Step 1: Cut out the pattern (A) Print (set scale to 100%) and cut out the paper pattern. Glue it onto a piece of construction paper. (B) Cut around the pattern again. (C) Put the pattern on the back of the solid-colored fabric, and trace it with a pencil. Cut the fabric along the line. Repeat with the patterned fabric. (D) Check with the photo to make sure that you have everything: 2 pieces of cut fabric, 2 buttons and some wool stuffing. (E) Also prepare a needle with 1 strand of thread, double threaded with a knot at the end. Mommy and me Copyright c 2015 Muumade www.muumade.com A Button Owl - Sewing Pattern - 2
Step 2: Mark the seam and the eyes (A) Put the pattern on the back of the solid-colored fabric. Make marks on the fabric at the bottom of the two vertical lines. (B) Cut the paper pattern along the inner dotted line and the two vertical solid lines at the bottom. (C) Use a sewing pin to poke small holes through the center of the eyes. Then use a tooth pick to make the holes slightly bigger. (D) Pin the pattern on the back of the solid-colored fabric, aligning its bottom corners with the marks on the fabric. (E) Trace around the dotted line of the pattern, and press the tip of the pencil through the eye holes. Step 3: Sew on the eyes: (A) Insert the needle through an eye mark from the back of the solid-colored fabric. Put a button on the needle through one of its holes. (B) Pass the needle through the other button hole and insert it into the fabric a bit to the right of where it came out of the fabric. (C) Repeat Steps (A) and (B) two more times. Push the needle up from the back of the fabric and pull it out from between the fabric and the button. (D) Wrap the thread around the stitches under the button three times, while pulling it tight. (E) Insert the needle near the wrapped thread and pull it out from the back of the fabric. Jumping rope with Mint and Sky. Copyright c 2015 Muumade www.muumade.com A Button Owl - Sewing Pattern - 4
(F) Make a finishing knot on the back of the fabric: First, push the needle through the closest stitch to where the needle came out. (G) Start to pull the thread through that stitch, but stop when you have a small loop of thread. (H) Put the needle through that loop, and pull the thread all the way to make a nice tight knot. Make another knot in the same spot, and then cut the thread. (I) Repeat with the other eye. Now you have sewn on two buttons, and made a pair of cute owl eyes! A picnic in the country! Step 4: Sew the body (A) Place the 2 pieces of the fabric together, with their back sides out, and pin them together with sewing pins. (B) Insert the threaded needle into one of the bottom ends of the line, and make a couple of tiny stitches in that spot. (C) Now, using the Running Stitch, sew along the line all the way around the body. As you sew, make sure to keep the two layers of fabric nicely aligned. (D) Stop sewing at the other bottom end. Make a couple of tiny stitches again, and end with a finishing knot. A visit with Miss Bea Copyright c 2015 Muumade www.muumade.com A Button Owl - Sewing Pattern - 6
Step 5: Make the bottom flat (A) Separate the two layers of fabric at their bottom edges. Fold the fabric so that the bottom seam lies on top of the side seam. (B) Pin the fold. With a ruler, draw a straight line from the corner A to B. (C) Sew through all of the layers of fabric along the line, using the Running Stitch. (D) Repeat with the other side of the body, and you will have the two side edges sewn. The Tardy Tortoise won the race. Egg hunt with Mr. Easter Bunny! Step 6: Debut of the Owl! (A) Trim around the tip of the body. Be careful not to cut any stitches! (This is to make a nice pointy tip when turned right-side out.) Step 7: The Owl s beak (B) Then, turn the body piece right-side out. Our annual photo with Santa (A) Fold the tip down as much as you like to make the beak. (B) Pin the beak in place and sew the tip onto the body with a few small stitches. (C) I recommend pinning the bottom edges to give easier access to where you are sewing. Step 8: Stuffing (A) Stuff the owl with wool stuffing! Make it as firm or fluffy as you like. Step 9: Almost there! I love snorkeling! (A) Make sure the seams of the opening are nicely folded inward. Pin the opening closed. (B) Using the Ladder Stitch, sew the owl closed. Make a finishing knot and cut the thread. Copyright c 2015 Muumade www.muumade.com A Button Owl - Sewing Pattern - 9
