence of overhead wirescape are admirable features of this road. The roundabout at the sports grounds is nicely landscaped as indeed are all roundabouts seen by the adjudicator in Letterkenny! Is it possible to feature container planting on the Oatfield roundabout? Lots of container plants within the centre are a notable feature of the townscape. 30,557 summer plants planted is a staggering number which reflects the strength of community spirit and pride in Letterkenny. 19

IRELAND S TIDIEST TOWN 20 Wildlife, Habitats and Natural Amenities / Fiadhúlra, Gnáthóga agus Taitneamhachtaí Nádúrtha: One of Letterkenny s most attractive features is its many parks and sports facilities. BallyMcCool Park is magnificent especially in respect of its roadside treatment, and Ballyboe Park is noted favourably also. The Town Park is a wonderful amenity, it should be signposted on approaching it from the roadside and information with finger post signage could be provided throughout the town centre. The Town Park map and the information sign on the Nature Trail could both be upgraded; the existence of the Nature Trail itself could be highlighted more within the town with appropriate signage and information and signposted within the park itself. The Active Letterkenny Trail is well signposted. The entrance to the sports grounds Pairc Dhomhnaill is impressive and the spectator stands are nicely presented; presumably the stone banks inside the entrance will be grassed / landscaped. More playing fields along Pearse Road are favourably noted. Well done on the update to the biodiversity plan; the Swift Nest Box Project is commendable as is the Gardening for Wildlife initiative. The Invasive Species Audit/ Alert is invaluable for the biodiversity status of Letterkenny and the appeal to the community regarding the Wildlife Survey is laudable. The Flora & Fauna map should be installed at a number of locations around the town. Sustainable Waste and Resource Management / Bainistiú Acmhainní agus Dramhaíola Inbhuanaithe: The Letterkenny Tidy Towns Non Paper Communication initiative is a fine example of promoting the prevention of waste at source. The seminar on Sustainable Waste and Resource Management is an excellent way to communicate practical tips and advice and it is good to note the large attendance. The promotion of Home Composting, Green Homes and Sustainable Travel is invaluable in raising awareness of these issues. The Food Bank initiative is inspirational in many ways and it is hoped that it will thrive well into the future. It is good to note the drive towards accreditation to the ISO 9001 standard by the Letterkenny Business Community. Try to calculate the effectiveness of your activities to facilitate a measureable reduction of waste produced by the community and allow feedback on this. Tidiness and Litter Control / Slachtmhaireacht agus Rialú Bruscair: The recycling centre on Neil T Blayney Road is being well maintained. Litter control in Letterkenny is excellent for a town of its size; a small amount of litter was noted in Burnside Park probably due to a group of full to capacity large bins located to the rear of apartment blocks and birds pulling at them. A single plastic bottle was noted in the Market Square. It is good to note the development of the site across from the Radisson Blu Hotel for retail and its excellent presentation. There are still a number of undeveloped sites within the environs of the town which need attention. It was a pleasure to note recently planted hedgerow to the roadside of an undeveloped site on The Neil T Blaney Road. Bonner Engineering looks quite neat though some thought might be given to planting its fencing. A vacant property on Church Lane has been beautifully treated to its window and door apertures. No doubt the toppled lamp standard in the verge near the entrance to the Dry Arch Business Park will be reinstated shortly. The Stop the Dog Fouling initiative and others campaigns are favourably acknowledged. Residential Streets & Housing Areas / Sráideanna Cónaithe & Ceantair Tithíochta: A number of roadside boundary walls in the Oldtown area and on the Glenties road are in need of refurbishment. Most estates on Circular Road are nicely presented and the entrance to Glenwood Park was admired. Two residential properties on Lower Main Street

IRELAND S TIDIEST TOWN need refurbishment, a further two on High Road were admired for their presentation. The overall standard of presentation under this heading is of a high order no doubt due to the Cleaner Community Campaign, the Estate Competition, participation in the Spring Clean Event and other events. Your adjudicator is especially impressed by the Nature and Heritage Walks offered to and availed of by residents. Approach Roads, Streets & Lanes / Bóithre Isteach, Sráideanna & Lánaí: Approach roads to Letterkenny are beautifully presented in all respects and roundabouts are beautifully landscaped. Road and footpath surfaces are good overall with few exceptions and those on the Glenties road have seen recent refurbishment. Road signage is clear however a sign on the High Road was almost completely swallowed by foliage. Street furniture enjoys good maintenance generally, one exception being the bridge rails marking the entrance to Oldtown. The Church Lane project is exciting, we look forward to further developments here. Rosemount was admired and the Adopt a Road initiative is acknowledged favourably. De Valera Road features maturing trees with neat verges, mature hedgerow and good road and footpath surfaces, the Neil T Blaney road was equally admired. Concluding remarks: It has been a very real pleasure to witness the development of Lettekenny over the past few decades: the town can now boast a handsome townscape complemented by high quality amenity features to enhance quality of life opportunities for the entire community. That all of this has been achieved whilst at the same time respecting the needs of wildlife and facilitating bio-diversity is highly commendable! Congratulations to all the Tidy Towns volunteers and supporters past and present. Second Round Adjudication: It was a pleasure to visit your lovely town and spend a few hours amongst your community. I must compliment your committee on the excellent entry form and the maps supplied. I was impressed with the community allotments behind the timber fence at the side of the Pastoral Centre with plenty potatoes growing there plus other vegetables with the composting taking place at the side of the hill. Unfortunately I was unable to find the community gardens described as behind St Fiachra s Training Centre & St Conal s; I asked a few people in the grounds behind St Conal s but nobody knew about them. The roads, footpaths plus the cycle lanes are in good condition and the roundabouts are splendid all over the town and give a great welcoming feeling of freshness and colour; the workmanship on all these roundabouts was of a high degree displaying imagination, skill and energy. Landscaping was outstanding with nearly all available spaces tastily converted to well maintained lawns, shrubberies and flower beds. An example of this is the little enclosure at the back of the bus stop in Cathedral Square developed by Letterkenny Community Heritage group in 2014. Then we travelled over the road to the Famine Graveyard enclosed with a sturdy traditional stone wall and containing great mature trees with names of the trees on timber free standing notices. Garden seats add to the enjoyment with the interesting commemorative stone In memory of those laid to rest here who died in Letterkenny Workhouse during the famine years. There are excellent mature trees all over the area and you are complimented for the continuation of this policy of planting so many young trees. Then there were the larger formal public parks starting at the area around the Polestar and reaching over to the Tourist Office with the large grassed spaces and lovely flower beds plus shrubs. The people of Letterkenny can enjoy extensive well maintained town parks as outlined in the entry form at Ballyboe, Ballymacool, Kilmacrenan and Linear Park and I admired these parks as I travelled around. A children s playground plus some sports fields are excellent facilities for the town. The new planting on the Neil T Blaney road is well established and will 21

IRELAND S TIDIEST TOWN 22 add further to the aesthetics at this point as well as providing food and shelter for the wildlife. I loved the butterfly garden and bug hotel with a variety of suitable vegetation like buddleia, honeysuckle, chives, strawberries plus many others. A few Large Whites entertained us flying around. The recycling centre was well presented at the Public Service Centre on Neil T Blaney road with a public notice giving details of Seven Steps to reduce our waste to make Letterkenny a cleaner and greener town. There is a most impressive built environment in Letterkenny from the traditional old style shops which are very pretty to the modern outlets around the town. For instance there is a nice group of shops across from Bonner Engineering including Sony Centre with good urban trees on the footpath outside. Then we enjoyed the retail park the location of some large outlets such as Dunnes Stores, Homebase and Halfords plus others which are surrounded by substantial car parking facilities. There are wonderful streetscapes around the town notably in the Cathedral Square with nice views of the splendid St Eunan s Cathedral and Conwal Parish Church which stands out with the excellent restoration of its spire displaying great workmanship of skilled stone masons. I loved the grey door and well kept graveyard which are enclosed with an outstanding traditional stone boundary wall. Attractive containers of flowers added sparkle and interest to this area. The work seems to be finished on the restoration of An Grianan Theatre, it looked really well and it too was adorned with lovely floral arrangements and street furniture. Contemporary developments such as John F Loughery & Associates, the Art Centre, the Garda Station and Gallagher s Hotel fit in well with the older structures. I admired the Court House, Presbyterian Church and it is pleasing to see the Workhouse retains its original identity and now serves as the County Museum plus the extensive St Eunans College up at the top of the town. Reading your impressive entry form we see a huge commitment in those wonderful photographs showing many people proud to be involved to make Letterkenny a cleaner and therefore a lovely place to live in and visit, and we see examples of this all around the town with for instance the men painting the houses in Church Lane, and every place was so tidy and orderly. The first round adjudicator has given you a comprehensive report with an increase in marks and it is my pleasant duty to confirm this. Well done for a splendid effort.
